Transcriptional and Antagonistic Responses of Biocontrol Strain Lysobacter enzymogenes OH11 to the Plant Pathogenic Oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum

Lysobacter enzymogenes is a ubiquitous, beneficial, plant-associated bacterium emerging as a novel biological control agent. It has the potential to become a new source of antimicrobial secondary metabolites such as the Heat-Stable Antifungal Factor (HSAF), which is a broad-spectrum antimycotic with a novel mode of action. However, very little information about how L. enzymogenes detects and responds to fungi or oomycetes has been reported. An in vitro confrontation bioassay between the pathogenic oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum and the biocontrol bacterial strain L. enzymogenes OH11 was used to analyze the transcriptional changes in the bacteria that were induced by the oomycetes. Analysis was performed at three time points of the interaction, starting before inhibition zone formation until inhibition zone formation. A L. enzymogenes OH11 DNA microarray was constructed for the analysis. Microarray analysis indicated that a wide range of genes belonging to 14 diverse functions in L. enzyrnogenes were affected by P. aphaniderrnatum as critical antagonistic effects occurred. L. enzyrnogenes detected and responded to the presence of P. aphanidermatum early, but alteration of gene expression typically occurred after inhibition zone formation. The presence of P aphanidermatum increased the twitching motility and HSAF production in L. enzymogenes. We also performed a contact interaction between L. enzymogenes and P. aphanidermatum, and found that HSAF played a critical role in the interaction. Our experiments demonstrated that L. enzymogenes displayed transcriptional and antagonistic responses to P aphanidermatum in order to gain advantages in the competition with this oomycete. This study revealed new insights into the interactions between bacteria and oomycete.

Piezoelectric conduit combined with multi-channel conductive scaffold for peripheral nerve regeneration

Proper (Nb,Fe) co-alloyed TiAl-based alloy with good hot deformation processing capability

The results show that the Ti-44Al-2Nb-2Fe-0.1B alloy has lower true stress, moderate diffusion activation energy, lower stress exponent, larger hot processing window, lower dislocation density, and more adequate dynamic recrystallization, demonstrating its good hot deformation processing capability and service properties.

A new approach of Robustness-Resistance-Recovery (3Rs) to assessing flood resilience: A case study in Dongting Lake Basin

SrTiO3 nanosheets decorated with ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles as Z-scheme photocatalysts for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation and CO2 conversion

Summary: In this study, Z-scheme ZnFe2O4-SrTiO3 nanocomposite was prepared and used for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation and CO2 conversion. The nanocomposite showed significantly higher TCH degradation efficiency and CO2 photoreduction activity compared to pure ZnFe2O4 and SrTiO3. The enhanced activities were attributed to improved solar energy utilization and efficient electron-hole pair separation through a Z-scheme charge transfer model. The results suggest that ZnFe2O4-SrTiO3 nanocomposite has great potential for wastewater purification and CO2 reduction to renewable solar fuels.

A broadband, self-powered, and polarization-sensitive PdSe2 photodetector based on asymmetric van der Waals contacts

High-resolution in vivo imaging of human nailbed microvasculature by using photoacoustic microscopy

Summary: Microcirculation imaging plays a significant role in the early diagnosis and assessment of various diseases. In this study, an optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) was used to image the microvasculature of the nailbed. The sensitivity of imaging was significantly improved by hydrating the nail. In vivo experiments further demonstrated the enhanced sensitivity and practicality of OR-PAM, while the quantitative analysis of capillary loops provided valuable indicators for clinical microcirculation detection using OR-PAM.

Kai-Xin-San protects against mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease through SIRT3/NLRP3 pathway

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of Kai-Xin-San (KXS) on cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice and its neuroprotective mechanism. The results showed that KXS protected APP/PS1 mice from cognitive impairments, suppressed neuronal apoptosis and oxidative stress, and improved mitochondrial dysfunction and synaptic and neurotrophic factors. Additionally, KXS enhanced mitochondrial SIRT3 expression and reduced NLRP3 inflammasome expression in APP/PS1 mice. These findings suggest that KXS could be a potential neuroprotective agent for Alzheimer's disease progression.

Unexpected curative effect of PD-1 inhibitor in gastric cancer with brain metastasis: A case report

Summary: This case report describes a 46-year-old male patient with PD-L1 negative brain metastases (BrMs) 12 years after gastric cancer resection and chemotherapy. Treatment with the immune checkpoint inhibitor pembrolizumab resulted in a complete response of all metastatic tumors. A durable remission of the tumors was observed after 4 years of follow-up. The need for a therapeutic protocol for late-stage gastric cancer with BrMs and the exploration of biomarkers other than PD-L1 expression to predict the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors were emphasized.

The recombination regulator RecX negatively regulates heat-stable antifungal factor (HSAF) biosynthesis in Lysobacter enzymogenes

Summary: In this study, a potential regulator of HSAF biosynthesis, RecX, was identified. Deletion of recX increased HSAF production, while overexpression of recX suppressed HSAF production. It was found that RecX directly binds to the promoter region of the lafB gene to inhibit its transcription and thus decrease HSAF production in L. enzymogenes.

Heterointerface engineering of Rh/Pd metallene for hydrazine oxidation-assisted energy-saving hydrogen production

Summary: In this study, we propose a method to encapsulate rhodium nanoparticles (NPs) on a palladium metallene film using a bromine initiator for catalyzing both the oxidation and reduction reactions. The Rh/Pd film exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution and hydrazine catalytic activities due to its abundant active sites and rapid charge transfer rate. In the hydrazine-assisted water splitting system, the Rh/Pd film only requires a low overpotential to produce hydrogen.
