A comparison of cultural ecosystem service survey methods within South England

Across all societies, humans depend on goods received from nature, termed ecosystem services. However, cultural ecosystem services (CES), the non-material benefits people obtain from ecosystems, are often overlooked in land-use decision making due to their intangible nature. This study aimed to evaluate three possible survey methods for site-based CES data collection; language-based supervised surveys (in which interviewers conduct surveys in real-time, recording verbal responses), language-based unsupervised surveys (respondents complete written surveys without an interviewer), and image-based unsupervised surveys (respondents complete surveys via image selection without an interviewer). Language-based supervised surveys were found to be more efficient in collecting CES data than lan-guage-/image-based unsupervised surveys, with a mean completion rate over 1.5-fold greater than either unsupervised survey; furthermore, survey completion was over twice as fast, and less than a sixth of the monetary cost per respondent compared to unsupervised surveys. The site-based assessment developed in this study provides robust data, and is shown to provide rapid and useful feedback to land-use decision makers. We recommend that rapid, site-based assessment methods are utilised to collect the information required to support CES-related decision making. (c) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

To improve conservation efforts, it is crucial to use scientific evidence and identify research gaps. This study assessed the impacts of climate change on TMFs, finding a lack of long-term data and a focus on predictive modeling rather than experimental studies.

The potential impact of future climate change on the production of a major food and cash crop in tropical (sub)montane homegardens

Summary: Tropical agroforestry systems that support smallholder farmers' wellbeing through ecological interactions between tree, soil, and crop components could be vulnerable to changes in climate. This study examines how climate conditions affect these interactions and banana yield in a homegarden agroforest in Mt. Kilimanjaro using a space-for-time climate analogue approach. The findings suggest that climate change destabilizes soil nutrient cycles and directly influences banana yield, which can initially benefit from warmer climate but decline under water stress. Effective irrigation measures are necessary to maintain the long-term resilience of homegarden agroforestry under warmer and drier climate conditions.

Research capability gaps hinder understanding of the impact of climate change on ecosystem services in the Latin American Pacific coast

Summary: This study investigates the research capacity of countries along the Pacific coast, between Mexico and Chile, and finds that research effort and the number of scientific studies related to climate change strongly correlates with GDP. The research capacity in the Latin American Pacific coast is much lower compared to the neighboring Californian coast. More research and focus on the links between climate change and ecosystem services are needed in the region.

Improving governance outcomes for water quality: Insights from participatory social network analysis for chalk stream catchments in England

Summary: Globally important chalk streams in England are facing poor ecological health due to inadequate water quality. Understanding the governance systems surrounding water quality is crucial in addressing this issue. Through participatory social network analysis, the social networks of River Test and River Itchen in Hampshire, United Kingdom were mapped and analyzed to identify actors and their roles. The results revealed a well-connected network of actors from the state, private sector, and civil society, but decision-making remains centralized. Lack of trust in central state actors and private actors hinders collaboration and coordination. Devolving authority to local actors, building trust in the networks, and improving connections to important actors could enhance governance outcomes for water quality.
