This study examines the relationship between the use of modern food retailers and health outcomes using data from a survey of 1,180 urban households in Indonesia. The dependent variables include adult and child body-mass index and the share of individuals overweight and obese. After controlling for individual and household characteristics and using standard and Lewbel instrumental variable approaches to control for unobservable characteristics, we do not find a statistically significant relationship between use of supermarkets and adult nutrition measures. On the other hand, there is mixed evidence for a negative effect of supermarkets on child nutrition, particularly for those in high-income households.

Fijian food shopping behaviour: implications for policy makers and smallholder farmers

Craig Johns, Wendy J. Umberger, Pamela Lyon, Rio Maligalig

Summary: This study aims to understand changes in urban Fijian food shopping behavior and its implications for the local food industry by identifying different consumer groups. Cluster analysis identified five distinct urban household clusters based on food shopping behavior, with the highest income cluster preferring to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from modern supermarkets rather than the traditional market. This growth in supermarkets raises concerns for local smallholder farmers who rely on traditional market channels. The study highlights the importance of understanding the transformation of the retail food industry and its impact on smallholder farmers in Fiji, providing insights for other small island developing states (SIDS).
