Summary: This study aimed to investigate the situation of metabolically healthy overweight and obesity (MHOO) individuals in Asia and the factors associated with maintaining their metabolic health. The results showed that older age, longer follow-up time, higher BMI, and increased waist circumference were detrimental factors for metabolic health. However, sociodemographic factors and lifestyle factors did not have significant relationships with metabolic health among MHOO individuals.

Summary: The study examined the predictive value of baseline serum triglyceride (TG) levels for metabolic improvements after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Patients with baseline TG levels under 1.7 mmol/L had greater weight loss at six months follow-up, indicating that baseline TG levels may have predictive value for weight loss in the short-term. The study suggests a potential association between TG levels and weight loss outcomes post-LSG.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between overweight and obesity in young adulthood and incident diabetes later in life, finding that elevated BMI and waist circumference during young adulthood were independently associated with later-life incident diabetes. Insulin resistance was identified as a key mediator in this association, with other factors such as high-density lipoproteins and triglycerides playing a smaller role.

Summary: This study describes the metabolic, inflammatory and adipokine differences in overweight/obese children with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Results showed that children with MetS had higher levels of C-reactive protein, while children with normal body weight had lower levels of PAI-1 and leptin. The findings suggest that the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, obtainable from routine lab tests, can help identify MetS.

Summary: Using nationwide cohort data, this study explored the relationship between loss in body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC) and risk of dementia, and found that BMI loss increased the risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease in participants without obesity, but not in participants with obesity. WC loss was only associated with decreased Alzheimer's disease risk in participants with obesity.

Summary: In older adults at high cardiovascular risk, increasing levels of physical activity and adherence to a Mediterranean diet were associated with a lower inflammatory score, which was partly mediated by a reduction in body fat.

Summary: The study analyzed the association between fruit intake and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in a representative sample of Peruvians. Fruit intake per serving was found to be negatively related to general body adiposity and central fat distribution. However, the consumption of fruit in the form of juices was positively associated with a significant increase in BMI and WC.

Summary: Regular physical exercise, particularly jogging and yoga, is highly effective in reducing obesity indices such as body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-hip ratio. Jogging engages multiple body parts, while yoga targets the muscles around the hips and pelvis.

Summary: This study demonstrates that waist-corrected body mass index (wBMI), combining BMI and waist circumference measurements, is superior in predicting obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM). The study found a significant association between wBMI and the incidence of DM, with wBMI being a more reliable predictor compared to waist circumference, BMI, and waist-to-height ratio.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of short-term changes in general and central fatness on the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that both incident and persistent general and central fatness were associated with an increased risk of HCC. This emphasizes the importance of preventing and reversing body fatness to reduce the incidence of HCC.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the impact of pandemic confinement on body weight and finds that weight gain and weight loss were observed during the pandemic. Weight gain was more common among individuals who were already overweight or obese, while weight loss was observed in individuals with previous low weight. Factors such as changes in diet, physical activity, and sleep patterns were associated with these changes in body weight. Individuals with reduced income, particularly those with lower educational attainment, faced greater challenges in maintaining a stable weight.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among female migrants in the UAE, especially among Arabs and South Asians. Low physical activity, residing in the UAE for more than 5 years, and obesity are independently associated with vitamin D deficiency. Health professionals should be aware of this situation in this vulnerable population and provide intervention strategies focusing on sun exposure, physical activity, and supplementation.

Summary: Doxorubicin is a commonly used drug for cancer treatment, but its usage is limited due to serious side effects, including cardiotoxicity. This study found that Gal-3, a protein, is upregulated in conditions such as heart failure. The findings suggest that Gal-3 can affect the redox pathways and regulate cell survival and death in acute Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize Emiratis patients with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and compare the outcomes of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) versus multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) users. The results showed that CSII usage was associated with better glycemic control compared to MDI. However, there was no significant difference in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and severe hypoglycemia between the two groups. The study concludes that overall glycemic control among Emiratis with T1D is unsatisfactory and calls for more rigorous patient counseling and education.

Summary: Limited studies have focused on maternal early-life risk factors and the later development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study aimed to estimate GDM prevalence and examine the associations between maternal birthweight and parental history of diabetes with later GDM. The findings suggest that low birthweight and parental history of diabetes are significantly associated with later GDM.
