The authors present the contemporary state of knowledge concerning alternative materials for dental implantology. First of all, factors influencing osseointegration are stated. The most important factors seem to be the type of implant surface. Among the numerous parameters describing them, the most important are: average roughness and porous density. Some studies proved that materials with comparable surface roughness provide similar osseointegration. In modern implantology titanium is the material still considered as a gold standard. However, aesthetic features of titanium still bear several disadvantages, especially in the case of periodontium with a thin biotype in the anterior, aesthetic sensitive area of the jaw. If a titanium implant is used in such a case, the mucosa at the implant's neck may become grayish and, consequently limits the success of the overall treatment. That was the reason for seeking alternative materials to manufacture dental implants. Initiated by general medicine, mainly orthopedics, the search led to the discovery of zirconium dioxide used in dental implantology. A small number of complications, good chemical parameters, anticorrosion, mechanical strength, elasticity module close to the one of steel, and especially biocompatibility made zirconium a perfect material for this purpose, although this material presents several problems in achieving optimal roughness. In this overview one of the probable methods, a process of partial synterization, is presented.

Impact of APRF plus in Combination with Autogenous Fibroblasts on Release Growth Factors, Collagen, and Proliferation and Migration of Gingival Fibroblasts: An In Vitro Study

Barbara Sterczala, Agnieszka Chwilkowska, Urszula Szwedowicz, Magdalena Kobielarz, Bartlomiej Chwilkowski, Marzena Dominiak

Summary: This study compared the effects of using A-PRF+ alone and A-PRF+ combined with autologous gingival fibroblasts. The results showed that the combination of A-PRF+ and fibroblasts had higher values of VEGF and TGF beta 2 released, and significantly increased fibroblast proliferation after 72 hours. In terms of wound healing, the factors released from A-RRF+ alone and the factors released from A-RRF+ combined with fibroblasts showed significantly better results.

Fractal Dimension and Texture Analysis in the Assessment of Experimental Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) Dental Implant Surface-In Vitro Study Preliminary Report

Jakub Hadzik, Pawel Kubasiewicz-Ross, Wojciech Simka, Tomasz Gebarowski, Ewa Barg, Aneta Ciesla-Niechwiadowicz, Anna Trzcionka Szajna, Ernest Szajna, Tomasz Gedrange, Marcin Kozakiewicz, Marzena Dominiak, Kamil Jurczyszyn

Summary: This study evaluated the experimental LIPSS-based LSFL dental implant surfaces by comparing their physical properties using methods such as fractal dimension analysis and texture analysis. The results showed that laser-induced periodic surface structure modifications significantly enhanced cell adhesion and growth on the tested surfaces. Texture and fractal dimension analyses are promising methods for evaluating dental implants with complex geometry.

Role of implant loading time in the prevention of marginal bone loss after implant-supported restorations: A targeted review

Maciej Krawiec, Cyprian Olchowy, Pawe Kubasiewicz-Ross, Jakub Hadzik, Marzena Dominiak

Summary: The implant-supported restoration of missing teeth is a widely accepted treatment method that provides satisfactory functional, esthetic, and durable effects. The ideal time for dental implant loading is still debated, with three protocols commonly used: immediate loading, early loading, and conventional (late) loading. This review summarizes the evidence on the impact of loading time on marginal bone loss (MBL) around dental implants and finds no significant differences in MBL between immediate/early loaded implants and conventionally loaded ones.

Botox Therapy for Hypertrophy of the Masseter Muscle Causes a Compensatory Increase of Stiffness of Other Muscles of Masticatory Apparatus

Dorota Mierzwa, Cyprian Olchowy, Anna Olchowy, Izabela Nawrot-Hadzik, Pawel Dabrowski, Slawomir Chobotow, Kinga Grzech-Lesniak, Pawel Kubasiewicz-Ross, Marzena Dominiak

Summary: This study investigates the changes in stiffness of the masseter muscle and the temporalis muscle after botox injections in patients with masseter muscle hypertrophy. The results show that botox injections decrease the stiffness of the masseter muscle, while increasing the stiffness of the temporalis muscle. Simultaneous evaluation and treatment of the temporalis muscle may be necessary to ensure the desired functional and cosmetic effect.

Laterally Positioned Flap Procedure with Augmented or Nonaugmented Palatal Connective Tissue Grafts in the Treatment of Multiple Adjacent Gingival Recessions: A Two-Year Follow-Up Study

Wojciech Bednarz, Jennifer Majer, Justyna Pakuszynska-Blaszczyk, Marzena Dominiak, Tomasz Gedrange, Agata Zielinska-Palasz

Summary: This study compared the gingival thickness after gingival recession coverage using the laterally positioned flap supported by an augmented and non-augmented connective tissue graft. The results showed that the laterally positioned flap with augmented connective tissue graft is an effective alternative method for covering gingival recessions, resulting in improved coverage rate and gingival thickness.
