Background In many affluent countries, food-insecure households use food pantries to keep their family fed. The long-term dependence of many users on these programs calls for a systematic review of studies on the nutritional quality of food provided by food pantries. Objective The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the current scientific evidence about the nutritional quality of food bags distributed by food pantries. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in the electronic databases PubMed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and Psychology Behavioral Sciences Collection to identify cross-sectional, cohort, and intervention studies reporting baseline data conducted in high-income countries and published between 1980 and 2015, which reported the nutritional quality of food bags distributed by food pantries. Identified citations were screened in two stages and data were independently extracted by two authors using a predefined data sheet. The quality of included studies was evaluated using criteria of an adapted Ottawa Scale. The systematic review was reported in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Results Applying the two-stage screening, 9 of 1,546 articles were identified for inclusion. Nutritional quality of food bags varied widely between and within studies. Milk products, vitamins A and C, and calcium were provided in particularly low amounts. None of the studies were nationally representative and only a few studies controlled for the household composition of the recipients of food bags. Conclusion Food pantries likely have a strong influence on users' diets, but the food pantries examined in the selected studies were largely unable to support healthy diets. The distribution of more perishable foods would increase users' diet quality and may have an immense potential to address malnutrition in vulnerable population groups.

Development and Validation of the General Dietary Behavior Inventory (GDBI) in Scope of International Nutrition Guidelines

Gerrit Engelmann, Matthias Marsall, Eva-Maria Skoda, Nadja Knoll-Pientka, Laura Baeuerle, Nanette Stroebele-Benschop, Martin Teufel, Alexander Baeuerle

Summary: Unhealthy eating habits are linked to various diseases, and there are currently no economical or behavior-related questionnaires available in German to assess general dietary behavior. This validation study aimed to develop and validate a new questionnaire based on international nutrition recommendations, with results confirming the instrument's construct and criterion validity. The General Dietary Behavior Inventory (GDBI) was found to be a validated and economical tool for assessing general dietary behavior, allowing for interventions to promote healthy eating habits in line with global nutrition guidelines.

The Role of Dishware Size in the Perception of Portion Size in Children and Adolescents with Obesity

Annica Franziska Doersam, Alisa Weiland, Helene Sauer, Katrin Elisabeth Giel, Nanette Stroebele-Benschop, Stephan Zipfel, Paul Enck, Isabelle Mack

Summary: The influence of dishware on portion size perception in children and adolescents is inconclusive. This study found that there were no substantial differences in the intuitive evaluation of portion sizes between children and adolescents with obesity and a normal weight. However, during the cognitive evaluation, those with obesity estimated the amount of water in the glasses more correctly compared to those with a normal weight, while they estimated the food amount in the bowls and plates less accurately.

Quantifying the Developments of Shortages in Public Health Specialists in the Public Health Service and its Effects

Peter Tinnemann, Elke Bruns-Philipps, Jakob Schumacher

Summary: The institutions of the Public Health Service at all levels of government in Germany play a crucial role in public health, but there has been a decline in the number of public health consultants in recent years, especially in administrative and public corporate roles. This trend poses a threat to public health and the functioning of democratic welfare states.

Food Bank Operations during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Germany

Anja Simmet, Nanette Stroebele-Benschop

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on food bank operations in Germany, with over half of participating food banks closed in spring but nearly all reopening in summer with alternative modes of food distribution and response measures implemented to address the challenges. However, their reliance on volunteers seems to make them less resilient to challenges like COVID-19.

Changes in lifestyle, diet, and body weight during the first COVID 19 'lockdown' in a student sample

K. Palmer, A. Bschaden, N. Stroebele-Benschop

Summary: This study retrospectively examined changes in lifestyle and body weight in students at a German university during the first COVID-19 lockdown period. Nearly half of the students reported perceived body weight changes, with factors such as food consumption and physical activity frequency being predictive of weight changes. Additional public health efforts are needed to support this population group during the ongoing global pandemic.

Summary: This study analyzed reporting data of children in Frankfurt and found that SARS-CoV-2 infections in children are less frequent and less severe than in adults. The study also showed that hygiene rules and contact tracing measures have been effective in preventing large outbreaks, even in the presence of variants of concern.

Summary: In medical science and practice, dietary behavior is usually assessed using extensive questionnaires or questionnaires focusing on psychological aspects. However, these questionnaires often fail to capture the full range of dietary behavior or have limited effectiveness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate an existing dietary behavior questionnaire and validate its effectiveness.

Summary: Obesity and sarcopenic obesity have negative impacts on the bio-psycho-social health and quality of life of older adults. This study reviewed randomized controlled trials on lifestyle interventions for older people with (sarcopenic) obesity, and found heterogeneity in outcome definition, assessment methods, measurement units, and measurement times. Psychological and quality of life domains were underrepresented in the studies.

Public Awareness, Attitude and Empathy Regarding the Management of Surplus Dairy Calves

Mareike Herrler, Mizeck G. G. Chagunda, Nanette Stroebele-Benschop

Summary: Media attention on animal welfare issues related to surplus calves in dairy farming is increasing. A representative online survey in south-west Germany indicates that although the public is aware of some common practices in dairy calf rearing, they are concerned about the well-being of dairy calves and have compassion for these animals. Organic food consumption frequency is influenced by age, income, attitude, and problem awareness, while consumption of beef/veal products is influenced by gender, presence of children, attitude, and empathy. There seems to be a lack of awareness or connection between the dairy and meat industries in the public's consumption behavior.

Potential Interventions to Improve Dietary behaviors among Long-haul Truck Drivers in Germany. Results of a qualitative Study

Andreas Bschaden, Janica Knecht, Siegfried Rothe, Nanette Stroebele-Benschop

Summary: Long-distance drivers face challenges in maintaining a balanced diet due to lack of shopping facilities and unsatisfactory food quality and variety at rest stops. Their dissatisfaction with catering options on multi-day journeys highlights the need for interventions to improve daily nutritional routines. Identifying driver typologies and their specific problems and needs can guide targeted intervention development, which should be further explored in quantitative studies.
