Objectives: To establish whether body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC) is a better predictor of cardio metabolic risk factors that are associated with increased visceral fat among obese women from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 333 obese subjects visiting community health centers in Al Ain city, UAE, were recruited between 2012 and 2015. After a written consent subjects had anthropometric, clinical and biochemical measurements. Fasting serum and plasma samples were collected for the measurement of markers of oxidative damage, antioxidants and inflammation. Outcome measures were compared between 4 equal BMI and WC quartiles. Results: We observed significantly higher blood pressure, c-reactive protein levels, IL6 levels, and protein carbonyls contents and lower beta-carotene levels in the fourth quartile than in the first quartile for both BMI and WC (p<0.01). Glutathione peroxidase and adiponectin both decreased and TNF-alpha increased with increasing WC quartiles but not BMI quartiles; however, the results were statistically significant only for TNF-alpha (p=0.032). Conclusion: Both elevated BMI and elevated WC are associated with increased cardio metabolic risk factors in obese Emirati women; however, WC is a stronger predictor than is BMI.

Systematic review of the effects of pandemic confinements on body weight and their determinants

Moien A. B. Khan, Preetha Menon, Romona Govender, Amal Mb Abu Samra, Kholoud K. Allaham, Javaid Nauman, Linda Ostlundh, Halla Mustafa, Jane E. M. Smith, Juma M. AlKaabi

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the impact of pandemic confinement on body weight and finds that weight gain and weight loss were observed during the pandemic. Weight gain was more common among individuals who were already overweight or obese, while weight loss was observed in individuals with previous low weight. Factors such as changes in diet, physical activity, and sleep patterns were associated with these changes in body weight. Individuals with reduced income, particularly those with lower educational attainment, faced greater challenges in maintaining a stable weight.

Waterpipe smoke-induced hypercoagulability and cardiac injury in mice: Influence of cessation of exposure

Abderrahim Nemmar, Suhail Al-Salam, Sumaya Beegam, Nur Elena Zaaba, Ozaz Elzaki, Javed Yasin, Badreldin H. Ali

Summary: Waterpipe tobacco smoking is harmful to the cardiovascular system, but smoking cessation can alleviate the associated toxicity. Waterpipe smoking causes hypertension, prothrombotic events, oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, and apoptosis in the heart, while quitting smoking can reduce these negative effects.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Its Associated Factors among Female Migrants in the United Arab Emirates

Fatme Al Anouti, Luai A. Ahmed, Azmat Riaz, William B. Grant, Nadir Shah, Raghib Ali, Juma Alkaabi, Syed M. Shah

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among female migrants in the UAE, especially among Arabs and South Asians. Low physical activity, residing in the UAE for more than 5 years, and obesity are independently associated with vitamin D deficiency. Health professionals should be aware of this situation in this vulnerable population and provide intervention strategies focusing on sun exposure, physical activity, and supplementation.

Early Doxorubicin Myocardial Injury: Inflammatory, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptotic Role of Galectin-3

Summary: Doxorubicin is a commonly used drug for cancer treatment, but its usage is limited due to serious side effects, including cardiotoxicity. This study found that Gal-3, a protein, is upregulated in conditions such as heart failure. The findings suggest that Gal-3 can affect the redox pathways and regulate cell survival and death in acute Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion is associated with a better glycemic control than multiple daily insulin injections without difference in diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia admissions among Emiratis with Type 1 diabetes

Raya Almazrouei, Charu Sharma, Bachar Afandi, Khaled M. Aldahmani, Elhadi H. Aburawi, Salem A. Beshyah, Gehad ElGhazali, Zain Al Yafei, Rami H. Al-Rifai, Juma Alkaabi

Summary: This study aimed to characterize Emiratis patients with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and compare the outcomes of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) versus multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) users. The results showed that CSII usage was associated with better glycemic control compared to MDI. However, there was no significant difference in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and severe hypoglycemia between the two groups. The study concludes that overall glycemic control among Emiratis with T1D is unsatisfactory and calls for more rigorous patient counseling and education.

Summary: Limited studies have focused on maternal early-life risk factors and the later development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study aimed to estimate GDM prevalence and examine the associations between maternal birthweight and parental history of diabetes with later GDM. The findings suggest that low birthweight and parental history of diabetes are significantly associated with later GDM.

Summary: The mechanism of anaphylactic shock and potential treatments were investigated using experiments on ovalbumin rats. The potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) was found to be effective in restoring blood pressure and improving survival rates, especially when used in combination with other drugs.

Catalpol Attenuates Oxidative Stress and Inflammation via Mechanisms Involving Sirtuin-1 Activation and NF-κB Inhibition in Experimentally-Induced Chronic Kidney Disease

Nur Elena Zaaba, Suhail Al-Salam, Sumaya Beegam, Ozaz Elzaki, Javed Yasin, Abderrahim Nemmar

Summary: Catalpol, an active compound in traditional Chinese medicine Rehmannia glutinosa, has shown significant protective effects against adenine-induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in mice. It reduces inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in the kidneys, and improves renal function. This study suggests that catalpol may be a potential nephroprotective agent for CKD.
