Summary: Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory were used to predict the antioxidant potential of urolithins, bioactive gut microbiota metabolites of ellagitannins and ellagic acid. Different reaction mechanisms were considered in water and lipid-like environments to evaluate their ability to counter oxidative stress. The results showed that most urolithins exhibited higher scavenging activity against reactive oxygen species compared to other potent antioxidants, which was confirmed by experimental assays.

Summary: Chemical investigation of the ethanol extract of the branch and leaves of Illicium majus led to the isolation of four new phenylpropanoid glycosides and one new phenolic glycoside, along with 13 known compounds. Spectroscopic techniques were used to elucidate the structures of the new isolates, showing moderate radical scavenging activities for the most active compounds. Antibacterial activities of the isolates against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were also assessed, with no activity shown at the tested concentration.

Summary: The accumulation and elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wildlife and humans are largely due to interactions with proteins such as organic anion transporters, fatty acid binding proteins, and serum proteins like albumin. Changes in the environment and physiological factors can impact the distribution of PFAS-related proteins and subsequently affect PFAS levels. Understanding these relationships between biotic and abiotic environments, protein levels, and PFAS concentrations can improve study design and interpretation in wildlife research.

Summary: The functional properties of mulberry leaves were improved by enriching them with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The application of sodium glutamate immersion, cold shock, and anoxic treatment significantly increased the GABA content and the quantity of active phenolics. The particle size of the GABA-enriched mulberry leaf powders affected their physical properties, release of active compounds, and antioxidant and inhibition abilities. The addition of powders effectively delayed the staling of bread without altering its taste.

Summary: A study found that a Gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium named Lactobacillus acidipiscis HAU-FR7 isolated from traditional Chinese fermented soy product 'stinky tofu' can efficiently convert daidzin and genistin in soymilk to dihydrodaidzein and dihydrogenistein. In addition, the fermented soymilk with HAU-FR7 exhibited higher free radical scavenging capacity.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different fermentation times on the phenolic content and radical scavenging activity of Kinema, and determined the optimal fermentation time using one-factor response surface methodology. The numerical optimization suggested an optimal fermentation time of 29.6 hours, which resulted in significantly higher total phenolics and flavonoid contents and lower DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to traditionally fermented Kinema. Moreover, the optimized Kinema had significantly higher overall sensory scores. These results indicate that fermentation time affects the amount of bioactive constituents in Kinema.

Summary: Four new 5-hydroxymethylfurfural derivatives, named cornusfurans A-D (1-4), were obtained from wine-processed Corni fructus, along with three known ones (5-7). These compounds were unique components in Cornus officinalis processed with wine, and compounds 1-4 were constructed by a 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or 5-hydroxymethylfuroic acid and a small organic acid. The structures were determined through spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations of compounds 1-2 and 4 were confirmed by comparing experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. Bioassay results showed that compounds 1-2 exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activity and protective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative stress damage.

Summary: Ilex rotunda, a plant used in traditional medicine, was investigated for its antioxidant activity. The twig extract showed the highest antioxidant capacity, and the n-butanol fraction exhibited the most significant antioxidant effect. Eight marker compounds were isolated and their structures were determined. Compound 7, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, demonstrated potent antioxidant activity and penetration across the blood-brain barrier, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic candidate for central nervous system diseases.

Summary: Ornamental geophytes face challenges with slow development and ineffective propagation methods, leading to the development of micropropagation techniques to improve multiplication rate and shorten regeneration periods. Dormancy is a key limitation in vitro multiplication, as bulbs require overcoming dormancy for sprouting. Understanding dormancy processes can help accelerate breeding and achieve economic profitability in horticulture. This review specifically focuses on recent findings in bulb dormancy initiation and release in fritillaries, emphasizing the effects of plant growth regulators and low-temperature pretreatment on dormancy release and antioxidative enzyme activity induction in vitro.

Summary: The hairy root clones of Gentiana dinarica cultivated in TIS RITA(R) and BCB with 1/2 MS medium and 4% sucrose showed higher dry matter content and xanthones production compared to those in EF. Among the clones, clone cl-B displayed superior growth parameters in BCB and TIS RITA(R), with the highest production of nor-1-O-prim and norswertianin. The optimized conditions in highly aerated TIS RITA(R) and BCB systems contribute to the development of bioreactor technology for large scale commercial production of xanthones nor-1-O-prim and norswertianin.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of various auxin-cytokinin combinations on different morphogenetic pathways in bulb scale culture of Fritillaria meleagris. Low concentrations of plant growth regulators were found to be effective for shoot multiplication, with up to 5.5 shoots per explant. The combination of 2,4-D and low BAP concentration produced the highest number of bulbs, while PGR-free medium was effective in somatic embryo formation.
