Congener profiles, distribution and sources of parent and alkyl-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of Southern Yellow Sea (SYS), China were investigated. The ecological risk of parent-PAHs to aquatic organisms were evaluated based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), risk quotient (RQ), organic carbon (OC) normalized analysis and mean effects range-median quotient (M-ERM-Q). The concentrations of 33 PAHs were analyzed, including 14 parent PAHs (without naphthalene and acenaphthylene), 16 alkyl-PAHs (7 methylphenanthrenes, 3 methylanthracenes, 3 methylfluoranthenes, and 3 methylpyrenes), dibenzothiophene, retene and perylene. Total concentrations of PAHs (TPAHs) ranged from 200.8 to 3629.0 ng/g dry weight (d.w.), with a mean value of 1035.4 ng/g d.w., and mainly contributed by fluorene, phenanthrene, methylphenanthrene, retene, fluoranthene and pyrene. Analysis of a broad variety of diagnostic ratios suggested that combustion was the key source of PAHs. Principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) indicated that combustion of coal, softwood and nature gas, coke oven, petroleum and vehicle emission were the main sources of PAHs in sediments of SYS, contributing 41.5%, 30.6%, 18.8%, and 9.0% to TPAHs, respectively. Ecological risk assessment of individual parent-PAHs suggested that fluorene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene may cause some risk to aquatic organisms in some stations. OC-normalized analysis and M-ERM-Q indicated that risk of multiple parent-PAHs was quite low in the studied area. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Temperature and oxygen state of kimberlite magma from the North China Craton and their implication for diamond survival

Ren-zhi Zhu, Pei Ni, Guo-guang Wang, Jun-ying Ding, Ning Kang

Summary: The study found that the grade of kimberlite-hosted diamonds is influenced by the crystallization temperature and oxygen fugacity, with a significant negative correlation between oxygen fugacity and diamond grade, while no relationship was found between crystallization temperature and diamond grade. Crystallization temperatures and oxygen fugacities within individual kimberlite pipes show small variations, while different kimberlite pipes exhibit significant changes in these parameters.

Magmatic controls on the mineralization potential of a porphyry Cu system: The case of Jurassic Tongshan skarn Cu deposit in the Qin-Hang Belt, South China

Xin Zhang, Pei Ni, Guoguang Wang, Dingsheng Jiang, Renzhi Zhu, Yaohui Jiang, Fangyue Wang

Summary: The Qin-Hang suture belt in South China formed during the Neoproterozoic amalgamation between the Cathaysia and Yangtze blocks. Distribution and environmental risk assessment of microplastics in continental shelf sediments in the southern East China Sea: A high-spatial-resolution survey

Zhaozhao Li, Yandong Liu, Dahai Zhang, Lijuan Feng, Xingliang He, Xiaoyong Duan, Xianguo Li, Huixiang Xie

Summary: This study provides a high-spatial-resolution analysis on the distributions, characteristics, and environmental risks of microplastics in the southern East China Sea. The results show that microplastics are commonly found in surface sediments, with higher concentrations near urban centers. The dominant types of microplastics are polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, mainly in the form of fibers and fragments, and have a size of 0.1-0.5 mm. The study highlights the complex interactions among physical, biological, and topographic factors that control the distribution and environmental risks of microplastics in coastal sediments.

Catalytic Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Algae for Production of Bio-oil with Solid Superacid Catalyst SO42-/ZrO2

Liu Mengfan, Yu Xin, Yu Xiaofan, Zhao Yongnian, Feng Lijuan, Li Xianguo, Yao Shuo

Summary: In this study, a solid superacid catalyst (SO42-/ZrO2) was used to upgrade bio-oil through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of algae. The catalyst was found to significantly adjust the composition of the bio-oil and improve its higher heating values (HHVs). The catalytic performance could be regulated by adjusting the acid amount and acid strength of SO42-/ZrO2. Additionally, the catalytic effects of the catalyst on major components of algae were explored, showing increased yields of bio-oil from proteins and lipids and the prevention of the Maillard reaction between polysaccharides and proteins.

A comparative study of fluid characteristics of W and Cu mineralization in the Shiweidong deposit, giant Dahutang ore field, South China: Evidence from LA-ICP-MS analysis of fluid inclusion

Kai -Han Zhang, Pei Ni, Wen-Sheng Li, Guo-Guang Wang, Jun-Yi Pan, Jian-Ming Cui, Ming-Sen Fan, Liang Han, Yan Gao, Gen-Wen He, Jun-Ying Ding

Summary: The Shiweidong W-Cu deposit in China is a quartz vein type W-Cu deposit located in the Dahutang W-Cu ore field. It is characterized by the presence of economically valuable W and Cu minerals, with resources of 0.3 Mt WO3 and 0.24 Mt Cu. The origin and characteristics of the W and Cu mineralizing fluids are still debated. In this study, fluid inclusions were analyzed to determine the homogenization temperature and salinity, and trace element compositions were used to clarify the fluid characteristics responsible for W and Cu mineralization. The results indicate that W and Cu mineralization in Shiweidong was introduced by distinct fluids.

Summary: The Jiajika lithium deposit in western China is associated with Late Mesozoic S-type granitic pegmatite. Fluid inclusions in quartz from the Jiajika deposit reveal the formation mechanism of lithium pegmatite and provide important clues for exploration of lithium pegmatites. The mineral zoning and composition of fluid inclusions indicate extensive fluid immiscibility and enrichment of alkaline and volatile elements in the deposit.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.
