Immunomodulation Potential of Probiotics: A Novel Strategy for Improving Livestock Health, Immunity, and Productivity

A. K. M. Humayun Kober, Muhammad Shahid Riaz Rajoka, Hafiza Mahreen Mehwish, Julio Villena, Haruki Kitazawa

Summary: In the past decade, the use of probiotics as feed supplements in animal production has significantly increased due to the ban on antibiotic growth promoters. Probiotics have been suggested to improve the health, immunity, growth performance, nutritional digestibility, and intestinal microbial balance of livestock. Furthermore, they can help balance the beneficial microbial population and turnover in animals by stimulating the host immune response and excluding potentially pathogenic bacteria.

Leonardo Albarracin, Ramiro Ortiz Moyano, Juan Martin Vargas, Bruno G. N. Andrade, Juan Cortez Zamar, Stefania Dentice Maidana, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Shoichiro Kurata, Maria Angela Jure, Haruki Kitazawa, Julio Villena

Summary: In this study, the virulence and immune response of two hypermucoviscous carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains were evaluated. The results showed that LABACER01 had higher pathogenicity and caused more severe lung tissue damage compared to LABACER27. Genomic analysis revealed the presence of virulence-related genes and adhesion genes in both strains.

Respiratory Commensal Bacteria Increase Protection against Hypermucoviscous Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST25 Infection

Stefania Dentice Maidana, Ramiro Ortiz Moyano, Juan Martin Vargas, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Shoichiro Kurata, Vyacheslav Melnikov, Maria Angela Jure, Haruki Kitazawa, Julio Villena

Summary: In this study, we evaluated the immunomodulatory effect of Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum 090104 strain against the respiratory infection induced by hypermucoviscous carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. The results showed that pre-treatment with 090104 strain significantly reduced lung bacterial cell counts and tissue damage, and regulated the respiratory innate immune response. This study advances the positioning of 090104 strain as a next-generation probiotic for the respiratory tract and suggests its potential as a non-antibiotic therapeutical approach.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LOC1 Isolated from Fresh Tea Leaves Modulates Macrophage Response to TLR4 Activation

Masahiko Suzuki, Leonardo Albarracin, Yuji Tsujikawa, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Iwao Sakane, Julio Villena, Haruki Kitazawa

Summary: This study characterized the potential probiotic properties of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LOC1, including its immunomodulatory effects on innate immunity. The study demonstrated that LOC1 strain can modulate inflammatory response in macrophages and enhance their protective effects mediated by the stimulation of the Th1 response. Comparative genomics analysis revealed that LOC1 possesses genes related to adhesion and immunomodulation. These findings contribute to the development of immune-related functional foods containing LOC1.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Strains Modulate Intestinal Innate Immune Response and Increase Resistance to Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Infection

Ayelen Baillo, Julio Villena, Leonardo Albarracin, Mikado Tomokiyo, Mariano Elean, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Sandra Quilodran-Vega, Silvina Fadda, Haruki Kitazawa

Summary: The immunobiotic potential of L. plantarum CRL681 and CRL1506 was studied in this research. The results showed that both strains could induce the expression of IL-6 and IL-8 in intestinal epithelial cells and enhance the levels of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha in mice. In addition, these strains could modulate the expression of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, reduce the pathogen counts, and prevent its spread to other organs. L. plantarum CRL1506 was found to be more efficient in modulating mucosal immunity than CRL681.

Immunomodulatory Effects of Probiotics: A Novel Preventive Approach for the Control of Bovine Mastitis

A. K. M. Humayun Kober, Sudeb Saha, Md. Aminul Islam, Muhammad Shahid Riaz Rajoka, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Hisashi Aso, Julio Villena, Haruki Kitazawa

Summary: This review article provides an overview of recent advances in the use of probiotics for the prevention and treatment of bovine mastitis. Research has shown that probiotics can suppress mammary pathogens through competitive exclusion or the production of antimicrobial compounds. Additionally, evidence suggests that probiotics can modulate the immune response of mammary glands to inflammation. These findings indicate that probiotics can be used as a preventive strategy for managing mastitis and antimicrobial resistance, while also improving milk production and animal and human health.

The Respiratory Commensal Bacterium Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum as a Mucosal Adjuvant for Nasal Vaccines

Ramiro Ortiz Moyano, Fernanda Raya Tonetti, Kohtaro Fukuyama, Mariano Elean, Mikado Tomokiyo, Yoshihito Suda, Vyacheslav Melnikov, Haruki Kitazawa, Julio Villena

Summary: Cp and BLPs can stimulate alveolar macrophages and enhance the humoral immune response induced by the commercial pneumococcal vaccine. Mice immunized with Cp + PCV or BLPs + PCV showed higher levels of specific antibodies and lower levels of pneumococcal cell counts and lung damage compared to the control group. These findings demonstrate the potential of Cp and BLPs as adjuvants to enhance the immune response against respiratory pathogens.
