4-(E)-{(p-tolylimino)-methylbenzene-1,2-diol} (TIMBD) suppresses HIV1-gp120 mediated production of IL6 and IL8 but not CCL5

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been associated with inflammatory effects that may potentially result in neurodegenerative changes and a number of newer chemotherapeutic agents are being tested to ameliorate these effects. In this study, we investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory activity of a novel resveratrol analog 4-(E)-{(p-tolylimino)-methylbenzene-1,2-diol} (TIMBD) against HIV1-gp120 induced neuroinflammation in SVG astrocytes. SVG astrocytic cells were pretreated with TIMBD or resveratrol (RES) and then transfected with a plasmid encoding HIV1-gp120. The mRNA and protein expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines IL6, IL8 and CCL5 were determined. Protein expression levels of NF-kappa B, AP1, p-STAT3, p-AKT, p-IKKs and p-p38 MAPK were also determined. TIMBD inhibited gp120-induced RNA and protein expression levels of IL6 and IL8, but not that of CCL5 in SVG astrocytes. Moreover, TIMBD attenuated gp120-induced phosphorylation of cJUN, cFOS, STAT3, p38-MAPK, AKT and IKKs, and the nuclear translocation of NF-kappa B p-65 subunit whereas RES mostly affected NF-kappa B protein expression levels. Our results suggest that TIMBD exerts anti-inflammatory effects better than that of RES in SVG astrocytes in vitro. These effects seem to be regulated by AP1, STAT-3 and NF-kappa B signaling pathways. TIMBD may thus have a potential of being a novel agent for treating HIV1-gp120-mediated neuroinflammatory diseases.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical investigation and evaluation of the thermal characteristics of a closed-loop pulsating heat pipe are performed. The volume of fluid method is used to simulate the two-phase flow inside the heat pipe, and the numerical results are compared and validated with experimental data. The study concludes that a filling ratio of 65% is the optimized charge quality for the current configuration of the pulsating heat pipe.

Drying kinetics and economic analysis of bitter gourd flakes drying inside hybrid greenhouse dryer

Summary: In this study, a heat storage-based hybrid greenhouse dryer was developed and analyzed for drying bitter gourd flakes under the climatic condition of Ranchi, India. The drying efficiency, drying kinetics, property analysis, economic analysis, embodied energy, and CO2 mitigation of the hybrid greenhouse dryer were evaluated. The results showed that the proposed system significantly reduced the drying time compared to open sun drying, and it had superior metal content and environmental sustainability.

Designs, Performance and Economic Feasibility of Domestic Solar Dryers

Summary: This article provides an overview of solar drying technologies for small rural agricultural farms, focusing on domestic applications. A significant amount of perishable items are wasted annually at the household level due to various reasons. The article reviews and presents natural and forced convection solar dryers, highlighting their temperature and thermal efficiency. Natural convection solar dryers are suitable for rural areas due to their simple design and lower requirements, while forced convection solar dryers offer better performance and faster drying time for high moisture content products. The designs of indirect and mixed-mode solar dryers in domestic applications are rare. Solar dryers have the potential to reduce drying costs by 50% and improve returns by 30%.
