Summary: This study finds that lumbar pain is the most prevalent and primarily affects women. The increase in lumbar curvature is associated with higher BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Additionally, all adiposity variables, as well as abdominal obesity, increase cervical and dorsal curvatures.

Summary: The study assessed the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the Italian version of the STarT Back Screening Tool, finding that the original two-correlated factors model had adequate fit according to confirmatory factor analysis. The SBST demonstrated good test-retest reliability and construct validity.

Summary: Tension-type headache and non-specific low back pain share similar clinical features, including tender points and areas, abnormal activation patterns observed in electromyography, and discoordinated motor control of affected muscles and adjacent muscle groups. These common features suggest a potential analogous pathophysiology involving the neuromotor control in the cervical and lumbar regions.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in managing low back pain. The analysis of 13 randomized clinical trials and 27 nonrandomized trials or case series showed that PRP was generally effective and safe for degenerative low back pain. Positive results were found in almost all studies, although there were some biases in the research. Large-scale, multicenter randomized clinical trials are still needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Identifying genetic risk factors for lumbar spine disorders through genome-wide association studies using electronic health record data may lead to the development of new treatments. The study identified two novel associations with lumbar spine disorders, including lumbosacral radicular syndrome and lumbar spinal stenosis. Replication in an independent sample confirmed the association with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Summary: Limited studies have examined the effects of exercise therapy on obese and normal-weight patients. This study investigated the impact of a 12-week rehabilitation exercise program on cardiovascular risk factors, ODI, and lumbar muscle CSA in low back pain patients, finding significant improvements in body composition, body weight, BMI, body fat percentage, total cholesterol, and LDL in the overweight group. ODI score and lumbar muscle CSA also showed significant improvements post-intervention, indicating the need for intensive exercise interventions for overweight low back pain patients.

Summary: Obesity is associated with cervicalgia and low back pain (LBP), and this study used Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal relationship. Educational level was negatively associated with cervicalgia and LBP, while heavy physical work, major depression, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference were positively associated. Leisure sedentary behavior, smoking, and alcohol intake frequency were only positively associated with LBP. Factors such as education level, heavy physical work, and mood stability were identified as potential mediators.

Summary: This study suggests that patients with different chronic pain conditions exhibit neuroinflammation, which is accompanied by neurophysiological changes and correlates with clinical presentation. These findings contribute to the subtyping of distinct pain syndromes and provide potential targets for precision medicine.

Summary: The clinical expression of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is influenced by background genetic variation and environmental factors. A study of 11 pairs of monozygotic HCM twins showed discordant cardiac morphology even among twins with the same pathogenic variant, indicating a significant role for epigenetics and environment in HCM disease progression. Whole genome sequencing analysis did not reveal notable somatic genetic variants to explain the clinical differences in the twins.

Summary: This study tested the causality between education and smoking using discordant twin pairs. The results support the hypothesis that education has a causal effect on current smoking status and smoking cessation. Furthermore, genetic factors also contribute to these associations, as seen in the greater differences within dizygotic twin pairs who share only 50% of their segregating genes.

Summary: The genetic and environmental underpinnings of sleep quality have been extensively studied, but there is limited knowledge about the etiology and associations of different sleep quality dimensions. This study aimed to investigate the structure of sleep quality dimensions using a population-based twin sample. The findings suggest significant genetic overlap among most components of sleep quality, but there is also considerable specificity in the genetic-environmental structure of these dimensions.

Summary: There is a moderate genetic association between poor sleep quality and psychological distress, accounting for 44% of the association between these two variables. Significant genetic and non-shared environmental correlations were found, indicating a moderate overlap between genetic and environmental factors influencing both phenotypes. Sex did not significantly influence the genetic and environmental influences on these variables.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of a digital CBT-i program in people with comorbid symptoms of insomnia and low back pain, in both twins and individuals from the general community. The results showed that online CBT-i was well-received by participants with positive feedback. However, improvement strategies are needed to enhance adherence, follow-up, control group credibility, and twin recruitment rates for future trials.
