Summary: This study in South Korea examined the associations between dietary patterns and obesity-related metabolic disorders in children and adolescents. Three dietary patterns were identified: fast food and soda, white rice and kimchi, and oil and seasoned vegetable. The fast food and soda pattern showed a positive relationship with waist circumference, insulin level, and body mass index, while the other two patterns indicated a preventive effect on those parameters.

Summary: This study examined the associations between smartphone usage duration and content type with dietary risk factors among adolescents. The results showed that prolonged smartphone use was associated with higher prevalence of frequent breakfast skipping, frequent intakes of instant noodles, fast food, and sugar-sweetened beverages, and less frequent intakes of fruits and vegetables. Using smartphones mainly for messenger/e-mail, social networking service (SNS)/forum, and games were associated with less frequent intakes of fruits and vegetables than using smartphones for education/information search. Using smartphones mainly for messenger/e-mail and SNS/forum were also associated with more frequent intake of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Summary: The need for adherence to a healthy and sustainable dietary pattern in the pediatric stage is discussed worldwide. Adherence to these dietary patterns varies widely, with higher adherence associated with lower body fat, waist circumference, blood pressure, and metabolic risk. However, there is limited research on these patterns in children, and further validation and prospective studies are needed.

Summary: This study found that healthier dietary patterns were associated with greater physical fitness among Chinese children and adolescents in Shaanxi Province. Higher intake frequencies of breakfast, eggs, and dairy products were positively correlated with physical fitness levels, while sugared beverage intake was negatively correlated. Increased dairy product intake plays a crucial part in boosting the physical fitness total scores of children and adolescents.

Summary: This study quantified the association between dietary patterns and internalizing symptoms, including depression, in children and adolescents. Findings indicated that healthy dietary patterns were negatively associated with internalizing and depressive symptoms, while unhealthy dietary patterns showed a positive association. Studies using self-report measures tended to have larger effect sizes compared to those using parent-report measures.

Summary: Serum uric acid (SUA) concentrations are generally high in children and adolescents in southeast coastal China, and the relationship between diet and SUA concentrations remains unclear. This study found that a meat-based diet was positively associated with SUA concentrations, while a vegetarian diet reduced the risk of hyperuricemia. Furthermore, the intake of poultry, animal organs, blood, and hypoxanthine showed a significantly positive correlation with SUA concentrations, while vegetable intake showed a significantly negative correlation.

Summary: The study reveals that children with gender dysphoria tend to exhibit high-risk attachment patterns, high rates of unresolved loss/trauma, and commonly experience comorbid psychiatric diagnoses and self-harm. Global level of functioning is impaired, and socioeconomic status, family constellation, and adverse childhood experiences increase the likelihood of high-risk attachment patterns.

Summary: The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize observational studies regarding the association between lifestyle patterns and overweight and obesity in adolescents. A total of 21 articles met the eligibility criteria, and 12 studies were used for synthesizing the results. Overall, cross-sectional studies did not find an association between lifestyle patterns and overweight and obesity, but when stratified by risk of bias, a positive association was identified in cross-sectional studies with moderate risk of bias. A prospective study revealed an increase in BMI associated with mixed and predominantly unhealthy lifestyle patterns.

Summary: Excessive intake of ultra-processed foods (UPF) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. However, the effect of UPF intake on cardiovascular health in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) is unknown. This study aimed to describe UPF intake and evaluate its associations with cardiovascular risk factors and CHD in children and adolescents. The findings suggest that UPF intake should be considered as a modifiable risk factor for obesity and cardiovascular consequences in this population.

Summary: Skipping breakfast is common among school-age children and can be explained as a reflection of their independent behavior. This study found that 85% of schoolchildren reported having breakfast, and breakfast consumption was associated with overall dietary patterns. The findings emphasize the importance of providing healthy breakfast options at schools for students who do not have breakfast at home, contributing to health promotion.

Summary: This study investigated how Brazilian schoolchildren categorized and labeled foods and beverages. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 133 schoolchildren aged 7 to 10 years old using a set of cards with pictures of 32 food and beverage items. The children formed groups based on similarity and assigned labels to these groups. The most common labeling method was taxonomic-professional, which could be utilized to improve the identification process in self-reported dietary questionnaires.

Summary: This clinical trial evaluated the absorption and excretion of bioactive compounds in jucara juice and its antioxidant capacity in human serum. The study found that several phenolic acids and conjugated phenolic acids were excreted in urine, and jucara juice decreased the total oxidant status of serum. These findings suggest a relationship between the production of metabolites and the antioxidant capacity of jucara juice.
