Summary: This study analyzed the potential of magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for the detection and evolution of new multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. The results showed that MTI provides more information than DTI and can detect tissue changes 2 to 4 months prior to their appearance on MRI.

Summary: DTI and volumetric MRI revealed white matter and deep grey matter abnormalities in the limbic system of MS patients. The fornix, thalamus, and hippocampus displayed atrophy and/or abnormal diffusion metrics, with the fornix showing the most extensive changes, mainly in those with cognitive impairment. These findings suggest a strong correlation between microstructural abnormalities in the limbic system and cognitive deficits in MS.

Summary: Multimodal microstructural MRI has increased sensitivity and specificity in detecting changes in brain diseases and injuries. This article presents an in vivo longitudinal dataset, including a subset of ex vivo data, for studying microstructural changes in healthy mouse brains. The dataset includes various MRI methods and techniques for analyzing microstructural changes. The sharing of this dataset can contribute to the development of biophysical models and methods for studying temporal brain dynamics.

Summary: While multiple sclerosis can affect any part of the CNS, it does not do so evenly. Lesions tend to occur around the ventricles in white matter, and mainly in the outermost cortex in grey matter. Neuronal loss is greater in the outermost layers of cortical grey matter, with the most severe abnormalities near the ventricular surface. The cause of these gradients remains uncertain, but factors released from meningeal inflammation into the CSF may play a role.

Summary: The characteristics of optic nerve impairment in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) patients were assessed using fractional anisotropy (FA). The study found that FA values were significantly decreased in the optic nerves of NMOSD patients, especially in the posterior segment. FA values in the anterior and middle segments of the optic nerve were also decreased in MS patients. Significant differences in FA values were observed in the posterior segment between NMOSD and MS patients. The combination of FA and signal intensity ratio (SIR) showed good diagnostic performance in distinguishing between NMOSD and MS.
