Aim: The increasing use of cocaine (COC) during breastfeeding has led to growing concern about exposure of infants. Therefore, to study this exposure, a new method to analyze COC and benzoylecgonine in breast milk was developed. Methodology: A new extraction method was used for the first time to analyze COC and its major metabolite, benzoylecgonine, in breast milk using magnetic carbon nanotubes partially doped with nitrogen. Results: The calibration curves were linear in the range 5.0-180.0 ng ml(-1). The limit of quantification was 5.0 ng ml(-1). Coefficients of variation were between 3.2 and 13.9%. Recovery was between 89.6 and 99.2%. Conclusion: The proposed method is simple, efficient and suitable to determine analytes in breast milk.

Cancer risk assessment and source apportionment of the gas- and particulate-phase of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a metropolitan region in Brazil

Elson Silva Galvao, Henrique Bittencourt Paiva, Helvecio Costa Menezes, Taciana Toledo de Almeida Albuquerque, Zenilda de Lourdes Cardeal

Summary: A risk assessment and source apportionment of PAHs in a highly trafficked and industrialized region in southeastern Brazil revealed higher concentrations of PAHs during the summer due to fire outbreaks. The study identified four potential sources through isomer ratio diagnostic and PCA, which were confirmed and apportioned using the PMF model as gasoline-related (31.8%), diesel-related (25.1%), biomass burning (23.4%), and mixed sources (19.6%). The overall cancer risk was tolerable, with ingestion being the major exposure route. Mixed sources contributed the most to the cancer risk, followed by gasoline-related, diesel-related, and biomass burning sources. Higher risks were associated with PM2.5-bound PAHs exposure, highlighting the need for mitigation measures.

Synergy Between Supported Metal Single Atoms and Nanoparticles and their Relevance in Catalysis

Philippe Serp

Summary: Catalytic active sites composed of isolated metal single atoms are present in enzymatic, homogeneous, and heterogeneous catalysts. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) in heterogeneous catalysis have the potential to exhibit high reactivity and selectivity, provided that their local coordination environment and electronic properties are properly tuned. These sites possess distinctive properties compared to metal nanoparticles or clusters. Despite the challenges in achieving catalysts with high homogeneity of active sites in supported catalysis, a growing body of research has shown the potential synergy between these two species to enhance catalytic performance. This mini-review discusses the different types of synergies, as well as the challenges and opportunities for these catalysts in thermal, electro, and photo-catalysis.

Adjustment of the Single Atom/Nanoparticle Ratio in Pd/CNT Catalysts for Phenylacetylene Selective Hydrogenation

Jeremy Audevard, Javier Navarro-Ruiz, Vincent Bernardin, Yann Tison, Anna Corrias, Iker Del Rosal, Alain Favre-Reguillon, Regis Philippe, Iann C. Gerber, Philippe Serp

Summary: Pd/C catalysts are widely used in hydrogenation reactions, with Pd nanoparticles promoting H-spillover. However, in selective hydrogenation, unpromoted Pd/C catalysts are not effective. Pd single atom catalysts, although selective, have low activity. By utilizing a cooperative catalysis between Pd nanoparticles and Pd single atoms, high selectivity and activity can be achieved.

Evaluation of amino acid profile by targeted metabolomics in the eukaryotic model under exposure of benzo[a]pyrene as the exclusive stressor

Josimar M. Batista, Maria J. Neves, Helvecio C. Menezes, Zenilda L. Cardeal

Summary: A new amino acid extraction method using functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes was developed and optimized, which showed excellent extraction of analytes. Exposure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to BaP at a concentration of 25.0 μmol L-1 caused changes in cell viability, indicating metabolic alterations. A fast and efficient GC/MS method was optimized to determine 16 amino acids in yeasts exposed or not to BaP. Comparison of amino acid concentrations revealed statistically significant differences in glycine, serine, phenylalanine, proline, asparagine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, tyrosine, and leucine, suggesting their potential as toxicity biomarker candidates.

Cocktail-type catalysis on bimetallic systems for cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation: Role of isolated single atoms, nanoparticles and single atom alloys

Jeremy Audevard, Javier Navarro-Ruiz, Vincent Bernardin, Regis Philippe, Anna Corrias, Yann Tison, Alain Favre-Reguillon, Iker Del Rosal, Iann C. Gerber, Philippe Serp

Summary: Achieving high selectivity, conversion, and rate in the industrially important selective hydrogenation of a,b-unsaturated aldehydes is challenging. Previous approaches have sacrificed activity for selectivity towards unsaturated alcohol or saturated aldehyde. However, this study demonstrates that combining Ni nanoparticles (NiNP) and Ru single atoms (RuSA) on CNTs allows for improved hydrocinnamaldehyde selectivity without compromising activity. The resulting catalyst shows 94% selectivity at 99% conversion and has good stability in continuous flow conditions. Insights into the cooperative catalysis mechanism between NiNP and RuSA were obtained through density functional theory calculations.
