Summary: Research suggests that psychosocial functioning improves significantly in treatments for PTSD/AUD, especially with reductions in PTSD severity. However, these improvements do not necessarily lead to clinically meaningful improvements in patients' abilities to navigate important roles.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of group loving-kindness meditation and group cognitive processing therapy for treating PTSD among veterans. The results showed that loving-kindness meditation was noninferior to cognitive processing therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms, with modest improvements observed in both interventions. Additionally, loving-kindness meditation showed greater reduction in depressive symptoms compared to cognitive processing therapy over time.

Summary: This study examined the association between PTSD symptom clusters and AUD in U.S. veterans, finding that dysphoric arousal and externalizing behaviors were most strongly associated with AUD in the full sample, while externalizing behaviors, anxious arousal, and dysphoric arousal accounted for the majority of explained variance in veterans who screened positive for PTSD. These results highlight the importance of externalizing behaviors and arousal symptoms of PTSD as potential drivers of AUD in this population.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial examined the effectiveness of collaborative care treatment for adolescents with persistent postconcussive symptoms in improving symptoms, quality of life, anxiety, and depressive symptoms over 1 year compared to usual care. The findings suggest that collaborative care intervention led to fewer symptoms and better quality of life for adolescents over the course of 1 year. Additionally, delivering the intervention through telehealth broadened the reach of treatment.

Summary: This study found associations between pain, PTSD symptoms, and increased AUD symptomology among veterans. The relationship between pain and AUD appeared stronger in the context of low PTSD symptoms. Reexperiencing and negative cognitions and mood were identified as factors associated with increased AUD symptoms.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the clinical complexities of PTSD treatment among pregnant women with substance use histories. The results showed that these women experienced a high number of trauma events, and PTSD treatment should focus on multi-system involvement, parental trauma and substance use, the relevance of substance use to trauma context and posttraumatic cognitions, emotions, and behaviors, the impact of trauma on experiences of pregnancy, attachment, and child rearing, limited social networks and experiences of substance use discrimination. Therefore, PTSD treatment among pregnant women with substance use histories is highly important to maternal-child health.

Summary: This study found that veterans with alcohol use disorder (AUD) had higher rates of binge drinking at follow-up. For veterans with AUD, drinking days at admission and military sexual trauma (MST) were predictors of binge drinking. Among veterans without AUD, besides drinking days, PTSD symptom increases, being unmarried, race, and lower education level were associated with a higher likelihood of binge drinking.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of stepped care TF-CBT (SC-TF-CBT) and standard TF-CBT in treating children with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The results showed that SC-TF-CBT was non-inferior to TF-CBT in terms of improvements in PTSS, impairment, and severity. SC-TF-CBT provides an alternative and cost-effective treatment for some children and parents.

Summary: In female trauma-exposed participants with substance use disorders, younger age, opioid dependence, and higher PTSD reexperiencing symptoms were found to be associated with elevated severity of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This suggests the importance of screening for and addressing opioid use disorders and reexperiencing symptoms in trauma-exposed individuals with SUDs.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) between children with or without trauma exposure. The results showed that the trauma-exposed group had more negative FAA, indicating greater left lateralized FAA and avoidance-oriented motivation. In addition, alpha suppression was marginally greater in the trauma-exposed group. These findings suggest that early trauma exposure may be associated with avoidance of environmental stimuli, which could ultimately predict the development of psychopathology, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Summary: This study aimed to identify the optimal categorization methods for interventions targeting PTSD, SUD, or PTSD+SUD populations. Through literature search and expert survey, it was found that there are many overlapping categorizations. The most favorable categorization method appears to be trauma-focused and non-trauma focused. Revision of the language and terminology for treatment classification is necessary in this advancing field.

Summary: Injecting drugs alone is a potential risk factor for fatal opioid overdose among people who inject drugs. A study conducted in New York City found that, regardless of preference, the majority of participants chose to inject alone. Reasons for preferring to inject alone included the desire for privacy and avoiding judgment, while reasons for preferring to inject with others included having someone present in case of overdose and sharing drugs. Although injection preference was not associated with past non-fatal overdose, it may still carry a risk for future overdose.

Summary: A significant amount of research on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been conducted in high-income countries (HICs). However, the prevalence and impact of PTSD + AUD are higher in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This review aims to synthesize the existing research on the prevalence, impact, etiological models, and treatment of PTSD + AUD, focusing on studies conducted in HICs and discussing the limited research conducted in LMICs. The review also highlights the overall limitations in the field and suggests the need for rigorous research studies in LMICs to understand the etiological mechanisms and develop effective treatments.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the trajectories of PTSD symptoms during prolonged social disruption and stress. A longitudinal study tracking trauma-exposed individuals in the US found four distinct trajectories of PTSD symptoms: resilient, recurring, recovering, and chronic. Early pandemic experiences, including emotional and physical health problems and positive changes, were significant predictors of trajectory membership, particularly distinguishing the resilient trajectory from the others. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to support individuals at higher risk for ongoing distress during the pandemic.
