Summary: This study investigated risk factors for positive surgical margins in oropharyngeal salivary gland malignancies using the national cancer database. Factors influencing positive surgical margins include age, tumor stage, tumor type, and treatment at lower volume institutions. The use of transoral robotic surgical approach was not associated with positive surgical margins.

Summary: This study utilized the National Cancer Database to analyze the incidence of occult nodal metastasis and its impact on overall survival in different subtypes of malignant salivary gland tumors. The results showed that occult nodal metastasis was relatively common and had a significantly negative effect on overall survival.

Summary: The risk of SPM increases in MiSGC patients, especially in female patients and those who received radiotherapy. Factors such as age at diagnosis, race, SEER stage, histology, and tumor site are significant prognostic indicators for MiSGC patients. Surveillance for SPM is important for long-term management of MiSGC patients.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of inflammatory biomarkers, including SIRI, SII, NLR, and PLR, on the overall survival of patients with malignant salivary gland tumors. The results showed that the combination of SII + SIRI can independently predict the overall survival of patients after surgery for these tumors.

Summary: Relapse after surgery for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a significant problem. The current histopathological diagnostic techniques are not sensitive enough for the detection of oral cancer and minimal residual disease in surgical margins. In this study, we used gene expression and noncoding RNA profiles to identify biomarker signatures for tumors and marginal tissue zones. These biomarkers could potentially improve the detection of tumor cells and enhance surgical outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, clinicopathologic behavior, management, and outcome of pediatric patients with salivary gland malignancies. The findings showed that pediatric SG malignancies are rare and have a favorable outcome at 5 years.

Summary: Carcinomas of the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity are a rare and heterogeneous group of malignant tumors. In this study, we compared clinical and pathological features and oncological outcomes in patients with different kinds of minor salivary gland cancer who received primary surgical therapy. We found different rates of cervical metastases and disease recurrence in dependence on the tumor entity, suggesting the need for different treatment approaches for each tumor entity.

Summary: Cabozantinib is registered at a fixed dose of 60 mg, but dose reductions are often necessary due to toxicity. Higher cabozantinib exposure has been associated with improved clinical efficacy in renal cell carcinoma patients. This study found that salivary gland carcinoma patients had higher cabozantinib exposure than RCC patients, with dose reductions needed in the majority of patients in both groups. More research is needed to determine the optimal exposure and starting dose for balancing efficacy and toxicity.

Summary: Salivary gland cancers are rare malignancies of the head and neck region, with diagnosis based on histology and molecular profiling. Treatment consists of surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy. Recent discussions and insights from a conference have provided updates on the research and future challenges in salivary gland cancers.

Summary: The study showed that high-grade histology and vascular invasion are associated with occult metastases in patients with salivary gland carcinoma. It is recommended to perform elective neck dissection for patients with T3/T4 tumors, high-grade histology, or unknown histological grade. In patients with submandibular, sublingual, or minor salivary gland carcinomas, levels I, II, and III should be included in the surgical procedure.

Summary: Saliva production and secretion are essential functions of the salivary glands, with multiple functions including moistening, digestion, mineralization, lubrication, and mucosal protection. Saliva undergoes dynamic changes in its chemical and physical properties during physiological and pathophysiological processes. The central nervous system regulates salivary secretion and function through various neurotransmitters and neuroreceptors. Salivary glands play a crucial role in innate and adaptive immunity and protection, and saliva contains potential biomarkers for monitoring and predicting health and disease in clinical practice and precision medicine.

Summary: Salivary gland malignancies are rare tumors with diverse histological and biological features. The application of systemic therapy in the treatment of salivary gland malignancies remains challenging, and there is currently no defined treatment advantage. Personalized therapies have been widely accepted, but a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to consider both patient needs and tumor characteristics.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of surgical margins on cancer-specific survival and overall survival in oral cancer patients based on a nationwide cancer registry database. The results showed that surgical margins <4 mm and <5 mm predict poor cancer-specific survival and overall survival, respectively, highlighting the importance of adequate margins in improving prognosis.
