Summary: This study found that the hormone RGP in starfish larvae can induce spawning, and this activity is caused by the specific PpeRGP hormone in Patiria pectinifera, not 1-methyladenine. The expression of PpeRGP mRNA was also found in the larvae, and immunohistochemical observation showed that PpeRGP is mainly distributed in the peripheral adhesive papilla of the larvae arms. These findings suggest that RGP exists in the larvae before metamorphosis and potentially plays a role other than regulating gonad development in the early development of starfish.

Summary: In this study, single-cell RNA-seq analysis of starfish embryos was performed to identify the expression profiles of development-relevant genes in specific cell types. By comparing homologous gene expression profiles in chordate embryos, the evolution of the chordate body plan from a deuterostome ancestor, which also gave rise to the echinoderm body plan, was discussed and proposed.

Summary: The bivoltine strain of domestic silkworm and wild mulberry silkworm differ in the molecular mechanisms involved in diapause induction, influenced by environmental factors. In the bivoltine strain, temperature signals affect diapause determination through TRPA1 and DH signaling pathways, while diapause in the wild mulberry silkworm is photoperiod-dependent. The DH signaling pathway and thermal sensitivity of TRPA1 are conserved in both species.

Summary: Environmental temperature is crucial for all forms of life, and thermal tolerance defines the habitats used by a species. This study compared heat tolerance and avoidance temperatures in tadpoles from different species, and found that these two parameters were positively correlated and consistent with the thermal conditions of habitats. The difference in avoidance temperature among species was larger than that in heat tolerance, indicating the importance of heat avoidance responses in habitat selection. Furthermore, a functional change in TRPA1 was found to play a crucial role in thermal adaptation processes.

Summary: This study investigated the MHC of various Japanese frog species to better understand their resistance to the deadly chytrid fungus. The research found that all examined East Asian frogs contained at least one MHC-IIb allele belonging to supertype ST-1, indicating a conservation of functional properties in the peptide binding sites of MHC-II among East Asian frogs. The study also suggested that MHC-IIb supertypes ST-1 and ST-2 have higher overall peptide binding ability, regardless of the source of the peptides.

Summary: This study investigated the functional properties and physiological roles of TRPV1 in masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae), a species of salmonids that prefers cool environments.
