Summary: A population-based analysis in South Korea found a significantly increased risk of IBD among first-degree relatives of affected individuals, with the highest risk observed among siblings and for Crohn's disease. These findings may facilitate earlier diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic intervention in family members of individuals with IBD. Further dedicated studies are needed to assess the contributions of shared early-in-life environmental exposures and genetic factors.

Summary: In recent years, the incidence of infectious spondylodiscitis (IS) has been increasing in South Korea, mainly due to the aging population, chronic diseases, and various risk factors. This population-based cohort study investigated the incidence and treatment trends of IS from 2010 to 2019. The results showed a significant increase in the incidence rate of IS, with a higher proportion of elderly patients. Conservative treatment has increased, while surgical treatment has decreased. The overall healthcare costs have also significantly increased, resulting in a higher socioeconomic burden.

Summary: Long-term exposure to PM10 was associated with newly diagnosed osteoporosis in Korean adults aged 40 years and older, especially in females, individuals under 65 years old, and residents in low urbanization areas. However, exposure to NO2, CO, SO2, or PM2.5 did not lead to an increase in osteoporosis.

Summary: Several studies have shown that patients with PBC have an increased risk of developing HCC. Risk factors for HCC in PBC include advanced age, male sex, comorbidities, and advanced liver fibrosis. The role of treatment response as a risk factor for HCC development in PBC patients should be further investigated. HCC in PBC has a poor prognosis compared to other chronic liver diseases with HCC, and liver transplantation offers the highest survival rate among available therapies.

Summary: This study evaluated the involvement of bile duct and disease progression in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and found that bile duct injury does not follow the same course as fibrosis, and certain indicators are associated with ductopenia progression.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and outcomes of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in South Korea between 2009 and 2019. The results showed a significant increase in the incidence and prevalence of PBC during this period. Male sex and low adherence to UDCA treatment were associated with worse prognosis for PBC.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, incidence, and comorbidities associated with SBMA in the South Korean population. The mean incidence rate of SBMA was 0.36/100,000 males, and the prevalence rate was approximately 0.46/100,000 males. The most common comorbidities identified were gastritis and duodenitis, gastroesophageal reflux, hyperlipidemia, and liver disorders. Gastric cancer was also found to be a common type of cancer in SBMA patients in South Korea.

Summary: The study found that emergency departments are increasingly used as the entry point for hospital admission, with patients admitted to the intensive care unit predominantly having cardiovascular system diseases, and patients admitted to the general ward mainly having injuries and toxicology, digestive system, and respiratory system diseases. Cardiovascular emergencies were the main cause of death for ICU patients, while oncologic complications were the main cause of death for general ward patients.

Summary: This population-based study utilized data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database to investigate the prevalence and incidence of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in South Korea. The results showed that the prevalence and incidence rates of CIDP in South Korea were similar to previous studies. Common comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes should be closely monitored to prevent poor prognosis and socioeconomic burden in patients with CIDP.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiological and clinical characteristics, treatment uptake, and outcomes of HCV infection among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Korea. The results showed that the PWID group consisted of younger patients with a higher proportion of males and a higher treatment uptake rate. The distribution of PWID varied by region, and there were differences in genotype distribution between the PWID and non-PWID groups.
