Summary: Aging negatively affects the endothelium. Endocan (ESM-1), an endothelium-derived soluble proteoglycan, plays a role in endothelial dysfunction and age-related outcomes in critical illness. ESM-1 levels were measured in different groups of critically ill patients, and it was found that COVID-19 patients had higher ESM-1 levels compared to septic and non-septic patients. The prognostic ability of ESM-1 was influenced by age and the extent of endothelial dysfunction.

Summary: Conflicting results have been found in the literature regarding the association between serum lipid levels and prostate cancer. This study found lower LDL and total cholesterol levels in patients with prostate cancer at diagnosis, with no significant differences between risk groups. Low LDL cholesterol and low total cholesterol serum levels seem to be associated with prostate cancer at diagnosis.

Summary: This study found that serum endocan levels were significantly higher in pregnant women with gestational diabetes compared to healthy controls. Serum endocan levels were positively correlated with the results of glucose tolerance tests. These findings suggest that serum endocan levels may be important for the pathophysiology of gestational diabetes and could potentially serve as a novel marker.

Summary: This article summarizes the applications of endocan in cancer diagnoses and prognoses, and discusses the aberrant molecular characteristics of endocan in cancer cells may be due to mislocalization. Defining the specific cellular roles of endocan will provide a promising diagnostic factor and therapeutic target for cancer patients.

Summary: This study investigated the differential levels of inflammatory chemokines in association with higher prostate cancer incidence and mortality in African American men. The results showed that African American men had significantly higher levels of CXCL2 and CXCL5, and lower levels of CCL23. CXCL5 was highly expressed in prostate tumor tissues, while CCL23 was mostly undetectable.

Summary: This study examined the levels of serum endocan, CRP, and NLR in RRMS patients in remission and in relapse, finding that they were significantly higher in the relapse group compared to the remission group and control group. There were no significant correlations between these levels and disease duration, EDSS score, relapse frequency, and lesion burden. However, strong positive relationships were found between MRI lesion localization and EDSS score, disease duration, and relapse frequency.

Summary: This study suggests that serum testosterone levels may serve as a prognostic marker for cabazitaxel therapy in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who are younger than 70 years old. Higher serum testosterone levels were associated with longer overall survival (OS).

Summary: This study assessed the relationship between the level of food processing and prostate cancer severity. It found that individuals who consumed more unprocessed/minimally processed foods were less likely to have greater prostate cancer severity, while a borderline association was found between higher consumption of ultra-processed foods and greater prostate cancer severity. However, these associations were not significant after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

Summary: Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death in men in the United States. The commonly used method of diagnosis involves digital rectal examination and serum PSA assay, followed by prostate gland biopsy. However, false elevations in PSA levels can lead to unnecessary biopsies. This study evaluated the use of urinary PSA as a predictive marker for aggressive prostate cancer, and found that it had higher predictive power compared to serum PSA. Combining serum and urinary PSA levels further enhanced the detection of aggressive prostate cancer.

Summary: Circulating miR-940 is significantly higher in serum from prostate cancer patients, especially those with clinically significant tumors (GS >= 7). Combining miR-940 with PSA improves the diagnostic accuracy of prostate cancer.

Summary: This case report presented a pediatric sertoliform cystadenoma of rete testis, which was treated with a testis-sparing approach for the first time. The tumor resection was successful without any complications, and the diagnosis was a benign extratesticular mass. Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score for the prognosis of prostate cancer. The results showed a strong correlation between CONUT score and patients' clinical and pathological features as well as prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and a moderate negative correlation between CONUT score and PSA-recurrence free survival (PSA-RFS). Multivariate analysis revealed that a CONUT score >= 2 was significantly associated with International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) upgrading and biochemical recurrence (BCR).
