Olive Oils from Fruits Infected with Different Anthracnose Pathogens Show Sensory Defects Earlier Than Chemical Degradation

Fatima Peres, Pedro Talhinhas, Hugo Afonso, Helena Alegre, Helena Oliveira, Suzana Ferreira-Dias

Summary: Anthracnose is the most important disease affecting the value of olive oil. This study compared the effects of different olive anthracnose pathogens on the oil extracted from two popular Portuguese olive cultivars, finding that 'Galega Vulgar' was more susceptible to the disease. The quality of virgin olive oil was significantly impacted by the presence of Colletotrichum species in the fruits, with varying levels of acidity, fatty acid ethyl esters, and total phenols.

White Rot Fungi (Hymenochaetales) and Esca of Grapevine: Insights from Recent Microbiome Studies

Giovanni Del Frari, Helena Oliveira, Ricardo Boavida Ferreira

Summary: Esca is a major grapevine trunk disease that affects vineyards in the Northern hemisphere, with disputed etiology and epidemiology due to various internal and external symptoms and wood pathogens. While the role of pathogenic fungi in wood symptoms is well assessed, their impact on leaf symptoms remains uncertain. Recent studies focus on the microbiological aspect of esca, particularly the involvement of Hymenochaetales, in vineyards. The presence of Hymenochaetales and tracheomycotic fungi is believed to be a prerequisite for leaf symptoms, but further investigation is needed to understand their relationship with grapevines and other factors.

Biological Activity of Essential Oils of Four Juniper Species and Their Potential as Biopesticides

Ivanka Semerdjieva, Valtcho D. Zheljazkov, Tzenka Radoukova, Ivayla Dincheva, Neshka Piperkova, Vasilina Maneva, Tess Astatkie, Miroslava Kacaniova

Summary: This study assessed the biological activity of essential oils from four Juniperus species obtained through different distillation methods. The results show that plant sex can affect the composition and content of the oils, leading to differences in bioactivity. All tested oils demonstrated significant repellent and insecticidal activity against aphids.

Determination of biological properties of cherry virus Trakiya and its incidence on sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) in Bulgaria

Snezhana Milusheva, Delano James

Summary: The bi-cistronic virus cherry virus Trakiya, detected recently, is related to unclassified viruses with arthropod vectors/hosts. The virus was successfully transmitted between Prunus trees, and symptoms observed in the field were similar to experimental infection symptoms. The virus was also mechanically transmitted to various plant species, and survey analysis showed a high infection rate in cherry trees.
