Pancreatic cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease with the etiology largely unknown. The deadly nature of pancreatic cancer, with an extremely low 5-year survival rate, renders urgent a better understanding of the molecular events underlying it. The aim of this study is to investigate the gene expression module of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with prognostic potentials. Transcriptome microarray data of five GEO datasets (GSE15471, GSE16515, GSE18670, GSE32676, GSE71989), including 117 primary tumor samples and 73 normal pancreatic tissue samples, were utilized to identify DEGs. The five sets of DEGs had an overlapping subset consisting of 98 genes (90 up-regulated and 8 down-regulated), which were probably common to pancreatic cancer. Gene ontology (GO) analysis of the 98 DEGs showed that cell cycle and cell adhesion were the major enriched processes, and extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction and p53 signaling pathway were the most enriched pathways according to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis. Elevated expression of gap junction protein beta 2 (GJB2) and reduced endoplasmic reticulum oxidoreductase 1-like beta (ERO1LB) expression were validated in an independent cohort. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that GJB2 and ERO1LB levels were significantly associated with the overall survival of pancreatic cancer patients. GJB2 and ERO1LB are implicated in pancreatic cancer progression and can be used to predict patient survival. Therapeutic strategies targeting GJB2 and facilitating ERO1LB expression may deserve evaluation to improve prognosis of pancreatic cancer patients.

Effect of External Magnetic Field on Bulk Heterojunction Polymer Solar Cells

Dezhen Wu, Lenning Shen, Dong Zhang, Tao Zhu, Jie Zheng, Xiong Gong

Summary: The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure can be enhanced by incorporating Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and an external magnetic field (EMF). The coercive electric field within the Fe3O4 MNPs generated by the EMF facilitates charge generation and accelerates charge carrier transport, leading to an improvement in PCE.

Significantly Enhanced Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Multiferroic EuFeO3-? Thin Films

Hao Li, Yali Yang, Shiqing Deng, Hui Liu, Tianyu Li, Yuzhu Song, He Bai, Tao Zhu, Jiaou Wang, Huanhua Wang, Er-Jia Guo, Xianran Xing, Hongjun Xiang, Jun Chen

Summary: Regulating the magnetic properties of multiferroics enables their potential application in spintronic devices. By utilizing oxygen defect engineering, we significantly enhanced the room temperature ferromagnetism of a representative ferrite, EuFeO3. Our findings suggest that the decrease in Fe-O-Fe bond angles caused by oxygen vacancies strengthens magnetic interactions and tilts Fe spins, leading to an approximately five-fold increase in saturation magnetization. Furthermore, we established the internal relationship between magnetism and oxygen vacancies by illustrating how magnetic structure and magnitude change with varying vacancy configuration and concentration. This strategy for regulating magnetic properties has broad applicability to various functional oxide materials.

Loss of sodium leak channel (NALCN) in the ventral dentate gyrus impairs neuronal activity of the glutamatergic neurons for inflammation-induced depression in male mice

Jinping Wang, Yaoxin Yang, Jin Liu, Jingxuan Qiu, Donghang Zhang, Mengchan Ou, Yi Kang, Tao Zhu, Cheng Zhou

Summary: The expression and function of NALCN in the DG were reduced in LPS-treated mice, and only inactivation of NALCN in the ventral DG produced depressive-like behaviors. These results suggest that the expression of NALCN in ventral DG glutamatergic neurons regulates depressive-like behaviors and susceptibility. Therefore, NALCN in glutamatergic neurons of the ventral DG may serve as a molecular target for rapid antidepressant drugs.

Research progress on perioperative blood-brain barrier damage and its potential mechanism

Yong Qiu, Chunheng Mo, Shiyu Xu, Lu Chen, Wanlin Ye, Yi Kang, Guo Chen, Tao Zhu

Summary: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial barrier that separates the central nervous system from the periphery, consisting of endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, synapses, and tight junction proteins. During the perioperative period, anesthesia and surgical procedures pose stress on the body, leading to potential blood-brain barrier damage and brain metabolism dysfunction. The destruction of the blood-brain barrier during the perioperative period is closely associated with cognitive impairment and increased risk of postoperative mortality, hindering the enhancement of recovery after surgery. The specific pathophysiological processes and mechanisms underlying blood-brain barrier damage during the perioperative period have not been fully elucidated, but changes in blood-brain barrier permeability, inflammation and neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, and intestinal dysbiosis may be involved. This review aims to summarize the research progress on perioperative blood-brain barrier damage, its potential adverse effects, and molecular mechanisms to provide insights for the study of brain function homeostasis and precision anesthesia.

Brominated flame retardants coated separators for high-safety lithium-sulfur batteries

Xinxin Dong, Tao Zhu, Guoqing Liu, Jinxuan Chen, Hongfei Li, Jun Sun, Xiaoyu Gu, Sheng Zhang

Summary: Coating commercial polypropylene separators with three brominated flame retardants greatly improves the flame retardancy of lithium-sulfur batteries and reduces the self-extinguishing time of the electrolyte through radical elimination mechanism. Oxygen-containing flame retardants exhibit a stronger adsorption capacity and are more advantageous in mitigating the shuttle effect and enhancing the cycle and rate performance of the batteries. This simple coating strategy offers a competitive option for large-scale production of high-safety lithium-sulfur batteries.

Summary: Chronic pain is often associated with cognitive decline, and Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) plays a crucial role in memory and learning. This study found that TLR3 levels increased in hippocampal neurons of mice with chronic pain. Furthermore, TLR3 knockout and TLR3-specific neuronal knockdown mice showed improved cognitive function and reduced inflammation and apoptosis. The presence of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), specifically in the sciatic nerve, serum, and hippocampus, activated TLR3, leading to impaired synaptic plasticity and cognitive impairment.

Narrowband all-fiber acousto-optic tunable add-drop filter based on dispersion-compensating fiber

Ligang Huang, Shunli Liu, Bowen Zheng, Yanxiang Zhao, Laiyang Dang, Lei Gao, Wei Huang, Guolu Yin, Tao Zhu

Summary: A narrowband fast tunable acousto-optic add-drop filter is proposed and demonstrated, which is based on the acoustically induced birefringence of dispersion compensating fiber and covers wavelengths from 1510 nm to 1590 nm. Single-wavelength filtering is achieved with a bandwidth of around 5 nm by peak fusion of the nearly degenerated coupling of the vector mode group with an acousto-optic interaction length of smaller than 5 cm. The constructed filter has reconfigurable band-pass and band-rejection filtering characteristics, and offers advantages such as narrow band, fast tuning speed, single wavelength, compact size, simple fabrication, and zero frequency shift. It has potential applications in the fields of tunable lasers, wavelength division multiplexing optical communication, and optical signal processing.
