Summary: This study aimed to identify self-reported supportive care needs assessment instruments for family caregivers of palliative cancer patients and assess their contents, psychometric properties, and applicability. Four self-reported needs assessment instruments were identified, with significant differences in contents, constructs, scoring methods, and applicability. Major shortcomings included lack of longitudinal validity, strategy for interpreting missing data, and description of literacy level required, indicating a need for further evaluation or development of needs assessment instruments.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the supportive care needs of family caregivers of advanced cancer patients at different stages of care. The findings suggest that a high number of important needs exist among caregivers, with education level, satisfaction with care, and social support influencing the satisfaction of these needs. However, only a small subgroup of caregivers actually utilized support services, indicating a potential need for better information and tailored services to improve their situations in the future.

Summary: This study examined the palliative care needs of advanced cancer patients and their caregivers in China. The results showed that patients mainly had unmet needs in financial, informational, physical (pain), and psychological domains, while caregivers commonly reported unmet needs related to healthcare staff, information, and hospital facilities. Factors such as symptom distress, anxiety and depression, coping strategies, and caregiver quality of life were identified as key predictors of the needs of both patients and caregivers.

Summary: Early palliative care is a successful model of care for advanced cancer patients and their caregivers, but it is often limited to the last weeks of life due to the stigma associated with palliative care. This study aimed to investigate the perception of palliative care among a sample of patients and caregivers before their referral to early palliative care. The results indicate the need for interventions to overcome the stigma and improve understanding of the essence of anticipated palliative care.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between supportive care needs (SCNs), satisfaction with quality of life (QoL) dimensions, and the perceived importance of these dimensions among 152 cancer patients receiving palliative care. The results showed that the greatest SCNs were observed for absence of pain, while the patients were least satisfied with their physical functioning and the dimension social relationships received the highest perceived importance ratings.

Summary: The study found that illness representations among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers are significantly associated with their cancer worry and depressive symptoms, with women perceiving severe consequences and having more concerns more likely to report cancer worry. Perceiving information about the mutation as less coherent and experiencing negative emotional responses were both associated with more depressive symptoms. Women with a previous cancer diagnosis show patterns of illness representations that are potentially more distressing compared to women without a cancer diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a gender score that can be used to separate the effects of gender versus biological sex in a sample of older adults. The gender score was constructed using logistic regression and used as an adjustment and matching variable. Results showed that female sex was independently associated with lower grip strength, better cognitive performance, higher pulse wave velocity, lower body mass index, and lower rates of metabolic syndrome. Both sex and gender were also independently associated with cognitive performance and depression.

Summary: Many physicians struggle to interpret test results using Bayes' rule. Two effective interventions, boosting insight and boosting agency, have been identified. Boosting insight involves presenting test statistics in natural frequencies, while boosting agency involves training on how to translate probabilities into natural frequencies and apply them in Bayes' rule. It is unclear whether boosting agency alone is sufficient or if natural frequencies can additionally enhance insight for accurate test interpretation.
