Background: The incidence of acquired demyelinating syndromes (ADS) including multiple sclerosis (MS) has never been investigated in a Danish pediatric population. Objectives: We estimated the nationwide age- and sex-specific incidence of pediatric ADS including MS. Methods: Data were sourced from the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Registry, providing cases of pediatric MS for 1977-2015, and the National Patient Register, providing cases of ADS during 2008-2015. All medical records were reviewed to validate the register-based diagnoses. Results: We identified 364 cases of pediatric MS occurring during 1977-2015 (incidence rate=0.79 per 100,000 person-years). MS was exceptionally rare before puberty, but the incidence rose considerably from 9years in girls and 11years in boys. The female-to-male ratio was 2.5; the median age at onset was 16years (range=7-17years). The MS incidence rate was relatively stable through the study period. During 2008-2015, we identified 219 ADS cases. The incidence was 2.29 per 100,000 person-years with considerable differences in the age peaks for the separate ADS. Conclusion: The incidence rates of MS and other ADS in Denmark were higher than those reported for some other European countries. Referral bias and classification differences may account for this disparity, in particular the age-intervals and the definition of onset.

Summary: This study identifies different subgroups of patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) based on their longitudinal trajectories of disability. The findings suggest that SPMS patients progress at greatly different rates and the identification of distinct trajectories can guide better patient selection in future clinical trials. Additionally, the distinct trajectories may reflect heterogeneous pathological mechanisms of progression.

Factors related to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Denmark: A national study in the autumn of 2021

Siri Rosenkilde, Ola Ekholm, Sanne P. P. Moller, Maj Britt D. Nielsen, Lau C. C. Thygesen

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the main reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and factors associated with it. A nationwide survey revealed concerns about adverse effects and the belief in natural immunity as the main reasons for hesitancy. Factors associated with hesitancy included female sex, younger age, being divorced, a non-Danish country of origin, lower educational level, unemployment, previous COVID-19 infection, and a greater worry about oneself and others getting infected. Future vaccination programs should target these specific socio-demographic subgroups to reduce hesitancy and increase uptake.

Alcohol consumption and well-being among 25,000 Danish high school students

Anne Sofie Plum Christensen, Veronica Pisinger, Anne Friis Krarup, Peter Dalum, Lau Caspar Thygesen, Janne Schurmann Tolstrup

Summary: Excessive alcohol consumption among young people is a global public health concern due to its negative impact on short- and long-term well-being. This study investigated the association between weekly alcohol consumption and various measures of poor well-being among students aged 15-25 years in Denmark. The findings revealed a U-shaped relationship, where both non-drinkers and heavy drinkers had higher odds of poor well-being compared to moderate drinkers. Understanding these associations can contribute to reducing alcohol consumption and promoting well-being among young students.

Summary: This study investigates the association between education level and fear of recurrence (FCR) among breast cancer patients, and finds that patients with higher education levels have less FCR compared to those with lower education levels. Self-efficacy only mediates a small part of this association among patients within 5 years since diagnosis.

Summary: The national smoking ban in Denmark did not have a significant impact on the incidence of smoking-related diseases, and there were no differences observed among socioeconomic groups. Therefore, future tobacco control measures in Denmark should focus on targeting low socioeconomic groups to address the strong socioeconomic inequality in health.
