Manufacturing applications address business to business (B2B) with highly customised applications developed for specific requirements, offering highly specialised solution-oriented and service-based software components, systems, and digital tools that aim at a fast and accurate decision-making support system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of digital technologies for operations management using manufacturing or engineering apps (eApps), for product design and manufacturing processes. In particular, starting from the specific needs of two companies from mature European industries as automotive and food, this work depicts how this kind of solutions can support companies and improve their operations. In particular, related benefits and challenges faced for the full implementation of the developed tools are highlighted. Moreover a business model to exploit the manufacturing apps is also proposed. The business model proposed for the exploitation of the eApps supports the commercialisation of all the revenue streams offered by this rapidly growing sector taking into account the specific needs of the concerned stakeholders through a diversified value proposition.

Kinematics of aimed movements in ecological immersive virtual reality: a comparative study with real world

Sara Arlati, Noel Keijsers, Gabriele Paolini, Giancarlo Ferrigno, Marco Sacco

Summary: Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising technology for upper limb rehabilitation post-stroke. This study compared kinematics of reach-to-grasp and transport movements in VR and the real world, finding that while movements took longer in VR, joint angles and hand trajectories were comparable between the two environments. Further research is needed to determine the level of kinematic similarity required for functional gains in VR-based upper limb rehabilitation.

Extended reality technologies in small and medium-sized European industrial companies: level of awareness, diffusion and enablers of adoption

Henri Jalo, Henri Pirkkalainen, Osku Torro, Elena Pessot, Andrea Zangiacomi, Aleksei Tepljakov

Summary: Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), collectively referred to as extended reality (XR), have begun to diffuse in industry. This research investigates the levels of awareness, perceived limitations, and use of AR and VR, as well as the potential differences between these technologies in European industrial companies. The study also examines whether small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) differ from large companies in their adoption of XR. The findings suggest no statistical difference in perceptions and use levels between AR and VR. However, larger companies were found to be using XR more than SMEs. The research also identifies critical enabling factors for XR adoption, with specific focus on the SME context.

Unboxing the hyper-connected supply chain: a case study in the furniture industry

Elena Pessot, Andrea Zangiacomi, Rosanna Fornasiero

Summary: This study investigates the role of digital technologies, specifically enhanced interconnectivity, in supply chains and their management. Through a case study of a leading international company in the home furniture industry and its suppliers, the research explores the development of new and integrated practices and routines to achieve a hyper-connected supply chain. The study is based on the concept of absorptive capacity to understand the transformation brought by the assimilation of specific digital technologies. The findings offer practical insights and challenges for practitioners to integrate digital technologies at different levels in order to improve overall supply chain performance.

Proposal for an ICF-based methodology to foster the return to work of persons with disability

Luca Negri, Daniele Spoladore, Margherita Fossati, Sara Arlati, Mario Giuseppe Cocchi, Claudio Corbetta, Angelo Davalli, Marco Sacco

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a methodology for determining suitable jobs for individuals with disabilities following a job-related accident. The researchers combined the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) taxonomy with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to match individual resources with job requirements. They found that O*NET descriptors were linked to 92 unique ICF codes, and proposed a Criticality score to assess the suitability of selected jobs for persons with disabilities. This methodology can potentially support vocational rehabilitation specialists and occupational therapists in job placement for workers with disabilities.

A review of domain ontologies for disability representation

Daniele Spoladore, Marco Sacco, Alberto Trombetta

Summary: Healthcare 5.0 is a patient-centric approach that utilizes AI-based solutions to improve care and quality of life for all patients, including those with disabilities. However, the transparency of AI in healthcare is a concern, which can be addressed through Explainable AI (xAI) that provides human-interpretable applications. This study conducts a systematic literature review to identify which disabilities are represented in domain ontologies and examines the contexts in which these ontologies are developed. The findings shed light on the main disabilities represented in ontologies and offer insights for promoting semantic interoperability in AI-based healthcare systems.

Age-related differences in the kinematics of aimed movements in immersive virtual reality: a preliminary study

Sara Arlati, Noel Keijsers, Gabriele Paolini, Giancarlo Ferrigno, Marco Sacco

Summary: Immersive virtual reality (VR) is a promising technology for supporting rehabilitation and promoting the recovery of upper limb functions after stroke. This study compared the upper limb kinematics of young and older adults performing aimed movements in both real world and immersive VR conditions. The results showed that older adults moved slower, more curved, and reached lower peak velocity in VR compared to young adults. Arm ranges of motion seemed to be preserved, while thorax movements differed. Further research is needed to investigate the potential reasons behind these differences.

Summary: Children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders are more susceptible to obesity and eating disorders. Therapeutic programs, including nutritional education, are needed to prevent this. Serious games (SGs) offer a promising solution for improving treatment adherence in populations like children/adolescents with ADHD and ASD. This paper describes the design and development of a SG specifically focused on nutritional education for young individuals with ADHD or ASD. The SG consists of four mini-games within a narrative framework where players challenge opponents representing different educational topics. A pilot study will be conducted to evaluate the feasibility, engagement, and usability of the SG before a larger trial to assess its effectiveness in promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle.
