Although alcohol is an established risk factor of head and neck cancer (HNC), insufficiencies exist in the literature in several aspects. We analyzed detailed alcohol consumption data (amount and type of alcoholic beverage) of 811 HNC patients and 940 controls to evaluate the association between alcohol and HNC by HNC sites and by genotypes of ADH1B and ALDH2. Alcohol was associated with an increased HNC risk in a dose-response relationship, with the highest risk observed for hypopharyngeal cancer, followed by oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancers. Liquor showed a stronger positive association with HNC than beer and wine. The highest HNC risk occurred in individuals with the slow ADH1B and slow/non-functional ALDH2 genotype combination. In our study population, 21.8% of HNCs, 55.7% of oropharyngeal cancers, and 89.1% of hypopharyngeal cancers could be attributed to alcohol. Alcohol accounted for 47.3% of HNCs among individuals with the slow ADH1B and slow/non-functional ALDH2 genotype combination. The HNC risk associated with alcohol became comparable to that of never/ occasional drinkers after ten or more years of cessation from regular alcohol drinking. In conclusion, alcohol use is associated with an increased HNC risk, particularly for individuals with slow ethanol metabolism. HNC incidence may be reduced by alcohol cessation.

Experience of sorafenib treatment in differentiated thyroid cancer from Taiwan

Chen-Yuan Lin, Jeffrey S. Chang, Shih-Ming Huang, Chung-Jye Hung, Chien-Ling Hung, Chwen-Tzuei Chang, Horng-Ren Yang, Te-Chun Hsieh, Yu-Hui Huang, Hui-Jen Tsai

Summary: In this study, we investigated the real-world experience of sorafenib in treating advanced DTC patients in Taiwan. Most patients started with a dose of 200 mg twice daily and had a mean daily maintenance dose of 433 mg. The most common toxicity of sorafenib was hand foot skin reaction (69%), followed by diarrhea (42%), and skin rash (33%).

Summary: This study investigates the position of the lingual artery in the tongue base through intraoperative ultrasound imaging and evaluates the impact of using ultrasound assistance on bleeding complications during transoral robotic surgery. Results show that patients undergoing surgery with intraoperative ultrasound assistance had shorter operation time, lower total blood loss, and greater tongue base reduction volume.

c-Myc promotes lymphatic metastasis of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor through VEGFC upregulation

Tsung-Ming Chang, Pei-Yi Chu, Wen-Chun Hung, Yan-Shen Shan, Hui-You Lin, Kuo-Wei Huang, Jeffrey S. Chang, Li-Tzong Chen, Hui-Jen Tsai

Summary: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET) is a type of pancreatic tumor with neuroendocrine differentiation. Early stage pNET can be treated with surgical resection for long-term survival, while pNET with metastasis has a poor prognosis. In this study, it was found that c-Myc overexpression is associated with lymph node metastasis in pNET xenograft mice. Combination therapy using an mTOR inhibitor and c-Myc inhibitor or VEGFC-neutralizing protein reduced lymph node metastasis in mice with c-Myc overexpression, indicating potential therapeutic targets for pNET.

Summary: The incidence of NETs in Taiwan has been on the rise in recent decades, with a notable improvement in the survival rate of pancreatic NETs. Female and younger patients tend to have better survival rates, and those diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 show improved survival compared to earlier years.

Summary: This study found a positive association between seropositivity to HPV16 E7 and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) risk, particularly among nonbetel quid or noncigarette users. Seropositivity to HPV16 E7 also showed moderate agreement with P16 expression in OPC, suggesting that HPV may be an important risk factor for OPC in Taiwan.

Nitrogen Functionalities of Amino-Functionalized Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for Highly Efficient Enhancement of Antimicrobial Therapy to Eliminate Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Utilization as a Contrast Agent

Wen-Shuo Kuo, Ping-Ching Wu, Chi-Yao Hung, Chia-Yuan Chang, Jiu-Yao Wang, Pei-Chi Chen, Miao-Hsi Hsieh, Sheng-Han Lin, Chan-Chi Chang, Yen-Sung Lin

Summary: In this study, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) functionalized with amino groups and doped with nitrogen (amino-N-GQDs) were synthesized and demonstrated to be effective photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT), generating more reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared to conventional GQDs. The amino-N-GQDs also exhibited superior optical properties, high stability, and intrinsic luminescence, making them suitable as contrast probes for biomedical imaging. Furthermore, the amino-N-GQDs showed potential for clinical applications by effectively eliminating multidrug-resistant bacteria in PDT.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found no significant association between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer risk, even at high levels of drinking. There was also no significant association between alcohol use and pancreatic cancer among individuals genetically susceptible to the carcinogenic effect of alcohol. Overall, alcohol drinking was not a significant contributor to the occurrence of pancreatic cancer in Taiwan.

Summary: This study evaluated swallowing function in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and identified risk factors for poor swallowing outcomes. Oropharyngeal tumors were found to have worse swallowing function, while nasopharyngeal tumors were associated with better swallowing function. Older age, multiple HNCs, and a history of radiotherapy were identified as important risk factors for poor swallowing outcomes.
