Summary: This study assessed the prevalence and geographic variation of obesity-related hypertension among adults aged 45 years or older in China. The results showed a high prevalence of obesity-related hypertension, with 22.7% of the population affected, equivalent to 120 million people. The prevalence of obesity-related hypertension decreased from north to south and from east to west. Female gender, urban residence, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia were positively correlated with obesity-related hypertension.

Summary: In large US cities, median household income is inversely correlated with obesity prevalence in White and Black populations, suggesting that increasing socioeconomic status may decrease obesity rates. However, meeting physical activity guidelines does not necessarily affect obesity prevalence.

Summary: Obesity is strongly associated with hypertension, but the predictive ability of obesity cut-offs for hypertension screening in adolescents is controversial. This study found that using BMI percentile and WHtR as obesity cut-offs performed poorly in diagnosing hypertension in a South African adolescent population.

Summary: This study examined the association between body mass index (BMI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among the largest three racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018, the study found that BMI was associated with higher odds of prediabetes/T2DM for Latine and White individuals, but the association was weaker for Black individuals.

Summary: This review focuses on recent advances in pharmacotherapy for pediatric obesity, including medications for rare monogenic forms of obesity. In addition to approved medications for weight reduction in children, off-label medications also have a broad safety margin. The review aims to provide guidance for clinicians and encourage further research into pharmacotherapy and other interventions for pediatric obesity.

Summary: The relationship between obesity, arterial hypertension, and excessive salt intake has long been known, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. Recent studies indicate that obese children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the development of salt-sensitive arterial hypertension. Specific dietary recommendations should be developed for overweight and obese patients.

Summary: This study examined the associations between tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) and body mass index (BMI) with high blood pressure (HBP) among Lithuanian children and adolescents aged 7-18 years. The findings showed that both BMI and TMI were significantly associated with HBP, but BMI was a better predictor for HBP than TMI.

Summary: Reducing salt and increasing potassium intake are recommended lifestyle modifications for patients with hypertension. However, few studies have evaluated salt intake with these methods in hypertensive outpatients. In this study, urinary salt excretion value and total score on the salt check-sheet were associated with inadequate blood pressure control in hypertensive outpatients.

Summary: Obesity is the major obstacle to improving cardiovascular health, involving changes in energy balance control that may lead to hypertension. Drug development targeting metabolism often leads to hypertension, but new research suggests different subtypes of AGRP neurons may have varying effects on feeding, metabolism, or blood pressure control.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the frequency of hemodynamic instability in pediatric continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) and its association with patient outcomes. The study found that one in four filter connections during CKRT resulted in hypotension and one in six resulted in tachycardia. Higher severity of illness at the initiation of CKRT was independently associated with hypotension.

Summary: This study compared the hemodynamic stability after closing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in extremely premature infants using surgical ligation (SL) or cardiac catheter-based closure (CCC). The SL group had smaller and less mature infants with higher respiratory support. However, there was no significant difference in postoperative hemodynamic decompensation between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a predictive model for masked hypertension and determine the optimal thresholds for screening. The results showed that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) could be selectively used in individuals with clinic systolic blood pressure (BP) <20th percentile and diastolic BP <80th percentile. However, even in this subgroup, the prevalence of masked hypertension was still relatively high, suggesting that routine ABPM remains recommended.

Summary: Hypertension in children is associated with an increased risk of sustained hypertension and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Transitioning the care of adolescents and young adults with hypertension is an important unmet healthcare need that can significantly mitigate cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood. However, there is a lack of published literature on the transition process in this population, leading to considerable gaps in the field.
