Background/Aims The study aimed to determine pre- and post-fundoplication esophagogastric junction (EGJ) pressure and esophageal peristalsis by high-resolution manometry (HRM) in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods Pre-operative and post-operative HRM data from 25 patients with GERD were analyzed using ManoView version 2.0.1. with updated software for Chicago classification and pressure topography. The study involved swallowing water boluses of 10 mL in the upright position. Results Significant increase of mean basal EGJ pressure and minimal basal EGJ pressure was found in post-operative as compared with preoperative patients (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). Integrated relaxation pressure (IRP) reached higher values in post-operative patients than in pre-operative patients (P < 0.001). Intra-bolus pressure (IBP) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) and contractile front velocity (CFV) was slower (P < 0.01) in post-operative patients than in pre-operative patients. Moreover significant increase of distal contractile integral (DCI) was found in post-operative patients (P < 0.05). Hiatal hernia was detected by HRM in 11 pre-operative patients. Fifteen out of 25 post-operative patients complained of dysphagia. Conclusions Fundoplication restores the antireflux barrier by reinforcing EGJ basal pressures, repairing hiatal hernias, and enhances peristaltic function of the esophagus by increasing DCI. However slight IRP elevation found in post-fundoplication patients may result in bolus pressurization and motility disorders.

Impact of IPL treatments on parameters of acne skin

Julita Zdrada, Anna Stolecka-Warzecha, Wiktoria Odrzywolek, Anna Deda, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska, Slawomir Wilczynski

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of IPL for the treatment of acne and measured parameters such as sebum secretion, skin hydration, and melanin and hemoglobin content. The results showed a decrease in sebum secretion after light treatments, while hydration level and melanin and hemoglobin content remained the same. The volunteers reported a high level of satisfaction with the treatment effects. The study highlights the importance of proper care in the success of acne therapies.

Application of a three-dimensional scanner to the quantitative assessment of the nail plate condition after a hybrid manicure procedure-Preliminary study

Julita Zdrada, Wiktoria Odrzywolek, Anna Deda, Monika Machoy, Robert Koprowski, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska, Katarzyna Plesinska, Slawomir Wilczynski

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the impact of manicure procedures on the condition of the nail plate. The results showed that the nail plate structure changed to a similar extent after the manicure procedure. Changes in nail height suggested damage caused by substances and procedures. The use of a 3D scanner allowed for precise measurement of changes in nail structure. Hybrid and gel manicure procedures caused significant damage to the nail plate.

Sweet, Salty, and Umami Taste Sensitivity and the Hedonic Perception of Taste Sensations in Adolescent Females with Anorexia Nervosa

Magdalena Hartman-Petrycka, Ewa Klimacka-Nawrot, Katarzyna Ziora, Wanda Suchecka, Piotr Gorczyca, Katarzyna Rojewska, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska

Summary: This study analyzed the sensitivity to sweet, salty, and umami tastes in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa (AN) using three measurement methods and evaluated the hedonic perception of taste sensations. The results showed that females with AN had reduced sensitivity to salty taste and increased sensitivity to umami taste. They also assessed the sodium chloride and monosodium glutamate tastes less negatively than healthy controls. The findings suggest that taste sensitivity alterations in AN patients do not necessarily lead to a decreased hedonic assessment of taste experiences.

Wiktoria Odrzywolek, Anna Deda, Julita Zdrada, Dominika Wcislo-Dziadecka, Aleksandra Lipka-Trawinska, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska, Slawomir Wilczynski

Summary: This study quantitatively compared psoriatic skin with skin without psoriatic lesions using noninvasive imaging methods. The results showed significant differences in skin density, epidermis thickness, blood perfusion, temperature, and reflectance between psoriatic and unaffected skin. These parameters can be useful for monitoring the course of psoriasis and its treatment.

Individual characteristics, including olfactory efficiency, age, body mass index, smoking and the sex hormones status, and food preferences of women in Poland

Magdalena Hartman-Petrycka, Joanna Witkos, Agata Lebiedowska, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska

Summary: This study examined the food preferences of women in Poland and assessed the impact of factors such as sense of smell, age, BMI, smoking, and hormonal status on the pleasure derived from eating various types of food. The results showed that hormonal status had the most significant influence on food preferences, and out of the 24 food types studied, six were affected by the analyzed factors.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Nd:YAG laser in reducing psoriatic lesions. After treatment, there was an increase in skin density, a decrease in epidermal thickness, a reduction in the thickness of the SLEB layer, and a decrease in hemoglobin, indicating the potential efficacy of the Nd:YAG laser in reducing psoriatic lesions.

Who Likes Unhealthy Food with a Strong Flavour? Influence of Sex, Age, Body Mass Index, Smoking and Olfactory Efficiency on Junk Food Preferences

Magdalena Hartman-Petrycka, Joanna Witkos, Agata Lebiedowska, Barbara Blonska-Fajfrowska

Summary: Background. Unhealthy food is an important factor in the development of civilization diseases. This study aimed to determine how gender, age, body mass index, smoking, and olfactory efficiency influence the consumption of unhealthy foods. Methods. A total of 283 participants from the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland, ranging in age from 18 to 82, were interviewed and underwent olfactory tests. They also provided food preference assessments for 25 types of food products. The study assessed the influence of gender, age, body mass index, tobacco addiction, and sense of smell on unhealthy food consumption. Results. Using VARIMAX factor analysis, a coherent group of "unhealthy foods with strong flavors" was identified, including crisps, salty snacks, fast food, sugary carbonated drinks, and sour products. Younger individuals (B = -0.04; PU = -0.05, -0.03; t = -7.43, eta2 = 0.17; p < 0.001) and those with higher body mass index (B = 0.03; PU <= 0.01, 0.06; t = 1.92, eta2 = 0.01; p = 0.056) showed a greater preference for unhealthy foods. The efficiency of the sense of smell did not significantly influence the preference for the "unhealthy foods" group as a whole. Further analysis of each type of unhealthy food separately revealed that young people liked crisps, salty snacks, fast food, and sugary carbonated drinks more, men liked fast food and sugary carbonated drinks more than women, and those with a good sense of smell liked sour products. Conclusion. Based on the stated food preferences, dietary education should be targeted at young people, especially young men, to prevent the development of overweight and obesity.
