Summary: A recent study investigated the adhesion between an elastic body and a smooth, rigid substrate, and found that the surface roughness suppresses adhesion. Simulations revealed that the pull-off force is influenced by different contact patches, resulting in up to four different regimes of adhesion. The study highlights the importance of considering both local and global parameters in understanding adhesion between materials.

Summary: The Mediterranean diet, characterized by olive oil consumption, has been extensively studied for its potential health benefits. Recent clinical evidence supports the positive impact of olive oil intake on human health, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, improvement in endothelial function and lipid profile, prevention of non-communicable diseases, and modulation of the gut microbiota.

Summary: The impact of contrast polarity on retinal activity and its interactions with eccentricity and refractive error were explored in this study. Myopic individuals showed larger retinal responses to a dead leaves stimulus with standard and inverted contrast when the perifovea was stimulated, but smaller amplitudes for inverted contrast when the fovea was included compared to emmetropic individuals. Emmetropic individuals had higher sensitivity to inverted contrast within 12 degrees but were most sensitive to gray in the perifovea.

Summary: Environmental factors and social conflicts refocus attention on palm oil which is often associated with deforestation and biodiversity loss. Poorly managed cultivation can have severe ecological effects, but as the highest yielding vegetable oil, discussions around palm oil are complicated. Providing information can influence understanding of issues such as indirect land use change, but it may be insufficient to encourage deeper thinking about the complexity of sustainability dimensions compared to more easily understood aspects.

Summary: Trillions of symbiotic microbial cells colonize our body, with a larger portion residing in the human gut. Changes in gut microbiota have been linked to various diseases, including neurological disorders. Helicobacter species, particularly H. suis, may play a role in neurological disorders via the microbiome-gut-brain axis, but further research is needed to understand their impact on the brain.

Summary: A native enzyme's normal recognition of physiological substrates can be disrupted by small molecule antagonists, resulting in the production of abnormal products. This mode of enzyme antagonism, known as paracatalytic induction, leads to new or enhanced activity of enzymes towards aberrant transformations. Enzyme/paracatalytic inducer complexes may either transform native substrates into chemically distinct products or preferentially interact with and transform molecules outside the scope of physiological substrates. Paracatalytic inducers can have cytotoxic effects or redirect enzyme activity towards adaptive and therapeutic transformations. We highlight two noteworthy examples of paracatalytic induction from recent literature.

Summary: The study evaluated the agreement of different biometric parameters obtained using intraoperative spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and two swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) based biometers. Results showed that SS-OCT biometers demonstrated good agreement for anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW) and lens thickness (LT), while SD-OCT showed discrepancies in ACD, CCT, and WTW values compared to SS-OCT biometers, but excellent agreement in LT measurements.
