Summary: Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PwIDD) are at high risk of experiencing adverse effects (AEs) while receiving healthcare assistance due to their high social and clinical vulnerability. Healthcare practitioners need to be aware of these results and take them into consideration in order to provide personalized, preventive, competent, effective, and safe medical care.

Summary: The study reviewed evidence on detecting and preventing abuse in care services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, summarizing characteristics of victims, perpetrators, and organizations, as well as recommending better staff training, supervision, and service monitoring for abuse prevention. However, the quality of studies limits the reliability and validity of research findings, indicating a need for further research to support the implementation of abuse detection and prevention recommendations.

Summary: “Children with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, require multiple service systems and interactions with various professionals. Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) programs provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary training to address the growing demand for qualified pediatric providers. This study reports the positive impact of LEND programs on trainees' knowledge, skills, and attitudes in key competency domains, validating the effectiveness of a national quality improvement approach in evaluating interdisciplinary training.”

Summary: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and adaptations in service delivery, the utilization of healthcare services among individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) differed from those without IDD. The study found that the proportion of adults using healthcare services decreased during the first year of the pandemic, except for virtual physician visits. However, individuals with IDD were more likely to use mental health emergency visits and hospitalizations compared to those without IDD.

Summary: Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience poorer reproductive and pregnancy outcomes due to health care inequity. They have lower fertility rates, less access to sexual education, and receive prenatal care later and less frequently compared to their peers. The gaps in understanding this issue hinder efforts to reduce health disparities for these women.
