Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between Oral-Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) assessed by the C-OIDP index and oral health status in 13-15 years old Spanish population. The study found that the extent of tooth decay, periodontal status, and occlusal imbalance significantly impact the quality of life of adolescents.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to identify and map the real-world nutrition care practices of oral health professionals and dietitians for optimizing oral health. Most articles provided self-reported data on OHP practices but lacked specific information on the care provided, while few studies examined the practices of dietitians. Barriers to nutrition care by OHPs were common, with limited information available on collaboration between dietitians and OHPs.

Summary: Limited evidence suggests that RPDs may improve OHRQoL in the short-term (up to 6 months) with very low certainty, but the long-term effect after 12 months is inconclusive. More high-quality studies are needed to support these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the predictive properties of different patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures for all-cause mortality, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and associated hospitalization. The results showed that the Baseline Dyspnea Index (BDI), St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), COPD Assessment Test (CAT), and Hyland Scale scores were significantly related to mortality. Furthermore, almost all clinical, physiological, and PRO measurements were found to be associated with the first exacerbation and associated hospitalization.

Summary: The study found that multiple myeloma patients in the United States had poorer health-related quality of life compared to the general population, with factors such as socioeconomic status, comorbidities, and treatment status being associated with worse HRQoL outcomes. More research is needed to explore the relationship between treatment patterns and HRQoL, and to identify effective interventions.

Summary: Under dry conditions, denture adhesive for dry mouth and oral moisturizer showed higher retentive force compared to denture adhesive and denture moisturizer. After 30 minutes of immersion in water, the retentive force increased for denture adhesive but decreased for oral moisturizer. During function, the retentive force remained high for denture adhesive and denture adhesive for dry mouth, while it significantly decreased for oral moisturizer and denture moisturizer. Denture adhesive for dry mouth initially had high retentive force but decreased over time due to its water content.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life of asylum seekers and refugees who arrived in Germany between 2014 and 2017. The findings showed that the physical and mental health-related quality of life of these individuals was higher and lower, respectively, compared to the German norm. Factors such as female sex, older age, unemployment, and being separated, divorced or widowed were found to be negatively associated with health-related quality of life.

Summary: The reporting practices in literature tend to focus more on relative risks rather than absolute risks. Most studies rarely report similarly adjusted underlying absolute risks, which could lead to an overinterpretation of the risk increase of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) related to poor oral health.

Summary: Studies have found that dyslipidemia plays an important role in promoting periodontal breakdown. This study aimed to explore the theoretical pathways between dyslipidemia and periodontitis. Data from 11,917 US adults were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that dyslipidemia is associated with periodontitis directly and indirectly through HbA1c and obesity. These findings highlight the need for a multi-professional approach to address the common risk factors of oral and noncommunicable diseases.

Summary: This study investigated the pathways from micronutrient intake and serum levels to Chronic Oral Diseases Burden using data from NHANES III (n = 7936) and NHANES 2011-2014 (n = 4929). The results showed that higher micronutrient intake and higher vitamin D serum levels were associated with a lower burden of chronic oral diseases. These findings suggest that healthy diet policies can contribute to the prevention and reduction of caries, periodontitis, obesity, and other non-communicable diseases.

Summary: The study aimed to validate the agreement between self-report and clinical examination of oral conditions and evaluate the influence of sociodemographic factors on the accuracy of self-reporting among women aged 60 and older. Results showed high levels of agreement in the self-reporting of edentulism and the use of dental prostheses among older women. However, there were differences observed, particularly among women with lower income and education levels.

Summary: Increased dental overjet in adolescence is a clinically relevant outcome associated with the complexity and high cost of treatment. Breastfeeding has a protective effect on dental overjet, with 63.1% of the effect mediated by pacifier use. However, the direct effect of breastfeeding alone on dental overjet was not statistically significant.

Summary: Periodontitis has been increasing in Brazil since 2005, despite a reduction in smoking. High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is closely associated with the prevalence of periodontitis. Additionally, overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia are also contributing factors to periodontitis prevalence in Brazilian adults.

Summary: The World Health Organization member states have proposed a comprehensive Global Strategy on Oral Health in order to achieve universal oral health coverage by 2030. However, challenges and barriers, such as persistent inequalities, pose obstacles to achieving this goal. In low- and middle-income countries, oral health issues have been neglected, leading to increased inequalities. Conversely, in high-income countries, there is excessive dental treatment for some individuals while those with greater needs receive inadequate dental care. It is necessary to analyze the specific needs of individual countries, train oral health professionals with a new philosophy of care, and optimize existing resources. Moving away from a person-centered focus has resulted in individual and societal problems, including under-/overdiagnosis and under-/overtreatment. The person-centered approach takes into account the perceptions, needs, preferences, and circumstances of individuals and populations. The use of patient-reported outcome measures in dentistry to prioritize the individual in treatment lags behind other areas. This paper discusses the challenges and potential solutions of patient-reported outcome measures in dentistry for achieving universal oral health coverage.

Summary: This study evaluated the 3-year effects of implant-retained mandibular overdentures on oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and bone remodeling. Differences between atrophic and nonatrophic patients were confirmed in terms of bone loss, functional limitation, and handicap domains. Nonatrophic patients showed significant bone resorption after 3 years, while atrophic patients showed improvement in bone area. This study suggests that bone atrophy has an impact on OHRQoL and bone remodeling.
