The paper presents the results of geophysical research conducted in the region where the so called Gold Train' was believed to be located. The surveyed site was located in Wabrzych, at the 65th kilometre of the railway connecting Wrocaw and Wabrzych. The aim of the research was to verify the legend of the existence of the so called Gold Train' that was supposed to be located in the tunnel. The Gold Train' was believed to contain Wrocaw's treasures. Three geophysical methods were used. Microgravimetric and GPR (ground-penetrating radar) methods were applied to locate the void (tunnel), while the search for the train (a metal object) was conducted with the use of a magnetic method. Detailed geodetic measurements were used, including, among others, laser scanning. Due to complex terrain and geological structure, the negative results of the microgravimetric research was conclusive only in respect of one of the profiles. Due to high attenuation of electromagnetic wave by a shallow geological structure the scope of the GPR method was limited, however it was sufficient to confirm that such a tunnel does not exist. Despite difficulties related to electric lines in the researched area, conclusive results were obtained using the magnetic method. No magnetic anomaly with a shape or amplitude indicative of a steel train was identified.

Microgravity Survey to Detect Voids and Loosening Zones in the Vicinity of the Mine Shaft

Slawomir Porzucek, Monika Loj

Summary: The study focused on the surface microgravity surveys conducted around mine shafts, highlighting the potential risks to both the shafts and surface infrastructure due to changes in mass distribution. The results allowed for the identification of voids and loosening zones, along with the recognition of density distribution characteristics in different types of mine shafts. Additionally, the surveys provided valuable information on density changes outside shaft linings, particularly at depths where decreasing density zones were detected and require further monitoring.

Variations in host surfaces morphology and biology of ciliate epibionts explaining distribution pattern of epibionts in the invasive signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852)

A. Dobrzycka-Krahel, L. Rolbiecki, J. Karczewski, M. E. Skora

Summary: This study reports the distribution of epibiotic ciliates on signal crayfish for the first time and reveals that the presence of epibionts is determined by the morphology of the crayfish's exoskeleton. Smooth and regularly setae-covered surfaces show no epibionts, while dimpled surfaces with regular micro-papillae exhibit a new self-cleaning design.

Nanostructure of the laser-modified transition metal nanocomposites for water splitting

Jakub Wawrzyniak, Jakub Karczewski, Emerson Coy, Jacek Ryl, Katarzyna Grochowska, Katarzyna Siuzdak

Summary: Although hydrogen is considered the green fuel of the future, its current production method is not environmentally friendly. Therefore, the development of efficient electrodes for hydrogen and oxygen production is crucial. This study employed laser-based modification technique to treat nanotubes containing transition metal species, and found that the laser treatment had opposite effects on hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Structural and chemical analysis provided insights for more efficient, low-temperature water splitting.

Summary: In this study, a novel WO3/S-doped g-C3N4 nanocomposite was developed for efficient removal of NOx in the air through photocatalytic reactions. The photocatalytic tests were conducted in a continuous-flow photoreactor, which demonstrated that the composite exhibited high efficiency in converting NO2 and had good stability.

Surface Microgravity Monitoring of Underground Water Migration: A Case Study in Wieliczka, Poland

Slawomir Porzucek, Monika Loj, Kajetan D'Obyrn

Summary: Excessive water inflow poses a significant risk to mine operations, particularly in salt mines. This paper discusses the gravity and microgravity surveys conducted in the Wieliczka Salt Mine to investigate the causes of water outflow and the condition of the rock mass. The surveys provide valuable information on the geological structure of the area and help identify potential water migration routes.

Susceptibility to Degradation in Soil of Branched Polyesterurethane Blends with Polylactide and Starch

Joanna Brzeska, Grzegorz Jasik, Wanda Sikorska, Barbara Mendrek, Jakub Karczewski, Marek Kowalczuk, Maria Rutkowska

Summary: This paper presents the results of testing the susceptibility to degradation in soil of branched polyesterurethane (PUR) based on poly([R,S]-3-hydroxybutyrate) (R,S-PHB), modified with poly([D,L]-lactide) (PLA) and starch (St). The study found that these materials underwent enzymatic degradation caused by microorganisms in the soil, resulting in changes in surface morphology while having minimal changes in molecular weight, chemical structure, and thermal properties.

Melange, Flysch and Cliffs in the Pieniny Klippen Belt (Poland): An Overview

Jan Golonka, Anna Waskowska, Kamil Cichostepski, Jerzy Dec, Kaja Pietsch, Monika Loj, Grzegorz Bania, Wlodzimierz Jerzy Moscicki, Slawomir Porzucek

Summary: The Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) is a fold belt between the Central and Outer Carpathians, formed by prolonged folding, thrusting, and uplifting processes. It exhibits a melange structure with different tectonic units difficult to distinguish. Cliffs, known as Klippen, within the PKB are harder elements compared to the surrounding clastic deposits, and they often represent olistoliths that slid from elevated areas to the basins. The flower structure of PKB was formed during lithospheric plate collision and strike-slip movement.

Environmentally Friendly Fabrication of High-Efficient Fe-ZnO/Citric Acid-Modified Cellulose Composite and the Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity in the Presence of H2O2

Agnieszka Fiszka Borzyszkowska, Agnieszka Sulowska, Ivar Zekker, Jakub Karczewski, Kai Bester, Anna Zielinska-Jurek

Summary: In this study, a novel Fe-ZnO/citric acid-modified cellulose composite was synthesized and characterized, and the photocatalytic degradation of IBU by different Fe and CAC content photocatalysts was investigated. The 0.5%Fe-ZnO-40%CAC catalyst exhibited high photocatalytic activity, and the addition of H2O2 significantly enhanced the degradation rate of IBU.

Recognition of the flysch substrate using the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method to assess the effectiveness of the injection process

Michal Cwiklik, Bernadetta Pasierb, Slawomir Porzucek

Summary: During the construction of the S-7 Lubien - Rabka-Zdroj dual expressway in South Poland, damage to the embankment and pavement was observed due to complex tectonic and geological conditions, including a shallow groundwater table and landslides. In order to stabilize the road, injections were carried out using the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method to identify the geological structure and evaluate the effectiveness of the injection process. ERT effectively delineated the fractures in the flysch and determined the penetration depth of the injection mixture and the degree of filling in the loosening zone.
