Layla S. Mofid, Martin Casapia, Antonio Montresor, Elham Rahme, Grace S. Marquis, Jozef Vercruysse, Lindsay H. Allen, Brittany Blouin, Hugo Razuri, Lidsky Pezo, Theresa W. Gyorkos

Summary: The World Health Organization recommends deworming to reduce soil-transmitted helminth (STH)-attributable morbidity in women of reproductive age. A study in Peru assessed the impact of postpartum deworming on infant milk intake, but found no significant difference in milk intake between the albendazole and placebo groups at 1- and 6-month postpartum. Infants born to mothers with Trichuris trichiura infection had higher milk intakes, but infection intensity did not significantly affect milk intake.

Deworming women of reproductive age during adolescence and pregnancy: what is the impact on morbidity from soil-transmitted helminths infection?

Carolin Vegvari, Federica Giardina, Sumali Bajaj, Veronica Malizia, Robert J. Hardwick, James E. Truscott, Antonio Montresor, Sake J. de Vlas, Luc E. Coffeng, Roy M. Anderson

Summary: Annual deworming treatment for adolescent girls can significantly reduce the prevalence of moderate and heavy infections, while deworming treatment for women of reproductive age during pregnancy and lactation has a limited effect and may not achieve the desired target. Continued school-based treatment could indirectly reduce the force of infection on women of reproductive age and potentially eliminate morbidity in this group. Monitoring of interventions targeting women of reproductive age is recommended to assess effectiveness.

Preventive chemotherapy for the control of strongyloidiasis in school-age children: Estimating the ivermectin need

Donal Bisanzio, Antonio Montresor, Michael French, Richard Reithinger, Paola Rodari, Zeno Bisoffi, Dora Buonfrate

Summary: This study estimates the global number of people affected by Strongyloides stercoralis and the demand for ivermectin treatment for school-age children; an estimated 283.9-160.7 million school-age children worldwide would require deworming intervention, with a focus on countries like India, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nigeria; the analysis may support endemic countries in evaluating the quantity of ivermectin needed for integrating strongyloidiasis into existing STH programs and may encourage the production of generic ivermectin.

Impact of preventive chemotherapy on transmission of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Pemba Island, United Republic of Tanzania, 1994-2021

Shaali Ame, Fatma Kabole, Alphoncina Masako Nanai, Pauline Mwinzi, Denise Mupfasoni, Said Mohammed Ali, Antonio Montresor

Summary: Despite more than 25 years of preventive chemotherapy for soil-transmitted helminth infections on Pemba Island, high prevalence and intensity remain due to irregular treatment, favorable transmission conditions, low sensitivity, high population density, and poor sanitation. Improving sanitation coverage is crucial for reducing infection rates and intensity.

Reduction in DALYs lost due to soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis from 2000 to 2019 is parallel to the increase in coverage of the global control programmes

Antonio Montresor, Pauline Mwinzi, Denise Mupfasoni, Amadou Garba

Summary: Preventive chemotherapy interventions for soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis have significantly reduced the number of disability-adjusted life years lost in the past 19 years. Deworming is considered one of the most cost-effective public health interventions due to its low cost and high impact.

Singa, Pholona Amam, Mary Masheti, James A. Berkley, Judd L. Walson, Kirkby D. Tickell

Summary: This study evaluated the contribution of household food insecurity and dietary diversity to the time to recovery from wasting in children. The findings suggest that food insecurity and dietary diversity are not major determinants of recovery, but consumption of legumes and nuts prior to diagnosis may lead to quicker recovery.

Considering Risks to Researchers and Staff in Low-Resource Settings during Public Health Crises: A Proposed Conceptual Model

Krystle M. Perez, Muhammad Asim, Elliott M. Weiss, Gregory C. Valentine, Avinash Kavi, Manjunath S. Somannavar, Ibezimako Iwuh, Chikondi Chiweza, Kirkby D. Tickell, Benson O. Singa, Kristin Beima-Sofie, Maneesh Batra, Judd L. Walson, Rachel Umoren, Maureen Kelley, Sarah Saleem

Summary: Human subjects research protections primarily focus on minimizing harm and maximizing benefits for participants. However, in low-resource settings, complex challenges such as poverty, geopolitical unrest, and climate crises increase the burdens of research. While there has been attention given to ethical responsibilities in global health research, less consideration has been given to the risks faced by frontline research staff in these settings, especially during public health crises. This article highlights these risks and proposes a framework for systematically addressing them in research proposals and protocol reviews, involving funders, institutions, principal investigators, and research team leaders.

Representativeness of a mobile phone-based coverage evaluation survey following mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths: a comparison of participation between two cross-sectional surveys

Rohan Michael Ramesh, William E. Oswald, Gideon John Israel, Kumudha Aruldas, Sean Galagan, Hugo Legge, Saravanakumar Puthupalayam Kaliappan, Judd Walson, Katherine E. Halliday, Sitara S. R. Ajjampur

Summary: This study compares the representativeness and implementation of phone-based and in-person surveys in measuring the coverage of mass drug administration for eliminating soil-transmitted helminth infection. The results show that phone-based surveys may under-represent households at higher risk of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), indicating that in-person surveys are more appropriate for measuring MDA coverage.

Intestinal disturbances associated with mortality of children with complicated severe malnutrition

Bijun Wen, Amber Farooqui, Celine Bourdon, Nawar Tarafdar, Moses Ngari, Emmanuel Chimwezi, Johnstone Thitiri, Laura Mwalekwa, Judd L. Walson, Wieger Voskuijl, James A. Berkley, Robert H. J. Bandsma

Summary: This study investigates the role of intestinal disturbances in the mortality of children hospitalized with complicated severe malnutrition. The findings suggest an indirect association between intestinal disturbances and acute mortality, with specific differences in fecal metabolomes and no differences in enteropathy markers between children who died and those who survived. The study improves our understanding of the underlying pathophysiological pathways of mortality in children with severe malnutrition.
