Summary: The study found a significantly lower rate of diagnosed glaucoma or its suspicion in patients with exudative AMD compared to non-exudative AMD. There was a significant difference in the rates of suspected glaucoma between the two groups. The retrospective application of clinical criteria may help identify potential underdiagnosis of glaucoma in AMD patients.

Summary: This study tracked the progression of eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) involving the central 1 mm diameter zone and found that the central residual effective radius (CRER) declined linearly over approximately 13 years. This finding suggests that CRER could serve as an anatomical endpoint in future clinical trials aiming to preserve the central zone.

Summary: The study describes a new clinical phenotype of exudative non-neovascular AMD characterized by intraretinal exudation causing macular edema. It emphasizes the importance of multimodal imaging in differentiating this condition from other manifestations of AMD. Further research is needed to assess the clinical impact and optimal management of exudative non-neovascular AMD.

Summary: This article provides an overview of current macular imaging techniques and describes the biomarkers that may be useful in the routine management of macular diseases, particularly exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The authors discuss the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) in macular imaging, classification of exudative AMD, and biomarkers in structural OCT and OCTA. The integration of technologically-advanced imaging equipment with AI software is expected to enhance patient care in the future.

Summary: There is uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of PBM treatment in slowing the progression of non-exudative macular degeneration. Well-designed controlled trials with appropriate dosimetry, powered for effectiveness and safety outcomes are needed. Adoption of agreed clinical outcome measures and patient-based outcome measures for AMD should be considered.

Summary: The X-82 oral therapy combined with pro re nata anti-VEGF injections showed non-inferiority in visual acuity outcomes compared with placebo, and there was a dose-dependent decrease in the number of anti-VEGF injections over the 52-week period. However, due to limited tolerability and safety issues observed, X-82 does not have a sufficient benefit to risk profile in the treatment of AMD patients.

Summary: This nationwide cohort study aimed to investigate the risk factors for exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in individuals with diabetes. The study analyzed authorized clinical data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, involving over 1.7 million participants. Data on various factors including duration of diabetes, insulin usage, and presence of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were collected, and the association with incident exudative AMD was assessed using a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard model.

Summary: The study found that using nucleic acid screening solely for increased infectious-risk organs was the dominant strategy. The false-positive rate of nucleic acid testing was identified as a key driver of cost-effectiveness. Further research on the false-positivity rate should be conducted before expanding nucleic acid screening to non-increased infectious-risk organs to ensure it does not negatively impact transplantation numbers, quality-adjusted life-years, and costs.

Summary: The global burden of myopia is on the rise, with increasing prevalence of myopia and high myopia expected to lead to higher costs in terms of vision loss and complications. Current global cost estimates related to direct health expenditure and lost productivity are in the billions, with higher health expenditure in adults. Further research is needed to understand the lifelong impact of myopia on individuals and the cost-effectiveness of novel approaches in reducing the burden.

Summary: Retinal drusen are uncommon in IgA nephropathy, but they resemble drusen found in age-related macular degeneration. The IgA-staining deposits in the drusen are likely related to systemic deposition of IgA. The nature of cystic spaces in the drusen is still unknown. Summary: The study investigated the phenotype, variability, and penetrance of IMPG2-related maculopathy. The results showed that mono-allelic IMPG2 variants could result in haploinsufficiency manifesting as a maculopathy with variable penetrance and expressivity. Family members of patients with IMPG2-related retinitis pigmentosa may also present with vitelliform lesions. The maculopathy is usually limited to the fovea and is associated with moderate visual impairment.
