The ecological resilience of abandoned pastures has important implications for the potential of passive restoration in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, especially in the face of the ambitious restoration targets for this biodiversity hotspot. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the influence of past land-use on natural regeneration in two secondary forests that established on abandoned pastures with different land use histories (Abandoned + Fire-15 years since the last fire event and Abandoned-36 years ago) in a lowland Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Both secondary forests exhibit low resilience for the three analyzed attributes: vegetation structure, richness, and species composition. Secondary forests affected by fire have the lowest values for species richness, aboveground biomass and leaf area index compared to old-growth forests. Secondary forests were dominated by Moquiniastrum polymorphum-Asteraceae, which was absent from the old-growth forests. Fire resistance, capacity to establish in nutrient-poor soils and efficient seed dispersal in human-modified landscapes are important attributes that may explain the dominance of this species. We demonstrate that even in sites considered appropriate for passive restoration a priori (e.g. located in a protected area, 36 years since abandonment and close to old-growth forests), secondary forests exhibited low aboveground biomass and communities were dominated by few species. Therefore, our results highlight the effects of past land-use on natural regeneration and suggest the necessity to use interventions such as enrichment plantings, nucleation techniques and assisted natural regeneration in order to accelerate forest restoration.

Cambium phenology and dendrochronology of the endangered tropical tree Ocotea catharinensis Mez

Warlen Silva da Costa, Maura Da Cunha, Tahysa Mota Macedo, Mariana de Andrade Iguatemy, Alexandre Quinet, Pablo Jose Francisco Pena Rodrigues, Claudia Franca Barros

Summary: This study investigated the growth and age characteristics of Ocotea catharinensis in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, revealing distinct annually-formed tree-rings and a positive correlation between tree-ring width chronology and March precipitation. The research also found that trees with similar diameters at breast height may differ by up to 50 years in age.

Germination, viability and dormancy of 47 species from threatened tropical montane grassland in southeast Brazil: Implications for ex situ conservation

L. G. de Andrade, A. Sanchez-Tapia, A. C. S. de Andrade

Summary: To mitigate anthropogenic impacts on plant diversity in tropical montane grasslands, it will be essential to develop ex situ conservation strategies to preserve wild species. The lack of basic research on the seed storage behaviour of grassland species may, however, limit their use for reintroduction and restoration projects. Despite a variety of dormancy responses among the different species, the low RH storage conditions tested released dormancy for most species during 12- and 30-month storage times.

Summary: This study assessed the variability of functional traits of trees in edge and interior habitats of a forest remnant. The results showed that wood density and tree height were significantly lower in the edges compared to the interior. The study also found significant relationships between wood density and habitats, as well as diameter and distance to the edge.

Forever young: arrested succession in communities subjected to recurrent fires in a lowland tropical forest

Stella Mata, Joao Marcelo Alvarenga Braga, Pamela Moser, Richieri Antonio Sartori, Andrea Sanchez-Tapia, Jeronimo Boelsums Barreto Sansevero

Summary: Fire in tropical forests can hinder natural regeneration and lead to the establishment of an alternative stable state. This study investigated the impact of fire frequency and post-fire regeneration time on vegetation structure, diversity, and functional composition in secondary forests over a 12-year period. The results showed that there was no significant difference in community structure and diversity between sites subjected to fire and those that were not, indicating an arrested succession pattern and the establishment of an alternative stable state.

Functional trajectory for the assessment of ecological restoration success

Summary: Ecological restoration aims to recover degraded ecosystems to their pre-degradation state. The functional composition of the initial community plays a crucial role in determining the trajectory of the ecosystem over time. Our study found that the initial functional composition influenced the success of restoration efforts, with communities planted using higher functional diversity showing greater resemblance to the reference ecosystem after 20 years. The functional trajectories of the communities were primarily driven by the mortality of planted individuals rather than the colonization of new species.

Are liana communities in linear canopy openings subject to edge effects?

Beatriz Castro Miranda, Jeronimo Boelsums Barreto Sansevero, Thiago de Azevedo Amorim, Pablo Jose Francisco Pena Rodrigues, Marcelo Trindade Nascimento, Joao Marcelo Alvarenga Braga

Summary: Studies have found that intense fragmentation and edge effects caused a significant increase in liana abundance in tropical forests. This study evaluated whether liana communities adjacent to linear canopy openings experience similar edge effects in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The results showed that the edge and interior lianas had similar community dynamics, suggesting that linear openings may result in a softer edge effect or attenuate over time. Additionally, the infestation of larger trees by lianas indicates the importance of tree structure in shaping liana communities.

Two new species of Eugenia (Myrtaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Thiago Fernandes, Davi Nepomuceno da Silva Machado, Marcelo da Costa Souza, Mariana Bunger, Ana Angelica Monteiro de Barros, Pablo Viany Prieto, Joao Marcelo Alvarenga Braga

Summary: This study describes two new species of Eugenia found in the Atlantic Forest near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Based on literature survey, examination of herbarium specimens and field work, the new taxa Eugenia delicata and E. superba are proposed. E. delicata belongs to E. sect. Eugenia, similar to E. xanthoxyloides but with distinct characteristics such as narrow-elliptic cataphylls, distichous leaf arrangement, easily cracking leaves, widely-ovate bracteoles, and ellipsoid mature fruits. E. superba belongs to E. sect. Phyllocalyx, resembling E. magnibracteolata but with differences in trunk bark, leaf blades, pedicels and flowers, and mature fruits. Both species are classified as endangered and critically endangered, respectively, and their cultivation for ex-situ conservation is encouraged.

Concordance between regenerating plants, ants and other arthropods in the Atlantic Forest: the importance of tree identity in the canopy

Mariana S. Casimiro, R. A. E. Filardi, J. B. B. Sansevero, J. M. Santangelo, R. M. Feitosa, Jarbas M. Queiroz

Summary: This study evaluated the agreement in species richness and composition of regenerating plants, ants, and other arthropods under the canopy of different tree species in a restoration area in the Atlantic Forest. It found that environmental variables, often associated with the tree's identity, play a significant role in determining the relationship between ants, arthropods, and regenerating plants. Ants were found to be weak indicators of plant biodiversity and other arthropods, with this relationship not guided by environmental or spatial variables.
