Summary: This study investigated the hepatotoxicity of 2-amino-3-methylimidazole[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ) in zebrafish models and found that IQ exposure led to significant increases in liver enzymes, oxidative stress, and inflammation levels, while decreasing antioxidant levels. The study also revealed the pathological changes in zebrafish liver tissue induced by IQ exposure and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in IQ-induced liver damage.

Summary: Silkworm pupa peptides (SPP) have been shown to protect against DSS-induced colitis in mice by reducing cell apoptosis, attenuating inflammatory responses, and improving oxidative stress levels. These findings provide potential candidates for the development of new drugs for the treatment of colitis.

Summary: Cannabinoids, the active components of cannabis, have palliative effects on cancer patients and may also be helpful in treating certain rare forms of cancer. This study investigated the cytotoxic effect of a cannabinoid mixture (CM) on oral cells. The results showed that CM had high cytotoxicity in oral cancer cells at a concentration higher than 0.1 μg/mL but not in normal gingival cells. Low concentrations of CM increased apoptosis, autophagy, antioxidant levels, mitochondrial stress, and DNA damage in oral cells. Furthermore, CM inhibited major signaling pathways involved in cancer progression and cell migration. These findings suggest that cannabinoids could potentially be beneficial in oral cancer therapy.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a deadly malignancy, with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal adenocarcinoma being the two main types. Tobacco and alcohol use, along with limited intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, contribute to the prevalence of esophageal cancer. A food-based approach can help prevent esophageal cancer by targeting multiple processes in carcinogenesis. Black raspberries and strawberries have been found to be potent inhibitors of esophageal cancer.

Summary: Licorice is a versatile herbal medicine and food, and glabridin (Gla) extracted from licorice root has various health benefits. The research discovered the positive effect of Gla in treating alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in mice and liver cells. Gla alleviated liver injury caused by ethanol, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, and restored antioxidant enzyme activity. Gla also regulated specific molecular pathways involved in ALD. Overall, Gla shows promise as a potential health product or drug for ALD.

Summary: Renalase expression is upregulated in fasting conditions and localized in the crypt. Overexpression of renalase protects intestinal cells from oxidative stress induced by H2O2, suggesting a potential protective role of renalase against oxidative stress. NF-kappa B p65 may play a role in regulating renalase expression in response to oxidative stress in the small intestine.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effects of Penthorum Chinense Pursh extract (PCPE) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced acute liver injury (ALI) in dogs. The results showed that PCPE reduced pathological symptoms and liver tissue lesions, improved serum biochemical indicators, and alleviated inflammatory response and oxidative stress. The study also revealed that the NF-kappa B and MAPK signaling pathways are involved in the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of PCPE treatment.
