Summary: This study investigated the susceptibility of 73 Brazilian strains of Leishmania infantum to miltefosine, showing relatively low heterogeneity in miltefosine susceptibility. The results suggest that Brazilian L. infantum may not have decreased susceptibility to miltefosine, indicating the potential for future clinical evaluation of miltefosine for VL treatment in Brazil.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the addition of TARE to second-line chemotherapy for CLM patients results in longer progression-free survival and hepatic progression-free survival, with an improved objective response rate. However, there was no significant difference in overall survival between the two groups, and the rate of grade 3 adverse events was higher in the TARE group. Further subset analyses are needed to identify the ideal patient population for TARE benefit.

Summary: Since the first case of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) recorded in Brazil in 1913, epidemics have been observed in the Central-West region, with intensified expansion and urbanization from 1980. This systematic review examined 20 studies published between 2002 and 2020 to understand the factors associated with VL in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Distrito Federal. The occurrence of VL in the Central-West region was found to be related to climatic variables, socioeconomic factors, urban infrastructure vulnerability, presence of the vector and animals, and migration processes. Studies on regional aspects of VL epidemiology can inform strategies for better control.

Summary: A study conducted in a VL-endemic area in Brazil found a prevalence of 9.11% of asymptomatic HIV-Leishmania coinfection among HIV-positive patients. Factors such as race, marital status, and HIV viral load were significantly different between HIV mono-infected and HIV-Leishmania coinfected groups.

Summary: This study analyzed the factors associated with Leishmania infantum infection in dogs from urban areas endemic for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in Brazil. The results showed that male dogs and dogs living outdoors were more likely to be infected, while dogs living in households rearing chickens were less likely to be infected. The protective association between purebred dogs and CVL was stronger among dogs older than seven years.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and evaluate the accuracy of antibody rapid testing in a prison complex in Brasilia during the COVID-19 outbreak. The study found a high seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies within the prison complex, with a significant number of asymptomatic infections. The study recommends including prisoners and prison staff in priority vaccination groups and validating the performance of LFIA tests.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the frequency and factors associated with Post-COVID-19 Syndrome (PCS) in COVID-19 survivors after 3 and 6 months of hospital discharge. The prevalence of PCS was 81% and 61% after 3 and 6 months, respectively. The main symptoms included hair loss, fatigue, and memory loss. Female gender, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and pronation during hospitalization were identified as relevant risk factors for PCS.

Summary: This study is one of the largest surveys conducted in Latin America, covering the entire malaria endemic area in the Brazilian Amazon. The results indicate that a significant proportion of the population in this region is at risk of hemolysis if exposed to primaquine and its congener drug tafenoquine. Therefore, the adoption of G6PD deficiency screening protocols is crucial for ensuring the safety of individuals treated with these drugs.

Summary: HIV exceptionalism refers to the special approach required for testing due to the unique nature of the disease. Many HIV infected individuals are not tested until years after visiting healthcare facilities, particularly emergency departments. This raises ethical concerns about implementing universal screening programs in these sensitive environments. Therefore, human rights in patient care provides a crucial theoretical framework for analyzing ethical and legal dilemmas in clinical encounters.
