The in vivo antifungal activity of crude extracts of Dipsacus asper roots was evaluated against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum coccodes, Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei, Magnaporthe grisea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondite and Rhizoctonia solani using a whole-plant assay method. Ethyl acetate and acetone extracts, at 1000 mu g/mL, suppressed the development of tomato gray mold (TGM) and tomato late blight (TLB) by 90%. Through bioassay-guided isolation, five antifungal substances were isolated from the D. asper roots and identified as beta-sitosterol (1), campesterol (2), stigmasterol (3), cauloside A (4) and a novel dipsacus saponin, named colchiside (3-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-23-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-28-O-beta-D-(6-O-acetyl)-glucopyranosyl hederagenin) (5). Of those, cauloside A (4) displayed the greatest antifungal efficacy against rice blast, TGM and TLB. Colchiside (5) moderately suppressed the development of TLB, but exhibited little effect against the other diseases. The synergistic effects of the isolated compounds against TLB were also assessed. Synergistic and additive interactions were observed between several of the sterol compounds. This study indicated that the crude extracts of, and bioactive substances from, the roots of D. asper suppress TGM and TLB. In addition, cauloside A (4) and colchiside (5) could be used as antifungal lead compounds. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Antibacterial effect of copper nanoparticles produced in a Shewanella-supported non-external circuit bioelectrical system on bacterial plant pathogens

Huong Thu Luong, Canh Xuan Nguyen, Thuong Thuong Lam, Thi-Hanh Nguyen, Quang-Le Dang, Ji-Hoon Lee, Hor-Gil Hur, Hoa Thi Nguyen, Cuong Tu Ho

Summary: This study investigated the use of copper nanoparticles to inhibit plant pathogens, Ralstonia solanacearum and Xanthomonas axonopodis. The copper nanoparticles were synthesized in a bioelectrochemical system to avoid the inhibiting effect of copper ions on bacterial cells. The results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles damaged R. solanacearum cells but did not harm X. axonopodis cells.

Chemical constituents of Desmodium triflorum and their antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic fungi

Hieu Nguyen-Ngoc, Trang Nguyen-Thi-Thu, Kieu-Anh Vo-Thi, Tung Nguyen-Huu, Lam Tran-Dai, Hoang Dinh Vu, Duc Trong Nghiem, Quang Le Dang

Summary: In the process of finding new antifungal compounds against plant pathogens, the methanol extract of Desmodium triflorum was investigated. Seven compounds were isolated and identified, of which six belong to flavone C-glycosides. Three major compounds showed moderate antifungal activity against three plant pathogens. In addition, the nanoemulsion of the extract displayed enhanced inhibition against the pathogens. The presence of specific compounds in the extract may contribute to its antifungal activity. These findings validate the potential of D. triflorum and its flavonoids as natural fungicides.

In vitro and in vivo antimicrobial activities of extracts and constituents derived from Desmodium styracifolium (Osb.) Merr. against various phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria

Quang Le Dang, Hoai Thu Thi Do, Gyung Ja Choi, Minh Van Nguyen, Hoang Dinh Vu, Gia Vu Pham, Cuong Tu Ho, Xuan Canh Nguyen, Van Hanh Vu, Thang Dinh Tran, Duc Trong Nghiem, Thi Thu Trang Nguyen

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial activities of Desmodium styracifolium and its metabolites against phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. The crude extract of D. styracifolium showed potent suppression against fungal plant diseases, while n-hexane and dichloromethane-soluble extracts effectively controlled rice blast and tomato late blight. Sixteen compounds were isolated and identified, including the first report of isoflavanones and a pyrrole lactone alkaloid in D. styracifolium. Compound 9, a new isoflavone, displayed potent antifungal and antibacterial activities. Isoflavanones and isoflavones were determined as the bioactive constituents with wide-spectrum antifungal activity. The findings suggest that D. styracifolium compounds could be developed as inhibitors against phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria.
