Summary: This study experimentally investigated and optimized the extraction of chitin from crab shells to obtain chitosan with a predefined deacetylation degree and molecular mass. By varying four parameters, including NaOH concentration, temperature, HCl concentration, and number of acidic treatments, the optimum operating conditions were determined. The results showed that a high deacetylation degree of chitosan can be achieved with 5% NaOH concentration and low temperatures, while high molecular mass chitosan can be obtained with a single step acidic treatment.

Summary: The rheology of a gel system composed of polyacrylamide (PAM) and chitosan under typical reservoir conditions was investigated. The effects of chitosan deacetylation, temperature, and salinity on gelation behavior were studied. The results showed that the chitosan/PAM system exhibited good rheological behavior and could be a potential green plugging agent in high-temperature oil and gas wells.

Summary: Sustainable chitin nanofiber (ChNF) coatings were developed to extend the shelf life of fresh cucumbers and delay the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial properties of ChNFs were imparted by converting acetamido groups to amino groups through longer deacetylation reaction times. The fibril-like structure of 120 and 240-min deacetylated ChNFs significantly reduced moisture loss and bacterial growth on the cucumbers' surfaces.

Summary: This paper explores the potential of using chitin and cellulose nanomaterials to create multilayer materials with effective oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. Short chitin nanowhiskers and cellulose nanocrystals demonstrate better performance, and the addition of chitosan improves the gas barrier properties. The coatings can be efficiently removed with alkali treatment, enabling recycling of the coated films.

Summary: In this study, chitin and chitosan were used to provide an environment for calcium ion and phosphate ion, promoting the formation of HA crystallites. This hypothesis was supported by experiments, and the porous morphology after HA mineralization was observed. CH-CS-HA showed a high crystallinity index and a Young's modulus close to that of native bone.

Summary: In this study, a novel fluorescence carbon dots was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal approach, which exhibited good fluorescence response to Cr (VI) and could be used for quantitative detection of Cr (VI) in water. The results showed that this fluorescence carbon dots had a broad linear range and a low detection limit, indicating its great potential for portable, low-cost, and green detection of Cr (VI) in practical application.

Summary: The basidiomycete Ustilago maydis, a biotrophic fungus, possesses a family of chitin deacetylases (CDAs) with seven genes that play discrete and redundant roles in virulence and cell wall integrity. The study shows that different CDAs have specific functions in evading plant immune recognition and modifying chitin to chitosan. Surprisingly, the simultaneous inactivation of all seven genes is not tolerated, indicating the essential role of chitosan for the fungus's viability.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of chitosan with different molecular weights on the biomolecule profile of cell walls and membranes in Eruca vesicaria ssp. sativa leaves using FT-IR spectroscopy. The results showed that the molecular weight and concentration of chitosan influenced membrane instability, lipid peroxidation, and lignin production. Among the treatments, the 10 kDa chitosan at 5 mg L-1 was found to be the most effective.

Summary: Chitin and its derivative chitosan are widely used polysaccharides in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Commercially available chitin is mainly sourced from seafood wastes, but there is a growing interest in alternative renewable sources like insects. This study compared the physicochemical properties of chitin extracted from cicada sloughs harvested in different years to assess source stability and extraction process repeatability. Results showed variations in the properties of extracted chitin across years, indicating intrinsic differences within the source.
