Summary: Food insecurity is linked to poor mental health and increased risk of suicide. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the US can be expanded to more households by eliminating the asset test or raising the income limit. This study found that the expansion of SNAP eligibility is associated with decreased rates of major depressive episodes, mental illness, serious mental illness, and suicidal ideation among adults. Therefore, adopting policies to expand SNAP eligibility can contribute to reducing mental health and suicidality outcomes at the population level.

Summary: This study examines the responsiveness of baobab supply to price and non-price factors in Kenya and finds that baobab collectors are responsive to both types of incentives. The supply and profits of baobab pulp are positively influenced by baobab pulp price, but negatively affected by labor, transport, and packaging input costs. Non-price incentives such as other household incomes, number of baobab trees on a household's farm, number of buyers known to the collector, and number of children also play a positive role in baobab supply and profits. Input demands for labor, transport, and packaging are also responsive to baobab prices, input prices, and non-price factors. Market development, rigorous research and education, and infrastructure expansion are crucial for promoting baobab supply.

Summary: This article examines the dimensions of food poverty that are captured by indices and indicators of food insecurity and general poverty assessments. It points out that the social dimension of food poverty is often under-reported and lacks adequate assessment tools. The existing indices and indicators of food insecurity and general poverty assessments are critically reviewed, and suggestions for assessing social food poverty in policy and practice are derived.

Summary: This study aimed to identify implementation challenges and facilitators of charitable food system and healthcare partnerships from the food bank perspective. The research found unique implementation challenges exist at all levels of food bank/healthcare partnerships including the partnership, program, and system levels. Collaborative discussions among leaders of charitable food systems and healthcare systems are needed to overcome these challenges and facilitate sustainable, equitable implementation of food bank/healthcare partnerships.

Summary: This paper examines the effects of unemployment insurance expansions on household food insecurity in the United States. The study finds that increasing state weekly UI benefits can reduce the likelihood and severity of food insecurity among eligible families. Additionally, the research provides strong evidence of program substitution between UI and SNAP, with potential cost savings for SNAP.

Summary: This paper reviews the literature on food insecurity and food bank use in the UK. It highlights the limited role of food banks in addressing food insecurity and suggests that many people experiencing food insecurity do not receive help from food banks. The relationship between food insecurity and food bank use is complex and influenced by various factors, including the nature and availability of food banks, other support services, and individual-level factors. The paper also emphasizes the need for policy interventions to address rising living costs and the increasing demand for food banks.

Summary: This study examined the associations between food insecurity, SNAP participation, and ultra-processed food consumption. The findings showed that more severe food insecurity and SNAP participation were both associated with higher levels of ultra-processed food consumption. Furthermore, SNAP participation modified the association between food insecurity and ultra-processed food consumption.

Summary: In the United States, food banks are crucial in reducing food insecurity by distributing donated food to those in need. One of their challenges is to distribute food donations equitably while minimizing waste. This paper presents a model to help food banks in effectively and fairly distributing perishable food donations and provides guidance on how to strategically control inequities.

Summary: Unhealthy eating habits are linked to various diseases, and there are currently no economical or behavior-related questionnaires available in German to assess general dietary behavior. This validation study aimed to develop and validate a new questionnaire based on international nutrition recommendations, with results confirming the instrument's construct and criterion validity. The General Dietary Behavior Inventory (GDBI) was found to be a validated and economical tool for assessing general dietary behavior, allowing for interventions to promote healthy eating habits in line with global nutrition guidelines.

Summary: The influence of dishware on portion size perception in children and adolescents is inconclusive. This study found that there were no substantial differences in the intuitive evaluation of portion sizes between children and adolescents with obesity and a normal weight. However, during the cognitive evaluation, those with obesity estimated the amount of water in the glasses more correctly compared to those with a normal weight, while they estimated the food amount in the bowls and plates less accurately.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on food bank operations in Germany, with over half of participating food banks closed in spring but nearly all reopening in summer with alternative modes of food distribution and response measures implemented to address the challenges. However, their reliance on volunteers seems to make them less resilient to challenges like COVID-19.

Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate an existing dietary behavior questionnaire and validate its effectiveness.

Summary: Obesity and sarcopenic obesity have negative impacts on the bio-psycho-social health and quality of life of older adults. This study reviewed randomized controlled trials on lifestyle interventions for older people with (sarcopenic) obesity, and found heterogeneity in outcome definition, assessment methods, measurement units, and measurement times. Psychological and quality of life domains were underrepresented in the studies.

Summary: Media attention on animal welfare issues related to surplus calves in dairy farming is increasing. A representative online survey in south-west Germany indicates that although the public is aware of some common practices in dairy calf rearing, they are concerned about the well-being of dairy calves and have compassion for these animals. Organic food consumption frequency is influenced by age, income, attitude, and problem awareness, while consumption of beef/veal products is influenced by gender, presence of children, attitude, and empathy. There seems to be a lack of awareness or connection between the dairy and meat industries in the public's consumption behavior.

Summary: Long-distance drivers face challenges in maintaining a balanced diet due to lack of shopping facilities and unsatisfactory food quality and variety at rest stops. Their dissatisfaction with catering options on multi-day journeys highlights the need for interventions to improve daily nutritional routines. Identifying driver typologies and their specific problems and needs can guide targeted intervention development, which should be further explored in quantitative studies.
