Trans fatty acids (TFA) increase the risk of mortality and chronic diseases. TFA intakes have fallen since reformulation, but may still be high in certain, vulnerable, groups. This paper investigates socio-economic and food consumption characteristics of high TFA consumers after voluntary reformulation in the Netherlands and UK. Post-reformulation data of adults aged 19-64 was analysed in two national surveys: the Dutch National Food Consumption Survey (DNFCS) collected 2007-2010 using 2* 24hr recalls (N = 1933) and the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) years 3& 4 collected 2010/11 and 2011/12 using 4-day food diaries (N = 848). The socio-economic and food consumption characteristics of the top 10% and remaining 90% TFA consumers were compared. Means of continuous data were compared using t-tests and categorical data means using chi-squared tests. Multivariate logistic regression models indicated which socio-demographic variables were associated with high TFA consumption. In the Dutch analyses, women and those born outside the Netherlands were more likely to be top 10% TFA consumers than men and Dutchborn. In the UK unadjusted analyses there was no significant trend in socio-economic characteristics between high and lower TFA consumers, but there were regional differences in the multivariate logistic regression analyses. In the Netherlands, high TFA consumers were more likely to be consumers of cakes, buns & pastries; cream; and fried potato than the remaining 90%. Whereas in the UK, high TFA consumers were more likely to be consumers of lamb; cheese; and dairy desserts and lower crisps and savoury snack consumers. Some socio-demographic differences between high and lower TFA consumers were evident post-reformulation. High TFA consumers in the Dutch 2007-10 survey appeared more likely to obtain TFA from artificial sources than those in the UK survey. Further analyses using more up-to-date food composition databases may be needed.

Risk of hip fracture in meat-eaters, pescatarians, and vegetarians: results from the UK Women's Cohort Study

James Webster, Darren C. Greenwood, Janet E. Cade

Summary: In the UK Women's Cohort Study, vegetarian women were found to have a higher risk of hip fracture compared to regular meat-eaters. Further research is recommended to confirm this finding in men and non-European populations and to explore the factors responsible for the observed risk difference.

Street Food and Takeaway Food Purchasing Patterns in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sofia Sousa, Ines Lanca de Morais, Gabriela Albuquerque, Marcello Gelormini, Aida Filipovic-Hadziomeragic, Dragana Stojisavljevic, Albertino Damasceno, Pedro Moreira, Joao Breda, Nuno Lunet, Patricia Padrao

Summary: This study investigated the purchasing patterns of street food and takeaway food in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, and found that takeaway venues had higher customer influx and buying rates compared to street food sites. Industrial food products were more prevalent in street food venues, while takeaway purchases mainly consisted of homemade foods. Customers in takeaway venues were more likely to buy both food and beverages, especially during lunchtime and in city centres. The findings reflect the local food culture and dietary behaviors, providing insights for designing interventions tailored to these food environments and customer habits.

Characterizing Adolescents' Dietary Intake by Taste: Results From the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey

Areej Bawajeeh, Michael A. Zulyniak, Charlotte E. L. Evans, Janet E. Cade

Summary: The taste of foods plays a significant role in adolescents' food choices and intakes. Sweet foods are the main contributors to daily energy intake, with positive associations with energy, sugar, and fat intakes. Salty food intake is linked to higher saturated fat and sodium consumption, while neutral food consumption is inversely associated with energy, carbohydrate, sugar, saturated fat, and total fat intakes. Balancing the contributions of different tasting foods could help improve adolescent diet quality.

Summary: Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular events and death. Reducing salt intake is an effective strategy to lower blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, while increasing potassium intake is associated with lower cardiovascular risk. However, in Lithuania, salt intake is twice as high as the recommended level by the World Health Organization, and potassium and iodine intakes are below the recommended levels.

Observational assessments of the relationship of dietary and pharmacological treatment on continuous measures of dysglycemia over 24 hours in women with gestational diabetes

Cassy F. Dingena, Melvin J. Holmes, Matthew D. Campbell, Janet E. Cade, Eleanor M. Scott, Michael A. Zulyniak

Summary: This study aimed to characterize continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics over 24 hours in women with gestational diabetes (GDM) and the moderating effect of treatment strategy. The results showed significant variability in glucose levels throughout the day, with the highest variability in the morning. Additionally, individuals assigned to diet+metformin had greater difficulty managing glycemia, and increased dietary protein intake may assist with the management of dysglycemia.

Tuberculosis and malnutrition: The European perspective

J. Ockenga, K. Fuhse, S. Chatterjee, R. Malykh, H. Rippin, M. Pirlich, A. Yedilbayev, K. Wickramasinghe, R. Barazzoni

Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, particularly in the European Region where the incidence and mortality rates have not significantly improved. In addition to the increasing numbers of multidrug-resistant TB, malnutrition is also a significant contributing factor to TB burden and treatment outcomes. Addressing malnutrition through widespread nutritional screening and counseling could potentially improve the management of TB and enhance patient outcomes and survival.

Summary: The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is a commonly used method in nutritional epidemiology to assess an individual's habitual dietary intake. This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ used in the DCH-NG cohort. Results showed that the FFQ provided satisfactory rankings of energy, nutrient, and food group intakes, making it suitable for epidemiological studies investigating diet and disease outcomes.

Summary: The association between salt-related knowledge, attitude, behavior (KAB) and actual salt consumption in Greek adults was investigated in this study. The results showed that the average salt intake among Greek adults exceeded the WHO recommendation, and significant differences in knowledge scores were found based on sex, age, education, and BMI. However, no direct correlation was observed between salt intake and either knowledge or behavior scores. These findings emphasize the importance of food product reforms and accelerated efforts towards reducing salt intake by industry stakeholders.
