Summary: This study found a significant association between 1-arachidonoyl-GPA (20:4) and asthma, with stronger effects observed in women and individuals of Cuban and Puerto Rican backgrounds. Mutations in the FAD S2 gene affected the levels of 1-arachidonoyl-GPA (20:4), and genetically regulated high levels of 1-arachidonoyl-GPA (20:4) were associated with increased odds of asthma.

Summary: This study examines the associations between hearing impairment, cardiovascular disease risk, and cognitive function in the Hispanic/Latino population. The results suggest that hearing impairment is associated with poorer cognitive performance, and cardiovascular disease risk does not attenuate these relationships. Among individuals with hearing impairment, high glucose levels exacerbate poor performance on learning and memory tasks.

Summary: This study examined the replication and generalization of metabolites associated with global cognitive function across multiple race/ethnicities and explored the contribution of diet to these associations. The results consistently revealed six metabolites, including sugar-related ones, that were associated with lower global cognitive function. Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses provided weak evidence for a potential causal effect of ribitol on cognitive function and bidirectional effects between cognitive performance and diet.

Summary: Most TWASs conducted so far have focused on European ancestry and lacked diversity. To address this limitation, researchers aggregated GWAS summary statistics, whole-genome sequences, and eQTL data from diverse ancestries. They developed a new approach called TESLA, which integrates eQTL datasets with multi-ancestry GWAS, improving power and identifying more genes associated with tobacco use phenotypes compared to alternative TWAS methods. The study also suggests potential drug repurposing options for treating nicotine addiction.

Summary: Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a common disease that increases the risk of cardiometabolic, cardiovascular, and cognitive diseases. However, the impact of SDB on the molecular environment is still poorly understood. This study investigates the association between SDB measures and gene expression using RNA-seq in multiple blood tissues. The findings suggest differential gene expression by blood cell type and provide potential markers for intervention development to alleviate the effects of SDB on the human molecular environment.

Summary: Complex diseases result from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors and include common noncommunicable diseases. Precision medicine, using genomic and molecular data, has been successful for certain diseases but faces challenges due to heterogeneity and high number of risk factors in complex diseases. Subclassifying patients based on molecular or phenotypic data holds promise for improving diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Summary: This study identifies new genetic variants associated with resting heart rate (RHR) and demonstrates that higher genetically predicted RHR is associated with a decreased risk of atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke. Genome-wide analysis reveals multiple genetic variants in cardiomyocyte-related genes and provides insights into their electrocardiogram (ECG) signature. Mendelian randomization analyses indicate that higher genetically predicted RHR increases the risk of dilated cardiomyopathy, but reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation, ischemic stroke, and cardio-embolic stroke.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of obesity, age, sex, and race/ethnicity on the severity of sleep apnea. The study finds that obesity, male sex, older age, and Chinese ancestry are associated with increased severity of sleep apnea. Different subgroups exhibit different underlying pathophysiological pathways, providing multiple targets for intervention.

Summary: This study examined the awareness, perceived usefulness, and utilization of genetic testing among Hispanic and Latino individuals. The results showed that awareness and use of genetic testing varied based on education and income, while perceptions about its usefulness were generally high but actual testing experiences were rare. The findings suggest a need for increased outreach and education about the capabilities of genetic testing and precision medicine in the Hispanic and Latino population.
