Monodominant forests are characterized by the strong influence of a single species on the structure and diversity of the community. In the tropics, monodominant forests are rare exceptions within the generally highly diverse tropical forest biome. Some studies have shown that tree monodominance may be a transient state caused by successional and demographic variation among species over time. Working in a Brosimum rubescens Taub. (Moraceae) monodominant forest at the southern edge of Amazonia, we tested the hypotheses that local-scale variation in intra- and interspecific spatial patterns of dominant tree species is affected by i) demographic rates of recruitment and mortality following severe droughts, ii) local variation in edaphic properties, and iii) occupation of species in the vertical layer of the forest. We quantified intra- and interspecific spatial patterns and edaphic associations of the five most abundant species using aggregation and association distance indices, and examined changes over time. We found some support for all hypotheses. Thus, intra- and interspecific spatial patterns of most species varied over time, principally after severe drought, emphasizing species-level variability and their interactions in sensitivity to this disturbance, even as B. rubescens monodominance was maintained. While positive and negative spatial associations with edaphic properties provide evidence of habitat specialization, the absence of negative spatial associations of B. rubescens with edaphic properties indicates that this species experiences little environmental restriction, and this may be one of the factors that explain its mono dominance. Spatial repulsion and attraction between species in the same and in different vertical layers, respectively, indicates niche overlap and differentiation, while changes over time indicate that the relationships between species are dynamic and affected by drought disturbance.

Summary: This study investigated the geographic patterns and ecological correlates of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia, including endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory, and hydrochory. The results showed that anemochory was positively associated with mean annual wind speed, while hydrochory was higher in flooded forests. The availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits did not explain the distribution of dispersal modes. Further research is needed to understand the association between frugivores and the proportional abundance of zoochory.

Implications of tropical cyclones on damage and potential recovery and restoration of logged forests in Vietnam

Summary: Many natural forests in Southeast Asia have been degraded due to decades of logging. The restoration of these forests is delayed by ongoing logging and tropical cyclones, but the impact on recovery is uncertain. A study in central Vietnam found that plantations are more susceptible to cyclone damage compared to natural forests. The research suggests reducing unlicensed logging and preventing the conversion of degraded natural forests into plantations is essential for the restoration of forest landscapes in Southeast Asia, especially in cyclone-prone areas.

Summary: This study aimed to model and map the spatial distribution of forest biomass in Caatinga, Brazil, using regression kriging and Inverse Square of Distance techniques. The results showed that environmental variables explained 46% of the biomass variations, and regression kriging provided a more detailed spatial distribution. The study suggests further research with increased sampling intensity and the use of other explanatory variables to improve the model.

Summary: In a rapidly changing global environment, understanding the factors that determine species abundance distribution is crucial for studying ecosystem dynamics. The constrained maximization of information entropy framework allows for quantitative analysis of these complex dynamics by examining important constraints using unbiased probability distributions. By applying this framework to Amazonian tree inventories across various forest types and functional traits, the study demonstrates that regional relative abundances of genera have a greater influence on local relative abundances than directional selection for specific functional traits. These results provide valuable insights into ecological dynamics using large-scale data and interdisciplinary methods.

Summary: Drought and fire reduce productivity and increase tree mortality in tropical forests. Fires produce pyrogenic carbon (PyC), which improves soil fertility and water holding capacity and selects for tree species capable of growing during droughts. This study found that forests with higher concentrations of soil PyC had higher soil fertility, lower wood density, and were more resistant to severe drought. Forests with a legacy of ancient fires had higher carbon gains during droughts compared to forests with low soil PyC concentrations. This suggests that past fires have a lasting impact on current forest dynamics and resilience to drought.

Summary: Evolutionary radiations of woody taxa within arid environments have been facilitated by the development of deep roots and embolism-resistant xylem, but the coevolution of these traits across woody plant phylogeny and their joint effects on species distribution remain poorly understood. By analyzing global trait and vegetation plot datasets, we found that rooting depth and xylem vulnerability interact with aridity, precipitation seasonality, and water table depth to influence species occurrence probabilities across all biomes. Each combination of trait values maximizes occurrence probabilities under specific environmental conditions.

Summary: This study found that forests in drier South American climates are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures and drought, as they experienced the greatest impacts of the 2015-2016 El Nino event. However, overall, intact tropical South American forests remain a key defense against climate change, as they are no more sensitive to extreme events than to previous less intense ones. This study is important for understanding the long-term climate resistance of South American forests.

Summary: Dominant tree species in neotropical tree communities show a variety of distributional patterns still poorly understood. Contrary to the widely supported positive abundance-occupancy relationship, we found a strong negative relationship between local abundance and regional frequency and/or spatial aggregation among dominant Amazonian tree species. Our findings suggest an ecological trade-off whereby dominant species can be either locally abundant or regionally widespread, but rarely both.

Summary: Understanding the factors influencing global leaf type variation in trees is important for understanding their role in terrestrial ecosystems. Through a global assessment, integrating forest inventory data with leaf form and habit records, we found that leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Our results estimate the global proportions of different tree types and their corresponding biomass, and highlight the impact of climate change on future forest types.

Summary: Lianas, as important components of tropical forests, compete with host trees for resources, leading to decreased tree growth and increased tree mortality. However, their impact on the carbon dynamics of host trees is not significant. Lianas have higher non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) concentrations compared to trees.
