Summary: This study aimed to investigate the volatile profiles of M. sextelata under three dehydration methods: freeze, hot air, and natural air drying. It was found that comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry was the best choice to differentiate the volatile profiles. Freeze-dried samples had the most abundant volatile compounds, while hot air-drying promoted the production of compounds with roasted flavor and natural air-drying resulted in unpleasant acids releasing.

Summary: This study used sensory evaluation and gas chromatography-olfactory mass spectrometry to comprehensively identify and analyze the key aroma compounds in Dong Ding oolong tea. A total of 23 aroma-active compounds were identified, including three pyrazine compounds with roasted notes and seven floral- and fruit-smelling compounds. The content of specific compounds varied in different grades of tea samples. These findings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the flavor attributes of Dong Ding oolong tea.

Summary: Previous studies mainly used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze volatile compounds in soy sauce. This study employed both GC-MS and headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the volatile compounds in high-salt liquid-state fermentation soy sauce (HLFSS). The results revealed that there were 174 substances detected, with 87 detected by HS-GC-IMS and 127 by GC-MS. Aldehydes, ketones, esters, and alcohols were identified as the major compounds in HLFSS. Additionally, some compounds like ethyl pyruvate, (E)-2-pentenal, and diethyl propanedioate were newly detected using HS-GC-IMS.

Summary: With the use of a thermostatic fermenter, this study identified and analyzed the physicochemical factors and volatile metabolites of fermented broad beans. Through the application of HS-SPME-GC x GC-MS, the volatile compounds in fermented broad beans were detected, and metabolomics was used to explore the physicochemical characteristics and analyze possible metabolic mechanisms. A total of 184 different metabolites were detected, and they were annotated to various metabolic pathways of carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. This study provides references for improving the quality of tank-fermented broad beans and upgrading the Pixian broad bean paste industry.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) in biochars generated from different sources and pyrolysis temperatures. The results showed that the contents of PAHs and HMs in biochar were significantly influenced by the feedstock and pyrolysis temperature. Therefore, the effects of feedstock and pyrolysis temperature should be considered in the production and use of biochar.

Summary: The study found that maternal serum levels of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are associated with sex steroid hormone levels during pregnancy. Specifically, PFHxS is associated with increased testosterone levels in male fetuses, while PFNA and PFDA are associated with increased free testosterone levels in male fetuses. For female fetuses, PFHxS is associated with increased levels of estradiol and estriol. No associations were found for PFOS and PFOA.

Summary: This study collected 72 single-use medical products of four categories from a hospital in New York State in 2015 and analyzed their migration of 10 phthalates in an ethanol/water mixture. The results showed that the leached phthalate concentration ranged from 0.04 to 54,600 μg, with DEHP being the major phthalate found in 99% of the samples. DEHP was also found in notable concentrations in products labeled as DEHP-free. The study calculated the direct exposure to phthalates from medical devices and first aid supplies, as well as dermal intake from creams/lotions.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure of infants in South China to neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). The results showed that infants had detectable levels of NEOs in urine and blood samples, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. The concentrations of specific NEOs varied in different samples, with dinotefuran and imidacloprid being the most abundant in urine, blood, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. Older infants had higher NEO exposure than younger infants. Blood samples had higher concentrations of NEOs compared to urine samples, indicating that NEOs readily enter the bloodstream. Breast-fed infants had higher exposure levels than formula-fed infants. The study also found that external sources contributed to the majority of NEO exposure in infants.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic potency of PFECHS, an emerging PFAS, on zebrafish embryos and its potential effects in aquatic environments. The results showed that PFECHS caused fewer mortalities than PFOS in both acute and chronic exposures but resulted in a similar incidence of deformities. Exposure to PFECHS also increased the levels of specific genes at concentrations relevant to the environment. These findings provide insights into the safety of emerging PFAS alternatives in the aquatic environment and highlight the potential similarity of effects with legacy PFASs.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most common and deadliest cancer in women worldwide. Tamoxifen is widely prescribed for estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer and has both anticancer and chemo-preventive effects. This review focuses on the potential importance of vitamin E in breast cancer chemo-prevention and how it can affect the actions of tamoxifen. The findings suggest that individually designed nutritional interventions with vitamin E should be further considered for breast cancer patients.

This study found high concentrations of ultrashort- and short-chain PFAAs in indoor dust, water, and human samples, highlighting the need for further research on their potential adverse health effects.

Summary: The Arctic region is facing contamination from long-range pollution and local human activities. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are used as environmental indicators for emission, transport, and deposition processes. Research conducted in the Arctic surface snow in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard from October 2018 to May 2019 shows that long-range inputs of PAHs mainly occur in winter, while the most abundant analyte retene exhibits opposite seasonal trends.

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of biochar on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice. The results show that biochar reduces MeHg levels in paddy soils by decreasing bioavailable Hg and microbial Hg methylation. Additionally, biochar decreases the uptake and translocation of MeHg in rice plants, resulting in a reduction of MeHg accumulation in rice grains.

Summary: This study conducted a life-cycle assessment to examine the correlation between natural gas consumption and carbon emissions in different end uses in China. The results showed that both natural gas consumption and life-cycle carbon emissions have been increasing since 2017. Significant variations in NG life-cycle carbon emissions were found across different provinces and sectors, highlighting the need for targeted efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Summary: The synergistic effects of trace sulfadiazine and cast-iron corrosion scales on the formation of disinfection by-products in drinking water distribution systems were investigated. The presence of magnetite resulted in increased concentrations of DBPs due to the higher microbial activity and enhanced microbial extracellular electron transport pathway. The study highlights the importance of considering trace antibiotics pollution and corrosion scales in water sources for DBP control.

Summary: This study aims to explore the effects of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole on soil microflora and the potential mitigation mechanisms to bacterial communities. It was found that increasing the application of thiencarbazone-methyl center dot isoxaflutole resulted in increased stress on soil bacterial community structure and diversity. Increasing soil pH was recognized as a key factor in improving the diversity and structure of soil microflora. Supplemental use of nitrapyrin or modified attapulgite can increase soil pH and improve bacterial diversity.
