Summary: This meta-analysis compared the safety and efficacy of robotic and laparoscopic surgery in mid-low rectal cancer. The results showed that compared to laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery had superior outcomes in terms of estimated blood loss, number of lymph nodes dissected, time to first flatus, time to first fluid diet, hospital stay, conversion, and urinary retention, although it required more operation time.

Summary: Robotic-assisted surgery has several advantages over laparoscopic surgery in patients undergoing curative surgery for rectal cancer, including shorter operative time, significantly lower conversion to open surgery, shorter duration of hospital stay, lower risk of urinary retention, and improved survival to hospital discharge or 30-day overall survival rate.

Summary: Threatened or involved mesorectal fascia and T3 tumors with greater than 5 mm extension were identified as preoperative predictors of pathological CRM involvement, according to a retrospective study on robotic rectal cancer surgery outcomes. The predictive model based on preoperative radiological features showed good discrimination and could estimate the risk of CRM positivity for each patient.

Summary: This systematic review compared urogenital functions after laparoscopic (LAP) and robotic (ROB) surgery for rectal cancer, finding that the risk of 30-day urinary retention was lower in the ROB group. Additionally, the International Prostate Symptom Score at 3 months and the International Index of Erectile Function score at 6 months were better in the ROB group. However, the quality of evidence for the improvement in urogenital function after rectal surgery with robotics was deemed low.

Summary: The study showed that robotic rectal cancer surgery had better short-term outcomes compared to laparoscopic surgery, with lower overall complications rate and shorter length of stay. Robotic surgery was found to be the most protective factor for reducing complications and was the only independent protective factor for prolonged length of stay.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the feasibility and safety of robotic surgery for elderly patients (>70 years old) undergoing curative treatment for rectal cancer. The study found that elderly patients can undergo robotic resection with similar surgical quality and outcomes as young patients, without increasing postoperative mortality and morbidity. Therefore, robotic surgery is a viable option for elderly patients with rectal cancer.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the impact of antibiotic prophylaxis on postoperative surgical site infection (SSI) rates in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. The meta-analysis of multiple studies found no significant difference in SSI rates between the group receiving antibiotic prophylaxis and the group without preoperative antibiotics. Low-quality evidence supports the similar SSI rates produced by antibiotic prophylaxis in these surgeries compared to the absence of perioperative antibiotics.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative and intraoperative factors on the technical difficulty of total thyroidectomy (TT) and the incidence of postoperative complications. The study found that factors such as male sex, obesity, and thyroid adhesions were associated with prolonged operating time, while above-normal levels of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies were correlated with transient symptomatic hypocalcemia.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the early post-operative outcomes and patient's satisfaction between one-stage and two-stage breast reconstruction techniques after skin-sparing and/or nipple-sparing mastectomy for breast cancer or BRCA1/2 mutation. The results showed that one-stage reconstruction had better aesthetic outcomes and higher patient satisfaction, although it required longer operative time. There were no significant differences in post-operative complications between the two groups.

Summary: We investigated the genetic and epigenetic features of a case of multiple synchronous mesenteric desmoids occurring after necrotizing pancreatitis. We found the T41A CTNNB1 mutation in all four desmoid tumors, and miR-21-3p and miR-197-3p were respectively upregulated and down-regulated in the mutated sporadic mesenteric desmoids. The study reveals potential activation of inflammation pathways within the desmoid tumor.
