Summary: The high modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) is independently associated with poor overall survival and disease-free survival in patients undergoing curative surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), especially for those with TNM stage I PDAC and tumors located at the pancreatic head or uncinate process. Preoperative mGPS is a significant prognostic factor for PDAC after curative resection.

Summary: In patients with BRAF(V600)-mutated melanoma, the number of distinct tumor sites at the initiation of targeted therapy is associated with survival, while serum lactate dehydrogenase values and the absolute lymphocyte count to absolute neutrophil count ratio are strong predictors of prognosis. Using both of these markers can help stratify prognosis for patients with metastatic melanoma receiving targeted therapy.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the pretreatment hemogram parameters and their ratios can predict the endometrial transformation in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding. The study found that age, postmenopausal state, obesity, diabetes, and increased estrogen exposure were risk factors for endometrial atypia and carcinoma. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were significantly higher in early and advanced endometrial cancer groups, while platelet value was significantly higher in atypia and carcinoma groups.

Summary: In this study, it was found that bladder cancer patients with IMPROVE score greater than 4 had higher NLR, LMR, and lymphocyte values. The IMPROVE score was significantly influenced by lymphocyte count and NLR value. Patients with NMIBC with low lymphocytes and NLR > 3 were at a higher risk of developing venous thromboembolic events.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive capability of baseline and early variations of different blood cells and their ratios in metastatic melanoma patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The study found that higher baseline neutrophils and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were negatively correlated with clinical outcomes. Early variations of blood cells also predicted treatment efficacy. These findings propose simple and inexpensive biomarkers for better patient selection.

Summary: In RCC patients undergoing laparoscopic partial or radical nephrectomy, NLR and PLR were identified as biomarkers of systemic inflammation associated with increased risk of sarcopenia. The best cutoff points for predicting sarcopenia risk were NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63, with higher levels indicating a greater risk. Adjusting for various variables, patients with NLR >2.88 and PLR >135.63 had significantly higher risks of developing sarcopenia compared to those with lower NLR or PLR levels.

Summary: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is an independent prognostic factor for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma receiving molecular-targeted agents as primary treatment, affecting survival significantly. Decreases in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio after one month of treatment are associated with longer survival among these patients.

Summary: This study examines the role of alterations in the immune-inflammation system in affective disorders, specifically major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are investigated as inflammation markers. The findings reveal elevated NLR and MLR in first-episode and recurrent MDD patients, as well as higher NLR and MLR and lower PLR in BD patients. Moreover, BD manic episode patients have significantly higher NLR and MLR compared to BD depressive episode patients or MDD patients. Overall, this study highlights the importance of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD, particularly during manic BD episodes.

Summary: This study investigated the association between preoperative inflammatory markers and postoperative delirium (POD) in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion surgery (LSFS). The analysis of 11 years' worth of data showed that increased levels of inflammatory markers, particularly the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), were associated with the development of POD. These findings suggest that a proinflammatory state may be a potential pathological mechanism of POD.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the factors associated with not receiving the primary series and booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine among Venezuelan migrants in Peru. It found that being younger, uninsured, illegally-staying, and having a low educational level were associated with not receiving the vaccine. Governmental policies prioritizing vaccination among Venezuelan migrants are needed to ensure broad coverage in this vulnerable group.

Summary: We evaluated the levels of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) as a protective factor against vaccine breakthrough infection (VBI) in healthcare workers (HCWs) during Peru's third COVID-19 wave. This retrospective cohort study used data from a private laboratory in Lima, Peru, and included HCWs who received either two doses of BBIBP-CorV vaccine or a heterologous booster with BNT162b2. We found that HCWs with higher levels of NAbs, measured at various time points after BBIBP-CorV vaccination, had a lower risk of VBI during the third wave of COVID-19.

Summary: The systemic immune-inflammation index (SIII) has been studied as a marker for various urologic cancers, including testicular cancer. This systematic review analyzed observational studies from five databases and found that high SIII values were associated with worse overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in testicular cancer patients. A sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the risk of bias in the studies. However, further primary studies are recommended to strengthen the evidence of SIII as a prognostic marker in testicular cancer.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the efficacy of tunnel technique (TUN) vs. coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the management of multiple gingival recession defects in adults. The results showed that there were no significant differences between TUN and CAF in terms of primary and secondary outcomes. Summary: Cardiac transplantation is a critical treatment for advanced heart failure patients, but limited by organ availability. Xenotransplantation, the transplantation of non-human donor organs, has the potential to overcome these limitations, but previous attempts have been unsuccessful. Recent progress in genetically modified pig models and the use of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing techniques have renewed hope for the success of xenotransplantation.

Summary: This review aimed to estimate the prevalence of computer vision syndrome (CVS) in the general population and subgroups. A meta-analysis of 103 cross-sectional studies with 66 577 participants showed that the prevalence of CVS was 69.0%. Higher prevalence was found in women, university students, Africa and Asia, contact lens wearers, studies conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic, and those that did not use the CVS-Q questionnaire. Standardizing a definition of CVS and implementing preventive strategies and interventions are important for decreasing the prevalence of this condition.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the GRACE risk score in acute pulmonary embolism (PE) patients for 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The study found that the GRACE risk score, along with the PESI score, were independent risk factors associated with 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The GRACE risk score showed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting mortality, and its combination with the PESI score helped define high-risk PE patients and predict poor prognosis.
