Summary: This study aimed to validate tools for evaluating eating-related distress (ERD) among advanced cancer patients and family caregivers. The researchers developed and validated questionnaires through exploratory factor analysis, face validity, and content validity. The tools showed good concurrent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. The developed tools can effectively measure ERD experienced by patients and family caregivers.

Summary: The study indicates that disability in activities of daily living is common in patients with advanced cancer or COPD, associated with increased symptom burden, and may be attenuated with the use of assistive devices. Disability generally increases with wide interindividual variation over time. Services should include rehabilitative interventions guided by individual disability in activities of daily living.

Summary: This study demonstrated the clinical benefits of enteral nutrition (EN) and parenteral nutrition and hydration (PNH) for patients with advanced cancer, showing significantly lower risk of mortality in both EN and PNH groups compared to the control group. Moreover, it was found that managing symptoms to improve oral intake is essential before initiating PNH, as EN was superior to PNH in terms of survival outcomes.

Summary: Adrenocortical cancer (ACC) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis. The best management approach involves a multidisciplinary team and can improve survival. Even in advanced cases, multimodal treatments and skillful management can lead to significant improvements in survival. However, patients with advanced ACC often suffer from severe physical and psychological symptoms and experience a decline in quality of life. The early integration of supportive and palliative care can alleviate the burden on cancer patients, mediate aggressive treatments, and improve their quality of life.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the trajectories and associations of disability in ADL in advanced cancer and/or respiratory disease, as well as appraise its measurement. The results showed that advanced cancer often follows trajectories of increasing disability, while respiratory disease does not predict any particular disability trajectory. Factors associated with increasing disability included frailty, multi-morbidity, cognitive impairment, and infection.

Summary: The study found that the 3-Day Surprise Question can be a useful screening tool to identify advanced cancer patients with impending death. By answering this question, physicians can have a certain predictive ability on the prognosis of patients, and multivariate analysis also revealed the characteristics of patients who lived longer than expected.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and patient-perceived benefit of olanzapine treatment for nausea and vomiting in advanced cancer patients. Results showed that short-term, low-dose olanzapine treatment was effective in managing multifactorial nausea and vomiting, with a correlation between perceived treatment benefit and level of nausea reduction. More confirmatory studies with longer follow-up are needed to determine the duration of effect and adverse events.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the trajectory of vital signs in cancer patients' last two weeks of life and differences in vital sign changes between cancer patients with and without opioid use using a non-wearable monitor. The results showed significant hourly increases in respiratory rate, heart rate, and apnea, as well as a difference in respiratory rate slope between opioid users and non-users. The study successfully described the high-resolution trajectory of vital signs at the natural end of life in a palliative care unit.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between antipsychotic dose and survival rate in terminally ill cancer patients with delirium. The results showed that higher doses of antipsychotics were associated with increased mortality. Therefore, starting with a low dose and carefully titrating the dose should be done to minimize potential mortality risk.

Summary: This study investigated the use of continuous deep sedation (CDS) for psycho-existential suffering in patients. It found that patients without specific religious beliefs and those with a desire for hastened death may require CDS to alleviate their suffering. For these patients, CDS lasted longer and caused more discomfort for physicians, but it may lead to better therapeutic outcomes.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of symptom worsening between advanced cancer patients receiving palliative care at home and in palliative care units (PCUs). The results showed that patients receiving palliative care at home were more likely to experience worsening of pain and drowsiness. However, after adjusting for patient background, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of symptom worsening between patients receiving palliative care at home and in PCUs.

Summary: Limited information is available on the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and pain in advanced cancer. The study investigated the relationship between serum levels of CRP and subtypes of pain, finding direct relationships between CRP, pain NRS, and pain IPOS, but no relationships between CRP, neuropathic pain, and breakthrough pain were observed.
