Summary: Well differentiated thyroid cancer is a common malignancy diagnosed in young patients, with excellent prognosis and long-term survivorship expected. Treatment decisions should take into account the long-term quality of life outcomes and the implications for treating slow growing tumors. Surgery is the standard of care, but active surveillance and novel remote access approaches may be appropriate for some patients.

Summary: This study compared patient-reported outcomes in thyroid cancer survivors who underwent total thyroidectomy (TT) and lobectomy (LT), showing that patients in the LT group had lower belief in the necessity of medication and less concerns about taking medicines. This suggests that clinicians should consider lobectomy as a surgical option for low-risk, differentiated thyroid cancer patients.

Summary: This study compared the recovery and morbidity of patients undergoing robot-assisted radical cystectomy with intracorporeal reconstruction versus open radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. The results showed that robot-assisted surgery resulted in a statistically significant increase in the number of days alive and out of the hospital within 90 days of surgery. In addition, robot-assisted surgery had lower rates of thromboembolic and wound complications compared to open surgery. Patients who underwent robot-assisted surgery also reported better quality of life and less disability compared to those who underwent open surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to compare longitudinal patient-reported outcomes between breast cancer patients undergoing lumpectomy and mastectomy, finding that mastectomy patients experienced significantly greater decreases in breast satisfaction, psychosocial well-being, and sexual well-being over time compared with lumpectomy patients, with lumpectomy patients more likely to return to baseline scores at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Understanding these differences can inform early intervention strategies to prevent long-term morbidities.

Summary: This study explored the effect of strabismus surgery on the quality of life of strabismus patients with quiescent TAO. The results showed that strabismus surgery significantly improved visual function and psychosocial function of the patients. The greater the preoperative angle of misalignment of the eyes, the worse the psychosocial function. Therefore, strabismus surgery is of great importance for the quality of life of TAO patients.

Summary: Counseling before thyroid cancer treatment is crucial for informed consent and can significantly affect patient-reported quality of life outcomes. A survey study found that a substantial proportion of survivors of thyroid cancer reported inadequate understanding of their treatment plan, which was associated with high levels of self-reported treatment failure to meet expectations. Addressing gaps in patient understanding can improve treatment outcomes and align expectations with the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.

Summary: A clinical analytical framework was developed to explore the impact of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) on quality of life (QoL). The study found that QoL was impacted by DTC, but the impact was modest and influenced by time since diagnosis and treatment. The measurement properties of currently available TC specific QoL PRO instruments are limited and further research is needed.

Summary: Primary cilia play important roles in normal thyroid function, while their loss is commonly observed in thyroid cancers. Restoring primary cilia on thyroid cancer cells could be a promising therapeutic strategy, and the therapeutic response and prognosis of thyroid cancer are closely associated with the presence or absence of primary cilia.

Summary: The integration of cross-stitching with suturing can improve suturing skills in medical students. In a randomized controlled trial comparing an art-based cross-stitching method with conventional suturing, the intervention group showed significant improvement in both self-assessment and objective suturing performance. The skills acquired by the intervention group were retained at the 2-week follow-up, suggesting the potential effectiveness of this low-cost approach in medical student surgical education.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency and factors associated with the incidence of persistent post-transplant hyperparathyroidism (PTHP) following renal transplantation (RT). The results showed that higher pre-RT calcium and PTH levels, as well as pre-RT calcimimetic therapy, were risk factors for PTHP. Further research is needed to determine the optimal PTH cutoff for transplant candidacy and the recommendation for parathyroidectomy in SHP patients requiring calcimimetic therapy.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules and found that the implementation of the Afirma Gene Expression Classifier (GEC) did not affect surgical or malignancy rates, while the Genomic Sequencing Classifier (GSC) resulted in significantly lower surgical rates and higher malignancy rates. Factors associated with the decision to undergo molecular testing were identified, providing insights into the real-world use of molecular markers in indeterminate thyroid nodules.
