Peripheral Vascular Disease

Summary: Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, plays a crucial role in growth and development. However, in pathological conditions, this process becomes dysregulated, presenting new challenges and opportunities for vascular-directed therapies. This review provides insights into blood vessel development and discusses novel therapeutic strategies to stabilize, reverse or halt disease progression by promoting or inhibiting angiogenesis. The review also explores additional aspects that operate alongside canonical angiogenesis mechanisms and speculates on targeting these processes with anti-angiogenic or vascular-directed therapies.

Summary: Extrachromosomal (ec) DNAs are genetic elements that exist separately from the genome and can provide a powerful adaptive mechanism in cancers and pathogens. The discovery of ecDNA contributing to antimalarial resistance in Plasmodium falciparum opens up potential new strategies for targeting resistance development. The study reveals that ecDNA may originate from the chromosome and has a complex structure, which may improve its segregation or expression.

Summary: The CALPHAD method is widely used for material design and development, with multiple software packages available for computing thermodynamic equilibrium. While the PGE approach was initially advanced for its numerical advantages, it faced convergence issues when applied to highly non-ideal solution phases and was eventually abandoned in Thermochimica.

Summary: The study showed that there is a policy-practice gap in the surveillance and treatment of Barrett's esophagus, leading to increased costs but only a minimal increase in the prevention of esophageal adenocarcinoma and gain in QALYs. Incentives should be developed to bridge this gap and reduce the burden on patients and healthcare resources.
