Src family kinases (SFKs): critical regulators of microglial homeostatic functions and neurodegeneration in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases

Camila C. Portugal, Tiago O. Almeida, Renato Socodato, Joao B. Relvas

Summary: c-Src was the first protein kinase identified as phosphorylating tyrosine residues. Microglia, as the resident innate immune cells of the CNS, play essential roles in brain tissue homeostasis and are affected by SFK stimulation in conditions related to neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

The peptide secreted at the water to land transition in a model amphibian has antioxidant effects

Eder Alves Barbosa, Alexandra Placido, Daniel C. Moreira, Lucas Albuquerque, Anderson Dematei, Amandda E. Silva-Carvalho, Wanessa F. Cabral, Sonia N. Bao, Felipe Saldanha-Araujo, Selma A. S. Kuckelhaus, Tatiana K. Borges, Camila C. Portugal, Renato Socodato, Catia Teixeira, Filipe Camargo D. A. Lima, Augusto Batagin-Neto, Antonio Sebben, Peter Eaton, Paula Gomes, Guilherme D. Brand, Joao B. Relvas, Massuo J. Kato, Jose Roberto S. A. Leite

Summary: Amphibians undergoing metamorphosis experience morphophysiological changes and environmental constraints when transitioning from water to land. Pithecopus azureus secretes a peptide named PaT-2 before terrestrial behavior onset, which belongs to the tryptophyllins family and exhibits antioxidant activity, as confirmed by cell-based assays.

Neuron-Microglia Contact-Dependent Mechanisms Attenuate Methamphetamine-Induced Microglia Reactivity and Enhance Neuronal Plasticity

Joana Bravo, Ines Ribeiro, Ana Filipa Terceiro, Elva B. Andrade, Camila Cabral Portugal, Igor M. Lopes, Maria M. Azevedo, Mafalda Sousa, Catia D. F. Lopes, Andrea C. Lobo, Teresa Canedo, Joao Bettencourt Relvas, Teresa Summavielle

Summary: This study demonstrates the interaction between neurons and glial cells in the activation of microglia in response to methamphetamine. Neurons require astrocyte mediation to activate microglia, and they can partially prevent methamphetamine-induced microglia activation through increased expression of arginase 1 and strengthening of the CD200/CD200r pathway. Contact-dependent mechanisms between neurons and microglia attenuate pro-inflammatory events associated with methamphetamine-induced microglia activation.

Pinch2 regulates myelination in the mouse central nervous system

Joana Paes de Faria, Raquel S. Vale-Silva, Reinhard Fassler, Hauke B. Werner, Joao B. Relvas

Summary: Pinch2 plays a crucial role in central nervous system myelination, preventing excessive myelin wrapping and promoting myelin stability. Loss of Pinch2 results in hypermyelination and pathological myelin outfoldings.

Mechanical actuators in microglia dynamics and function

Pedro Melo, Renato Socodato, Mariana S. Silveira, Miguel Antonio Dias Neves, Joao Bettencourt Relvas, Ines Mendes Pinto

Summary: Microglia, the primary immune cells in the CNS, play a crucial role in maintaining tissue homeostasis by changing their morphology and producing inflammatory mediators. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of actin and myosin II in controlling microglial cell shape.

Maternal stress and vulnerability to depression: coping and maternal care strategies and its consequences on adolescent offspring

Renata L. Alves, Camila C. Portugal, Igor M. Lopes, Pedro Oliveira, Cecilia J. Alves, Fernando Barbosa, Teresa Summavielle, Ana Magalhaes

Summary: Research has revealed that depressive mothers may find it challenging to interact with their children. Maternal stress may worsen mother-child attachment, increasing the likelihood of negative developmental consequences.

Potential of omega-3 and conjugated fatty acids to control microglia inflammatory imbalance elicited by obesogenic nutrients

A. S. Salsinha, R. Socodato, A. Rodrigues, R. Vale-Silva, J. B. Relvas, M. Pintado, L. M. Rodriguez-Alcala

Summary: High-fat diet-induced obesity has negative effects on brain function by causing chronic low-grade inflammation, which is likely mediated by microglia, the primary immune cell population in the brain. Different fatty acids can modulate microglia activity, and fructose and palmitic acid together induce inflammation in human microglia. However, omega-3, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and conjugated linolenic acid (CLNA) have potential neuroprotective and antioxidant effects.

RhoA balances microglial reactivity and survival during neuroinflammation

Renato Socodato, Artur Rodrigues-Santos, Joana Tedim-Moreira, Tiago O. Almeida, Teresa Canedo, Camila C. Portugal, Joao B. Relvas

Summary: Microglia, the largest myeloid cell population in the brain, play a crucial role in regulating the response and survival during inflammation. RhoA activity is essential for microglial metabolic reprogramming and their reaction to inflammation.
