Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify key factors associated with severe stress in families raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: Questionnaires were mailed to families with one or more children with a diagnosis of ASD. Data from 543 surveys were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Forty-four percent (n = 241) of the caregivers reported severe family stress related to raising a child with ASD. Severe family stress was associated with (1) reduced ability to socialize; (2) not having accessed individual therapy; (3) negative co-parent relationships; and (4) high out of pockets costs due to the child's ASD. The specific ASD diagnosis, comorbid conditions, socio-demographic variables, and social support were not associated with severe family stress. Conclusion: The findings of the current study highlight the importance of a systemic approach to family stress, whereby individual, family, and ecological factors are investigated.

Melissa H. Black, Melissa Scott, Elliot Baker-Young, Craig Thompson, Sarah McGarry, Maya Hayden-Evans, Zelma Snyman, Frank Zimmermann, Viktor Kacic, Torbjorn Falkmer, Marcel Romanos, Sven Boelte, Sonya Girdler, Benjamin Milbourn

Summary: Suicide among post-secondary students is a significant public health concern. While there have been studies on suicide prevention programs, the effective elements of these interventions are still unknown. This study reviewed the literature and identified potential effective elements of suicide prevention programs for post-secondary students. Gatekeeper training programs were found to be the most common type of intervention. These programs have the potential to improve students' engagement with mental health services, knowledge, help-seeking attitudes and behaviors, and gatekeeper-related outcomes.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the responsiveness of all current parent- or caregiver-reported measures of child maltreatment. The study found that only the Physical Abuse subscale of the ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tool for use in Trials (ICAST-Trial) was highly responsive and can be recommended for use in parenting interventions.

Reliability and Validity of Non-Instrumental Clinical Assessments for Adults with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Systematic Review

Reinie Cordier, Renee Speyer, Matthew Martinez, Lauren Parsons

Summary: This systematic review examines non-instrumental clinical assessment measures for adult oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) and evaluates their reliability and validity. A total of 16 measures and 32 psychometric studies were included, focusing on swallowing assessments in English-speaking adults. The results indicate incomplete data on the reliability and validity of the included measures, highlighting the need for future research using contemporary psychometric methods to develop comprehensive non-instrumental clinical assessments for adults with OD.

'Exploring the perspectives of young adults with developmental disabilities about sexuality and sexual health education'

Daina Coulter, Claire Lynch, Annette V. Joosten

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of young adults with developmental disabilities regarding their sexuality, societal attitudes, and access to sexual health education. The results showed that sexuality was important to them, but their autonomy was constrained by societal attitudes. They suggested that there is a need to change societal attitudes towards disability and sexuality, and to provide individualized sexual health education by professionals.

Standardized Measures Used Regularly by Speech-Language Pathologists' when assessing the Language Abilities of School-Aged Children: A Survey

Deborah Denman, Reinie Cordier, Natalie Munro, Jae-Hyun Kim, Renee Speyer

Summary: This study investigated the use of standardized language measures by speech language pathologists when assessing school-aged children. The results showed that although many standardized measures were used, only a few were used regularly. The study also found that these measures were often used to assess domains they were not specifically designed for, and for purposes they were not ideally suited to. It concludes that speech language pathologists need to focus more on evidence-based practice when selecting standardized measures for school-aged children.

Development of a Visuoperceptual Measure for Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (V-FEES) in Adults with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: An International Delphi Study

Reinie Cordier, Renee Speyer, Susan Langmore, Deborah Denman, Katina Swan, Daniele Farneti

Summary: There is currently no international consensus on the visuoperceptual measures to use for analyzing fiberoptic endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES) recordings. This study aimed to establish the content validity of a new visuoperceptual measure for FEES. Through the Delphi technique, international consensus was achieved among dysphagia experts, resulting in a prototype measure comprising 30 items, 8 function testing items, and 36 unique operationalizations.

The Long Shadow of Intimate Partner Violence: Associations of Mental and Physical Health With Employment, Housing, and Demographic Factors

Reinie Cordier, Yu-Wei Chen, Donna Chung, Natasha Mahoney, Robyn Martin, Kate Dorozenko, Suzanne Franzway, Nicole Moulding, Sarah Wendt, Carole Zufferey

Summary: This study identified the associations between health issues and various factors such as demographics, housing, employment, and social participation for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Physical health problems were found to be related to decreased employment skills and confidence, while mental health issues were associated with unemployment and lower incomes. Screening for health impacts and providing long-term support could help alleviate the prolonged effects of IPV.

The impact of coping behaviors on perceived competence and social anxiety in the everyday social engagement of autistic adolescents

Yu-Wei Ryan Chen, Daphne Yih Ng, Mei-Hui Tseng, Anita Bundy, Reinie Cordier

Summary: This study examined how well autistic adolescents coped with social situations and found that they were more likely to experience social anxiety when engaged in activities with adults. The ability to cope with oneself was positively associated with perceived social competence but negatively associated with coping with environmental challenges. Autistic adolescents who had difficulty coping with challenges were more likely to feel socially anxious during leisure activities with peers. These findings can help improve the social experiences of autistic adolescents by enhancing their coping skills.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the characteristics and measurement properties of functional numeracy measures used by teachers among 9-12-year-old children with or without mathematical learning difficulties. A systematic search from five databases was conducted based on pre-defined criteria, and PRISMA guidelines were followed. Most of the identified measures did not report on several measurement properties, and further validation is needed for all the included measures.
