Plasmonic resonators can provide large local electric fields when the gap between metal components is filled with an ordinary dielectric. We consider a new concept consisting of a hybrid nanoantenna obtained by introducing a resonant, plasmonic nanoparticle strategically placed inside the gap of an aptly sized metallic antenna. The system exhibits two nested, nearly overlapping plasmonic resonances whose signature is a large field enhancement at the surface and within the bulk of the plasmonic nanoparticle that leads to unusually strong, linear and nonlinear light-matter coupling. Nonlinear microscopy of lead iodide nanosheets

Jingshi Yan, Qingdong Ou, Maria Antonietta Vincenti, Costantino De Angelis, Qiaoliang Bao, Dragomir N. Neshev

Summary: In this study, the non-linear optical properties of PbI2 nanosheets were investigated using nonlinear microscopy. The researchers found that the nonlinearity enhancement of the nanosheets depends on excitonic resonances, crystalline orientation, thickness, and the influence of the substrate. These findings open up new opportunities for the use of PbI2 nanosheets as nonlinear and quantum light sources.

Stacked chalcogenide metasurfaces for third harmonic generation in the UV range

M. A. Vincenti, J. Gao, D. de Ceglia, J. A. Frantz, M. Scalora, N. M. Litchinitser

Summary: By appropriately designing a chalcogenide metasurface, we have demonstrated enhanced harmonic generation in the UV range, a regime that was previously believed to be inaccessible due to absorption. This enhancement is achieved through a combination of photonic band structure, phase-locking, nonlinear dispersion, and improved field localization, resulting in a two orders of magnitude improvement in third harmonic conversion efficiency compared to the single layer counterpart, despite tuning the harmonic signal deep in the absorption range at 285 nm.

Design of vanadium-dioxide-based resonant structures for tunable optical response

Muhammad Fayyaz Kashif, Tiziana Stomeo, Maria Antonietta Vincenti, Massimo De Vittorio, Michael Scalora, Antonella D'Orazio, Domenico de Ceglia, Marco Grande

Summary: This study investigates the optical properties of flat unpatterned resonant structures and gratings coated with a thin film of vanadium dioxide. The results show that the reflectance spectra of the resonant structures can be modulated in both broadband and narrowband ranges by undergoing an insulator-to-metal phase transition in vanadium dioxide. Resonant devices with tunable spectral response have potential applications in various fields.

All-optical tunable wavelength conversion in opaque nonlinear nanostructures

Jiannan Gao, Maria Antonietta Vincenti, Jesse Frantz, Anthony Clabeau, Xingdu Qiao, Liang Feng, Michael Scalora, Natalia M. Litchinitser

Summary: This study demonstrates a simple, subwavelength-thick nanostructure that can efficiently convert wavelengths from infrared to ultraviolet in femtosecond timescale. The nanostructure, made of chalcogenide glass, takes advantage of its strong Kerr nonlinearity and high linear refractive index to achieve strong field enhancement at Mie resonances. The output wavelength can be tunable by adjusting input power and delay, without realignment of the system.

Summary: We investigate transient, photo-thermally induced meta-surface effects in a planar thin-film multilayer based on a phase-transition material. Illumination with obliquely incident, phase-coherent pulsed pumps induces a reversible temperature pattern in the phase-transition layer, leading to a transient Fano-like spectral feature. The study suggests new opportunities for dynamic control of the quality factor in photonic resonances and for light modulation and switching.

Extraordinary second harmonic generation modulated by divergent strain field in pressurized monolayer domes

Boqing Liu, Tanju Yildirim, Elena Blundo, Domenico de Ceglia, Ahmed Raza Khan, Zongyou Yin, Hieu T. Nguyen, Giorgio Pettinari, Marco Felici, Antonio Polimeni, Yuerui Lu

Summary: In this study, large pressurized monolayer TMD domes were fabricated using proton irradiation, and their SHG performance was comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the intensity of SHG was effectively enhanced by around two orders of magnitude at room temperature. This giant enhancement was attributed to the distinct separation distance induced by capped pressurized gas and the hemi-spherical morphology, which enabled constructive optical interference. Moreover, the unique divergent strain field in TMD domes promoted the first experimental study on the anisotropic nonlinear optical behavior based on biaxial strain conditions.

Three orders of magnitude enhancement of second and third harmonic generation in the visible and ultraviolet ranges from plasmonic gold nanogratings

S. Mukhopadhyay, L. Rodriguez-Sune, C. Cojocaru, M. A. Vincenti, K. Hallman, G. Leo, M. Belchovski, D. de Ceglia, M. Scalora, J. Trull

Summary: We report experimental observations and numerical simulations of second and third harmonic generation from a gold nanograting, which exhibits a plasmonic resonance in the near infrared. The resonance is tunable, with a spectral position that depends on the angle of incidence. The enhancement of nonlinear optical processes produced by the field localization in the nanograting when compared with a flat gold mirror manifests itself dramatically from the ultraviolet to the visible range, suggesting potential applications in nonlinear optics of metals at the nanoscale.

Luca Fagiani, Luca Bolzonello, Johann Osmond, Domenico de Ceglia, Niek van Hulst, Monica Bollani, Maria Antonietta Vincenti

Summary: This study presents a silicon-based nanostructure that can control light polarization with high precision and compact size. By leveraging the properties of quasi-bound states in the continuum, the proposed meta-polarizer converts arbitrarily polarized incoming light into linearly polarized light without the use of local phase tuning mechanisms. The experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness in compensating unwanted birefringence in optical fibers and controlling polarization in complex media environments.

C. Baratto, M. Gandolfi, A. Tognazzi, P. Franceschini, G. Ambrosio, B. Li, R. Camacho Morales, D. de Ceglia, A. C. Cino, D. N. Neshev, C. De Angelis

Summary: An infrared optical limiting sensor has been developed for laser protection. The sensor uses metallic and dielectric photonic resonators with phase-change materials, optimized deposition by RF magnetron sputtering, and silver placement between VO2 and the substrate to improve performance. The optimum thickness for VO2 and silver films has been calculated, and characterization and resistance measurements have been performed. The sensor exhibits a transmittance drop of 70% when exposed to a laser pulse excitation.

Wavefront Control of Millimeter Waves With a VO2-Based Reconfigurable Meta-Reflectarray

Mohammad Ali Shameli, Antonio-D Capobianco, Luca Schenato, Marco Santagiustina, Domenico De Ceglia

Summary: In this paper, a novel reconfigurable metasurface architecture is proposed and evaluated for wavefront control in millimeter-wave wireless systems. The metasurface, made of engineered silicon bricks covered with a thin film of vanadium dioxide, demonstrates anomalous reflection with 93% efficiency and 15% relative bandwidth at 60 GHz. By applying a thermal stimulus, the metasurface undergoes a phase transition in vanadium dioxide, leading to specular reflection. This device allows dynamic control of millimeter waves, making it suitable for various applications in 5G and 6G systems.

A Reflective Metalens With Tunable Focal Length for Millimeter Waves

Mohammad Ali Shameli, Mirko Magarotto, Antonio-D Capobianco, Luca Schenato, Marco Santagiustina, Domenico De Ceglia

Summary: A novel architecture of reconfigurable, flat metalens with electrically tunable focal length is proposed for wireless communication systems operating at millimeter wave frequencies. The metalens is made of reflective silicon bricks distributed on a grounded multilayer with phase-transition material films, allowing for different focal lengths. Numerical investigation shows that the metalens can reversibly tune focal length at specific distances and remains tunable within a certain frequency range. This has significant importance for dynamically controlling the focal point of millimeter waves in wireless communications.
